Overview of Ways to Get to Sapa
Sapa is located in northwestern Vietnam in Lao Cai province, almost on the border with China and 400 kilometers from Hanoi (Sapa on the map of Vietnam). It's almost 2000 kilometers from Ho Chi Minh City!!!
Getting to Sapa, in general, is not difficult, as it is a popular and developed resort area. However, there are nuances: planes do not fly to Sapa; you mostly get here by bus or train from Hanoi (with a transfer to a bus in Lao Cai). There are also direct bus routes from cities and resorts in the northern part of Vietnam: Cat Ba, Halong, Phong Nha, Hoa Lu (Ninh Binh), Da Nang, Hue. From other cities in Vietnam, you will have to travel with transfers, most conveniently via Hanoi.
In general, the most optimal starting point for visiting Sapa is Hanoi. Hanoi is home to one of Vietnam's most important international airports, where you can fly directly or with connections from Russia and other CIS countries, making it most convenient to visit Sapa for a few days at the beginning or end of your trip. And what's great is that you can buy a ready-made two or three-day tour from Hanoi to Sapa, and then you won't have to worry about transport.
We'll tell you in detail about all the methods with schedules and costs in our honest guide below, but to start, here are brief instructions by direction:
- From cities in Russia, CIS and other countries. Fly to the nearest Hanoi airport, and from there by taxi or direct bus (online booking only), or transfer to a train or bus in Hanoi (see below).
- From Hanoi Airport. Passing buses go directly from Hanoi Airport, but there is no ticket counter at the airport itself. So you need to buy them online in advance. Another option is a taxi or go to Hanoi and transfer to a bus or train there (most likely you'll need to spend the night in Hanoi).
- From Ho Chi Minh City. It's best to fly to Hanoi, and from there to Sapa, but you can also take a bus or train (over a day) to Hanoi and transfer to a train or bus there. Alternatively, if you don't want to go to Hanoi, you can go via Da Nang, Hue, Hoa Lu (Ninh Binh). Any of these options will involve at least one overnight stop for transfer, but it's better to plan a few to explore the transfer resort.
- From Hoa Lu (Ninh Binh). There are ready-made, conditionally direct bus services from several companies; we used HK BusLines. The trip is on one ticket but involves changing buses in Hanoi; the transfer is organized by the company. Tickets are sold online, at street agencies, and hotels.
- From Cat Ba Island, Da Nang, Hue, Phong Nha. There are ready-made, conditionally direct bus services from several companies. The trip is on one ticket but may involve changing buses in Hanoi or at Hanoi Airport. Tickets are sold online, at street agencies, and hotels.
- From Nha Trang. It's best to fly to Ho Chi Minh City and transfer to a train or bus. You can also take a train or bus to Hanoi, but it's long and tiring and will require an overnight stay in Hanoi.
- From Mui Ne/Phan Thiet. Fly from Ho Chi Minh City Airport to Hanoi. Theoretically, there are buses and a passing train to Hanoi, but it's a very long journey across the country. If you do decide to travel overland, we advise going with intermediate stops to rest and explore other resorts along the way. Hue (imperial capital) or Da Nang (beaches, My Son ruins, Hoi An, Ba Na Hills) are especially convenient and interesting.
From Hanoi. You can buy a ready-made tour with hotel accommodation, train or bus tickets, trekking with guides, or go by train to Lao Cai with a bus transfer, or directly by bus. Everything runs frequently and conveniently; you can choose any option that suits you.
Now let's look at each method in detail:
To Sapa with a Tour
One of the most convenient and interesting ways to visit Sapa from Hanoi. Cost - from $80 USD. The cost includes accommodation, transport, a tour with trekking to a village. Often such tours are sold and positioned as trekking in Sapa, and they really include minimal free time in the city and are narrowly focused on trekking. They take 2 or 3 days.
But there are also extended options during which you can visit other places in Sapa and its surroundings independently or with a guide, as there is still a lot more here (see our guide to Sapa sights). We advise precisely such options, and for this, you need to find out the tour program in detail before purchasing, not trusting the seller's general words.
Important advice regarding hotels in Sapa with tours!
If you buy a package tour (excursion) to Sapa at travel agencies in Hanoi, be very careful in choosing the hotel. The thing is, there are not uncommon cases when tourists are shown wonderful photos of a hotel with a mountain view at the travel agency, but upon arrival, it turns out the hotel is quite bad and doesn't look like the photos from the travel agency. Therefore, before deciding to buy a tour with a specific hotel, take the trouble to ask for its name (it will be indicated on your voucher after purchasing the tour) and read its real description and guest reviews in hotel booking systems or on Google Maps
Where to buy tours to Sapa from Hanoi
At any travel agency in Hanoi, of which there are many in the tourist area near Hoan Kiem Lake (Lake of the Returned Sword). Go into agencies, ask for the program, compare prices. The same offers are available at many hotels.
If you don't have time for such searches, you can buy in advance online on websites with reviews, and then the tour will be "waiting" for you in Hanoi upon arrival:
- Trip.com (Russian cards and SBP work 💳)
- GetYourGuide
To Sapa by Plane
There is no airport in Sapa; the nearest one is in Hanoi. This is one of Vietnam's most convenient and inexpensive airports for international flights. Direct and connecting flights via third countries are operated here.
Our advice: Connecting flights allow you to save considerably on flights compared to direct ones, sometimes by half!!! However, when choosing flight options, we advise buying a single ticket, not buying separately. The thing is, if you buy a single ticket, the airline is responsible for your connection, and if you miss the connecting flight due to a delay of the first flight, the airline will rebook you at its expense. But if you buy separate tickets, you are responsible yourself and will have to buy a new ticket at your own expense.

How to Get from the Airport to Sapa
Hanoi Airport is 280 kilometers from Sapa, which is at least 4 hours by taxi, 6 hours by bus, and about a day by train, considering the need to get to the train station and time for connections, since traveling by train involves a transfer. We'll now talk about direct ways to get from the airport, and all other ways to travel with a transfer via Hanoi in more detail below.
For planning a trip with a transfer in Hanoi, our guide-instructors will be useful:
-
Taxi
- 💵 Cost: from 2,500,000 dong / 95.05 USD
- ⏲ Travel time: from 4-6 hours
- 🎫 Where to buy: Grab, Xanh Sm apps, Trip.com, Intui.travel and others
You can find a car on the spot at the counter in the terminal, order through taxi apps Grab, Xanh Sm, Maxim, InDrive, or online on transfer websites:
- Trip.com (Russian cards and SBP work 💳)
- Kiwitaxi
- Intui.travel
- GetTransfer
-
By Bus
- 💵 Cost: from 300,000 dong / 11.41 USD
- ⏲ Travel time: from 6-7 hours
- 🎫 Where to buy: Trip.com, 12go.asia
From the airport to Sapa, there are definitely direct buses (these are passing buses from Hanoi or from Cat Ba Island). Travel time 6-7 hours, cost from 300,000 dong (11.41 USD).
But the problem is that it's impossible to buy tickets for them at the airport. At least, we didn't find such an opportunity at the airport. So you need to book them online in advance and wait for the bus at the appointed time. After booking, you will receive instructions on where to wait for the bus, as there is no stop or waiting station there, and buses just make a stop to drop off and pick up passengers at a public transport stop near the airport or briefly drive up to the terminal. You can buy tickets on websites:
- Trip.com
- 12go.asia
- Baolau.com - also a reliable aggregator, mainly buses and transfers
- Vexere.com - local aggregator, many options
- futabus.vn - one of the largest local carriers Futa BusLines
- hkbuslines.vn - local operator on this route
By Train from Hanoi
- 💵 Cost: from 480,000 dong / 18.25 USD
- ⏲ Travel time: from 10 hours
- 🎫 Where to buy: https://dsvn.vn/ or 12go.asia
This is one of the most popular ways for tourists to get to Sapa from Hanoi. Travelers are attracted by the romance of traveling by train, although, in our opinion, traveling by bus is still more convenient and faster. Here's why:
- The train does not go to Sapa, but to the city of Lao Cai, where you will need to transfer to a taxi or bus.
- The night train arrives very early in the morning when scheduled buses are not yet running, but there will be many people wanting to scam you for money.
- From the night train, you will arrive in Sapa early in the morning, even before the standard hotel check-in time of 2 PM, so you'll have to spend that time on something.
If you still decide to go by train, your route will look like this: by train to the city of Lao Cai -> From Lao Cai to Sapa by taxi or bus. When traveling with a transfer to a local bus, the entire route will cost 480,000 dong (18.25 USD).
For more details about trains in Vietnam and how to use them, you can read in our separate guide. And here is the guide for this route:
-
From Hanoi to Lao Cai
Train at Hanoi station Travel time from Hanoi to Lao Cai by train is 8-9 hours. Two trains run daily; there used to be many more. Both are night trains:
- SP3 - departure 22:00, arrival 05:55
- SP7 - departure 22:40, arrival 06:25
The schedule may change; check on the official railway website https://dsvn.vn/ or on 12go.asia.
The ticket costs from 440,000 dong (16.73 USD). You can buy it on the official website or on 12go.asia via the links above, but Russian cards don't work there. Tickets are also sold at railway station ticket offices and in Old Quarter travel agencies (with a small markup). But the problem is that tickets sell out, and there's a chance of not getting a ticket at all on the day. So if possible, you need to buy at least a day or two before your planned trip.
Trains from Hanoi to Lao Cai depart from Hanoi's main railway station (Ga Ha Noi), located in the city center at 120 Le Duan (Ga Ha Noi station on the map). You can walk there from the tourist area in 20-30 minutes or take a taxi from 30,000 dong.
Another useful tip: trains in Vietnam are mercilessly air-conditioned, and it's really cold to sleep in them even under a blanket. So either dress warmer or bring tape (not the drinking kind, the sticking kind) and paper to cover the ventilation holes on the ceiling.

From Lao Cai to Sapa
Lao Cai-Sapa bus Upon arrival at the railway station in Lao Cai (Valley Lao Cai), you will need to get to Sapa by minivan, local bus, or taxi. Distance – 40 kilometers; travel time – just over an hour.
A huge number of private minivans to Sapa always await tourists arriving by train in the parking lot in front of the railway station, and with offers to take you to Sapa, you will be met immediately upon exiting the train and even by touts in the carriages.
Attention! Scam! Don't rush to agree immediately to offers to ride in a minivan, because the so-called "taxi mafia" operates here: young people catch sleepy arriving tourists, put them in minivans, collect money for the ride, and disappear. As a result, you will either sit for an hour or two and wait for a driver who will say he knows nothing and ask you for money for the ride again, or you simply won't wait for departure because, apparently, some minivans never even go anywhere. The trick is designed so that tourists simply get tired of waiting for departure and leave to find another bus. So look for a minivan that is already filled with tourists, and give money only directly to the driver. Also, a branded office operates nearby in the building where you can go and simply buy a ticket for the nearest departing bus.
You can also take a local scheduled bus. They depart every 30-60 minutes from 05:30 to 16:00, cost 40,000 dong (1.52 USD). Their stop is right in front of the railway station on the left; there is a sign.
Buses and minivans arrive in Sapa at the central square at the stop near the Sapa Church. From here, you can easily reach any hotel in the city on foot with light luggage, or by taxi. If you agree with the minivan driver in advance upon departure, he may deliver you to the hotel door.

Many buses run frequently from Hanoi to Sapa. On the new expressway, they reach Sapa directly in just 6-7 hours. Both tourist limousine minivans and Sleeper and VIP buses operate on the route. We have described all bus types in a separate guide: Buses in Vietnam and How to Use Them.
You don't even have to buy a bus ticket in advance; you can buy it on the day or even before departure, as long as it's not during major holiday periods like Vietnamese or Chinese New Year. All bus options are quite comfortable for the trip; you can sleep in them. Also good is that they have a more frequent schedule than trains, and you can choose a transfer at a convenient time. But most importantly, you don't need to transfer in Lao Cai as with the train.
Departure in Hanoi is from the tourist area from company offices, or they will pick you up from your hotel by minivan and take you to the bus station to transfer to a large bus.
There is no centralized bus station in Sapa, but most buses stop at the area near the Sapa market (conventional Sapa bus station on the map). Some buses take you to their office, and some offer a hotel transfer included in the price.
You can buy tickets to Sapa in Hanoi at travel agencies and hotels, or directly at the offices of bus companies in the tourist area near the lake. You can buy in advance on websites:

By Bus from Other Cities in Vietnam to Sapa
As we already mentioned, routes to Sapa from distant resorts in Vietnam most often go with a transfer in Hanoi. Direct flights known to us – from Hanoi, Cat Ba, and Ninh Binh (Hoa Lu). But this is not a problem at all, since logistics in Vietnam are excellently developed, and many companies offer flights with transfers in Hanoi, the airport, or other places on a single ticket. That is, you buy one ticket and get a voucher and instructions for the transfer, or an accompanied transfer with the help of company staff.
Such tickets are offered at least from Da Nang, Hoi An, Hue, Phong Nha, Cat Ba. From cities farther north than Da Nang, a transfer in Da Nang is usually offered, but it's a very hard journey. So we advise traveling from distant destinations with rest along the way, and even better to fly to Hanoi.

From Laos to Sapa
Routes from Sapa to/from Laos to the cities of Luang Prabang and Muang Khua are quite popular among tourists. International bus service operates via the border crossing near Dien Bien Phu city, where you can get a visa on arrival (not required for Russian citizens). These transfers are very long, but fortunately, they are carried out overnight on sleeper buses. Sometimes there are bus changes in Dien Bien Phu or at the border. Buses from Sapa depart at 6-7 PM, travel time to Luang Prabang is almost a day, to Muang Khua about 16 hours. Cost from $25 to Luang Prabang, and from $17 to Muang Khua.
You can buy tickets on these routes at hotels or travel agencies in Sapa, as well as through websites 12go.asia and https://www.baolau.com. If you don't find tickets through these sites, it doesn't mean at all that there are no buses; sometimes routes disappear from the search for some reason, although they are actually operating. In that case, simply buy tickets on the spot at hotels and travel agencies.
Even if you can't buy ready-made tickets on the spot, you can easily plan an independent trip with a bus change in Dien Bien Phu. For this, independently buy a ticket Sapa-Dien Bien Phu (usually a passing night service from Lao Cai) for 250,000 dong, departure from Sapa at 6:00 PM. In Dien Bien Phu, bus connections are made easily: the night bus from Sapa arrives at 5 AM, and buses to Laos depart a bit later from the same bus station. Here are the costs and schedule:
- Muang Khoa (Muang Khoa) at 05:30, 115,000 dong.
- Udomxay (Udomxay) at 06:00, 230,000 dong.
- Luang Nam Tha (Luang Nam Tha) at 06:30 and 07:30, 350,000 dong.
- Bo Keo (Bo Keo) at 06:15, 560,000 dong.
- Phong Sa Ly (Phong Sa Ly) at 07:15, 345,000 dong.
- Luang Prabang (Luang Prabang) at 06:00 and 07:00, 402,000 and 495,000 dong.
In the worst case, you can spend the day and overnight in Dien Bien Phu, as it is quite an interesting city with many historical sights.

On Rented Transport
If you are traveling on rented or purchased transport (see how to buy a motorbike in Vietnam), you can get to Sapa by three routes:
- From Hanoi via Lao Cai. This is the most standard and short route.
- From Hanoi via Muong Hoa Valley. This is the most scenic route to Sapa. 20 kilometers before reaching Lao Cai, you need to turn left and drive along the river on a good asphalt road. Already in Muong Hoa Valley itself, when the villages of Ban Ho, Ta Van and others begin, the road becomes much worse, but you can pass without problems.
- From Dien Bien Phu via Tram Ton Pass. This road can be used to arrive from/to Laos.
Just note that you cannot travel on the new expressway from Hanoi to Lao Cai on motorbikes, but there are many parallel routes.
And also don't forget about the possibility of transporting motorbikes on the train from Hanoi, so as not to cover this distance under your own power.
