Twin Houses of merchant Budylin in Arzamas

What to Expect and Is It Worth Visiting

Two ancient twin houses are located near Cathedral Square and are an architectural landmark and heritage monument. Two of these completely identical houses were built by merchant Ivan Vasilyevich Podsosov in the early XIX century for his sons, and their current name of the name "merchant Budylin" was presumably named after their last owner. What is remarkable is that although the houses look like stone, they are actually built of wood, only the facade imitates stone. Inside the buildings have a completely different layout, created at the request of the sons, and outside they were made exactly the same by the decision of the father so that there would be no strife between the sons.

Unfortunately, today this architectural monument is in a deplorable state (like almost everything in Arzamas), so you can see the houses only from the outside during a walk around the Cathedral Square. On the site between the houses there is a city Fair of Arzamas, where food, clothing, essential goods are sold.
