Vacation in Mezmay - how to get there, what to see, where to stay

General information

Mezmay (Mezmai) is a village in the mountainous part of the Krasnodar Territory in the Absheron district, 170 kilometers from Krasnodar, located at an altitude of 717 meters above sea level (Mezmay on the map). Just a couple of kilometers away are two more tiny settlements the village of Temnoleskaya and the Russian farm, and 4 kilometers in a straight line and 20 kilometers by road there is another resort - Guamka farm.

The settlement was formed in the middle of the XVIII century as a place of residence and work of loggers and gold miners, and for a long time it was one of the most inaccessible places in these parts, where only bad dirt roads led through the mountains. In the 30s of the last century, the village was connected to the outside world by a narrow-gauge railway along the gorge along the Kurdzhips River for the export of timber. Now this railway has become a landmark "Guam Gorge and tourist train", thanks to which Mezmay began to develop as a tourist destination. Today there is a good asphalt road leading here, and it has finally become accessible to all interested tourists.

Vacation in Mezmay

Most tourists know Mezmay as the place where the Eagle Regiment attraction is located. However, it is also an independent resort for outdoor recreation surrounded by beautiful mountains and many other interesting attractions. It is very popular as a weekend vacation destination for residents of the Krasnodar Territory and neighboring regions, but tourists who come to the coast for a beach holiday also visit it with pleasure. Rarely anyone remains disappointed with this picturesque place.

It is most convenient to come here by private car and spend a couple of days here, and ideally you should combine a trip to Mezmay and Guamka, for which it is better to allocate 4 full days. If you are not traveling by car, you can buy excursions for one or two days at the popular beach resorts of the Krasnodar Territory, including transport, guide support, accommodation (in the case of multi-day excursions) and visits to the most popular attractions. Usually the excursions include a train ride through the Guam Gorge and a hike to the Eagle Shelf. You can also come to Mezmay by public transport, but buses run only three times a week.

In addition to hiking along tourist routes to attractions in Mezmay, you can go to a sauna or sauna, visit hot natural springs, ride horses, rent an ATV, go fishing, swim on the local beach in the center of the village on the Mezmay River or just relax and barbecue in nature.

Infrastructure in Mezmay

In terms of infrastructure development, Mezmay looks more like a small village than a village, because its population is less than a thousand people. Even the asphalt road ends at the entrance, and all the streets in the village are unpaved. There are two shops here: the Doc Mac supermarket and the Kostin Grocery Store. They can buy the most necessary products, ice cream, drinks, beer and alcohol are sold, but prices are significantly higher than in chain supermarkets in cities. If you need to save money, it is better to buy products in the chain supermarkets "Magnet" or "Pyaterochka" in Apsheronsk.

There are no travel agencies here, excursions are organized by some recreation centers and guest houses. Also, the services of guides are offered by local residents and SUV drivers. You can find their contacts of private traders on the bulletin board in the center of the village and in other places on poles and fences, and they are also "on duty" at the entrances of tourist routes.

Hotels and accommodation in Mezmay, where to stay

There are very few accommodation options in Mezmay, prices are higher than in the beach resorts of the Krasnodar Territory. There are no hotels with services here, you will have to stay at recreation centers, guest houses or houses of local residents.

A lot of people who want to relax from Krasnodar or neighboring regions come to Mezmay for the weekend, so it is necessary to book accommodation in advance, otherwise there may simply not be enough places. If it was not possible to make a reservation in advance, then you can try to find something on the spot, but there is no guarantee that you will find it. On the spot, you can search for accommodation in a few recreation centers by signs on the streets (they are still at the entrance to the village), or go to the center in the area of the House of Mac store, and look for a stand with private ads there, and perhaps you will be able to rent a room from local residents. Well, as an option, you can stay in Apsheronsk.

In the summer in Mezmay, you can hang out in your tent, there are plenty of places to set up a camp. However, information boards about the prohibition of the installation of tents hang around the village, in practice, this does not stop tourists. In addition, you can set up a camp in one of several places on the outskirts of the village. For example, there is a great place at the beginning of the route to the Isichenko waterfalls, there are even wooden tables installed there.

Weather in Mezmay, tourist seasons

The climate in Mezmay is mild, typical of the Russian south: winters are not very cold, and summers are not too hot. The coldest months are December-February, but even at this time the temperature rarely drops much below 0. In winter, the surrounding mountains are covered with snow. The tourist season here lasts all year round, but in winter the number of available attractions is limited, it is not safe to walk along the routes.

High tourist season and the best time to travel from June to September. During these months, the air warms up to +25 during the day, there is not much precipitation. Since the village is located at altitudes of about 700 meters above sea level, even in the hottest months it is cool in the evenings and at night, take warm clothes.

It is worth mentioning separately about May. This is already a warm month, but also the rainiest of the year, so it is not very recommended for hiking.

How to get to Mezmay

Transport in Mezmay is very poorly developed, and it is best to come here by private car. If you don't have your own transport, you can take buses through Apsheronsk (they only go three times a week) or by taxi. Also from resorts of Krasnodar Krai you can buy one or two-day excursions to Mezmay. Here are all the ways to learn more:

• By car

  A good asphalt road leads to Mezmay through Apeshronsk. The last 52 kilometers are a winding road with descents and ascents. Be careful when driving on it, do not exceed the set speed. There is also a shorter road from Maykop through the villages of Dagestan or Bezvodnaya, but it is unpaved, and we do not recommend going this way, it is better through Apsheronsk.

  Another road connects Mezmay with the village of Kamennomostskiy and other resorts of Adygea. But this is a very bad primer through the forest, which not every car and driver can overcome. Moreover, the road leads from Mezmay to the descent, and from Adygea to the ascent, and only trucks and serious full-drive SUVs can overcome this ascent. On conventional crossovers, it's better not to go on the rise.

  At the entrance to Mezmay, the asphalt ends abruptly, all roads in the village are only unpaved and rocky. You can drive through them in any car without any problems, but you need to drive slowly and with caution, otherwise you can damage the car. There are also several automobile bridges over rivers in the village, including a wooden one.

  There is no gas station in Mezmay, the nearest one is in Apsheronsk. There are network Lukoy, Rosneft and others. Keep in mind that gasoline consumption is high due to descents and ascents, it is better to go here with at least half a tank.

  There are no problems with parking in the village, there are no signs prohibiting parking or stopping either. You can leave your car while walking to the sights at the sites before the start of the route or anywhere on the side of the road, while all this is free.

• By bus

  You can get to Mezmay by bus only from Apsheronsk, there are no other options. There are no buses at all, including from Guamka. A small suburban bus (minibus) departs from a stop near the Apsheronskaya bus station three times a week in Apsheronska (Apsheronsk station on the map)., fare - 90 rubles. During the low season or with low demand, flights may be canceled, and then you will only have to go by taxi. You will have to check the schedule on the spot or by calling the Apsheronsk railway station: (8-86152) 21930. Here is the schedule as of 2021:

  • Apsheronsk-Mezmay: only Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday 07:00 and 15:00
  • Mezmay- Apsheronsk: only Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday 14:00

• By plane or train

  If you are going to get here from distant regions, it is best to take a plane or train, and the last part of the way to Mezmay by taxi. The nearest airport is located in Krasnodar (Pashkovsky Airport), where many low-cost flights are operated from the regions of the Russian Federation.

  It is most convenient to get from the airport by taxi or use a ready-made tourist transfer. A ready-made tourist transfer can be booked online on the website kiwitaxi or via the search form:

  If you decide to go by public transport, then you will first have to get from the airport by local transport to the Krasnodar-1 bus station in the city center (at least 1 hour on the way), there transfer to an intercity bus to Apsheronsk, and from Apsheronsk in turn go by taxi or local bus. This whole move can take a whole day, and there is a chance to get stuck somewhere along the way for the night due to the cancellation of bus flights or not connecting according to the schedule.

  The train is also the most convenient way to go to Krasnodar. Of course, there are railway stations closer to Apsheronsk, for example in Goryachy Klyuch, but it is cheaper and easier to get by bus or taxi from Krasnodar.   Another good option is to take the train to Belorechensk. A lot of passing trains to Adler stop at Belorechensk station, so in high season (in summer) it will not be a problem to find a suitable train flight there at all. In turn, from Belorechensk to Guamka, you will have to take a taxi (from 2000 USD) or buses with a transfer in Apsheronsk.

How to get to Mezmay from Guamka

The villages are only 8 kilometers from each other, but the asphalt road leads around 22 kilometers. There are no direct buses, you will have to go with a transfer or by taxi.

A taxi will cost about 500 rubles, you can order through the Yandex.Taxi app.

Buses connect both villages only with Absheron, and you can transfer to them in Nizhny Novgorod at the turn. But you need to adjust to the schedule, because they go very rarely:

• Mezmay-Apsheronsk: daily 07:00, 09:00, 13:00, 16:00
• Apsheronsk-Mezmay: only Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday 07:00 and 15:00
• Mezmay-Apsheronsk: only Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday 14:00
• Apsheronsk-Mezmay: daily 06:00, 08:00, 12:00, 15:00

Attractions in Mezmay

For most tourists, Mezmay is strongly associated with the most famous attraction – the Eagle Shelf, and many tourists do not know anything else. However, in addition to the Eagle Shelf, there are many beautiful and interesting sights in the vicinity of the village, which are accessed by walking or car-walking tourist routes of varying degrees of complexity. These are beautiful waterfalls, mountain rivers, caves, observation decks, there is even a mining museum. From here you can also visit the famous Guam Gorge and other attractions of Guamka.

To go through the most popular and more or less equipped tourist routes, two full days are enough. But if you are a lover of nature, mountains and beautiful landscapes, and you have experience of trekking and hiking trips, you will find many more interesting trails and beautiful places here. For example, you can go on a multi-day hike to the Lago-Naki plateau or wander through the surrounding forests and mountains in search of ancient structures - dolmens.

Official group excursions to routes and attractions in the village are not offered, but this service is offered by local residents and accommodation facilities (camp sites and guest houses). There is a walking tour guide, or you can choose a mixed car-walking tour by SUV or ATV. Unfortunately, all these excursions are individual and relatively expensive.

But if you love and are ready to walk, and ideally there is also your own transport, then you can visit almost all the route and attractions yourself. You can get to most of the starting points by any passenger car, and where it will no longer pass, continue on foot. This is a common practice here, and so does most of the guests of Mezmay.
