Despite the fact that most guidebooks on the Internet describe Guamka as a place with a huge number of attractions and excursions, in fact, the only place that is available to mass tourists for independent visits without additional effort is the Guam Gorge, which can be visited during a simple walk or by tourist train. If you want to visit mountains, waterfalls, caves, observation decks and other interesting places in the vicinity, you will have to walk a lot, and along mountain trails, and some places are generally accessible only after extreme ascents and descents in special shoes and with safety equipment.
If you don't like walking on mountain trails, then you can ease your heavy tourist fate a little by buying a jeep tour or a horse ride, but most of the attractions are inaccessible even for jeeps, you will have to walk to them. Jeep tours can be ordered without any problems by phone numbers indicated everywhere in the village on advertising posters or ads, or at your location. These excursions are conducted along one well-developed route with wonderful views, and you can also go to the village of Mezmay and its surroundings, because there are even more spectacular views and interesting natural places around Mezmay (see about the sights of Mezmay here ...).
From entertainment here you can go fishing, hunting, horseback riding or quad biking, shooting in the shooting range, and even paragliding. But all these entertainments are not mass, and therefore quite expensive. Independently, you can go to the thermal springs located 10 kilometers from the village.
Here is a list of attractions and entertainment of Guamka, which you can visit yourself, with an indication of opening hours, entrance fees and ways to get to them:
Guam Gorge or Guamka Gorge
Guam Gorge or Guamka Gorge is the main attraction of the village, for which most tourists come here. You can visit not only during your vacation in Guamka, but also as a one-day independent trip by car or with an excursion from Krasnodar, Kamennomostsky and other resorts of the Krasnodar Territory and the Republic of Adygea.
The gorge is formed by the Kurdzhips River, which for millions of years has washed a deep trough in the rocks. In places, its depth reaches 400 meters, and the walls narrow to 5 meters. It starts from the village of Guamka in the Krasnodar Territory, and stretches for 3.5 kilometers. At the beginning of the last century, under Soviet rule, an 8-kilometer-long narrow-gauge railway was laid through the gorge to export timber from the village of Mezmay loggers, and today a tourist train runs along it at a distance of 1707 meters from Guamka to the station and cafe "1707". Read more about the Guamka Gorge and how to visit it here.
🕐 Working hours: there is no operating mode in the gorge, i.e. theoretically it can be visited around the clock at any time of the year. The tourist train runs from 09:30 to 18:00 from Wednesday to Sunday, and at this time it is impossible to walk the section from Guamka to the cafe.
💵 Entrance fee / tickets price: on foot for free, the cost of travel in both directions by train in a closed carriage is 500 rubles adults / 250 children 7-13 years old; in an open carriage 600 rubles adults / 300 children 7-13 years old. A one-way ticket costs twice as much.
🚶 How to get there: the gorge begins in the village of Guamka and stretches for about 8 kilometers towards the village of Mezmay from the railway station (gorge on the map). You can ride along it by train 1707 meters to the next station and cafe, or walk on foot outside of train hours. There is a spacious parking lot near the station for 50 rubles a day, but you can easily park your car in any other place in the village on the side of the road. For more information about visiting the gorge, see the link with a full description.
Musical Grotto
One of the most easily visited non-equipped natural attractions in the vicinity Guamka. The grotto is notable for its acoustic properties (echo), which is why it got its name. It is located 300 meters higher than the center of the village, and it offers a good view of the surrounding area, but it is partially covered by tall trees. There is nothing much to do in the grotto itself, rather an interesting walk to it, passing through a beautiful dense forest along a stream. Read more about the Musical Grotto here.
🕐 Working hours: around the clock, it is better to visit during the day in the period from spring to autumn.
💵 Entrance fee / tickets price: free.
🚶 How to get there: located 2 kilometers from the village at an altitude of 300 meters above (grotto on the map). It is reached by a not very well distinguishable trail without signs: from the recreation center "Guamka" and "Polyana", and another from the hotel "Guamka" next to the railway station in the gorge. From the center, it is most convenient to start the journey from the Guamka Hotel. The route is not complicated, accessible even to children. The whole way there and back will take 3 hours.
Suhaya Balka Route
This is a complex tourist route along the gorge of the Sukhaya Balka River, which officially assumes passage only with guides and special equipment, independent passage is prohibited. Part of the way is wading through the water. Along the route you will pass through the canyon of the river up to 70 meters deep, get to the Yavorovy waterfall (height 80 meters), swim in natural pools, visit grottoes and caves. The gorge of the Suhaya Balka is very beautiful, and is considered to be even more beautiful than the Guam One, at the same time wilder and well preserved its pristine natural beauty.
Only trained adults will be able to master the route, and only under the supervision of an instructor, although some tourists decide to go on an independent hike. Children don't belong here at all. Read more about the Suhaya Balka and how to visit it here.
🕐 Working hours: around the clock and all year round, but it is best to visit in the summer during the daytime.
💵 Entrance fee / tickets price: free.
🚶 How to get there: the gorge of the Suhaya Balka is located approximately in the middle between the villages of Guamka and Mezmay (Suhaya Balka on the map), the entrance is located in the Guam Gorge. It is better to visit it as part of a guided tour from Guamka or Mezmay. For more information about the visit, see the link with a full description.
Monakhova Cave and waterfall
This attraction is located in the Guam Gorge, but during a standard tourist trip by train you will not see them. To get to them, you will first have to cross the Kurdzhips River (this is the main river in the gorge), and then climb the mountain trail up a steep climb of 200 meters, but in general this is not a very difficult route that tourists can overcome even without climbing experience, but caution will definitely not be superfluous. There is also a longer but safer route along the trail immediately from the village of Guamka.
The monk's cave is interesting because in the 16th century there lived a monk who was engaged in healing people with the help of water from a waterfall. But it will not be possible to inspect the cave from the inside, it is filled with water. Read more about the Monk's cave here.
🕐 Working hours: around the clock and all year round, but it is best to visit in the summer during the daytime.
💵 Entrance fee / tickets price: free.
🚶 How to get there: The Monk's Cave is located in the Guam Gorge a little more than a kilometer from Guamka (cave on the map), but to get to it, you will have to overcome a long way. There are two routes leading to it, the most famous of which is through the Guam Gorge along a steep path up from the railway station and cafe "1707". Another way is a long trail of 3.3 kilometers from the village from the Guamka hotel, which is very close to the railway station of the tourist train.
Hiking routes to the canyon of the Matuzka River, to the lookouts and waterfalls
To the southwest of Guamka there is a wooded mountain range through which the Matuzka River passes through the gorge. There are several hiking trails and a dirt road, along which you can visit several natural attractions at once in the form of a one-day hiking route or trekking for several days. So far there are no well-equipped trails for mass tourists, but if you have experience of day hikes on mountain and forest trails, good walking shoes, and a desire to see new places that have not yet been trampled by mass tourists, then you will definitely like it here. If you are not ready for hiking routes of higher than average complexity, then some of these attractions can be visited with a jeep tour from Guamka, but they can not get anywhere, and on foot you will see much more, namely: an observation deck on the Matuzka Canyon; an observation deck "Chicken and Cockerel"; waterfall and font "Bath of Youth"; waterfalls on the Matuzka River; a large grotto and a grotto with a window; an observation carpet. Read more about mashruty and sights of Matuzka, and how to visit them here.
🕐 Working hours: around the clock and all year round, but it is best to visit in the summer during the daytime.
💵 Entrance fee / tickets price: free.
🚶 How to get there: The sights and trails in the Matuzki area are visited on foot or by sightseeing jeeps. The easiest way is to walk from the village along a dirt highway, which starts in two places from Podgorny Lane, and then converges into one. From this dirt road along the way there will be trails that will lead you to individual attractions. It is possible to drive on the dirt road only on serious SUVs.
Hot springs in Nizhny Novgorod
Near Guamka at the entrance to the village of Nizhny Novgorod there are three thermal springs located on the territory of camp sites and recreation centers: Aquarius, H2O and another unnamed place. Not only guests can swim in them, but also tourists from the outside for a fee. All three sources are equipped with different levels of comfort: gazebos, changing rooms, toilets, deck chairs, cafes. The sizes of the pools are different everywhere, but the water is the same everywhere - from mountain underground springs with a temperature of about +40 all year round.
On advertising signs, you can find information that these are radon therapeutic sources, but we could not find confirmation that it is really radon, i.e. it has weak radioactivity. The official website of the Aquarius complex says that it is "mineral water ionized with silver". Even if this is the case, it is necessary to take such baths for medicinal purposes after consulting doctors for several sessions, and from one visit it is hardly worth counting on the therapeutic effect. A single appointment is rather just a pleasant procedure, and you can take them in winter.
🕐 Working hours: from 09:00 to 20:00.
💵 Entrance fee / tickets price: the cost of visiting the springs is from 200 rubles / hour and up to 500 rubles for the whole day.
🚶 How to get there: the springs are located 10 kilometers from the center of Guamka behind the village of Nizhny Novgorod (sources on the map). You can get here by private transport, taxi or buses to Apsheronsk (see the schedule how to get to guamka). However, please note that there is no official taxi service in Guam, a car for the trip must be booked in advance through local residents or hotel staff. Sometimes you can find a car with a driver in the parking lot near the railway station in the Guamka Gorge.
