How to get from Hanoi Noi Bai airport to the city

Hanoi Noi Bai International Airport is a relatively small airport located 45 kilometers north of the city. You can see the location of Hanoi airport on our interactive map of Hanoi.

Arriving at the airport, you will not experience problems with where to go and where to look for a taxi or bus. The airport building is small, and the exits from the airport face one side, where you can easily find transport.

  • Taxi

    Hanoi City Taxi

It is the fastest way to get to the airport or to the city, only 30-40 minutes. At the airport and in the parking lot at the exit from the first floor there are many racks where you can pick up a taxi for yourself. The cost does not differ much. It is possible to travel at a fixed price or by a meter (Taxi-meter), but usually taxi drivers are reluctant to agree to "counter". A fixed-price trip will cost from 350,000 VND (13.31 USD, see Vietnam's currency and exchange rate). You can also order a car via Grab application. Grab is the Asian version of Uber (Uber no longer operates in Vietnam as of 2018). Grab is almost no different in interface, but it is only in English, payment in cash or by card online. Trips via Grab are even cheaper than ordering a taxi on the spot: from 340,000 VND to the tourist area of Hanoi. You can connect to the Internet via Free Wi-Fi at the airport.

If you do not want to get involved with local Crooked taxi drivers, you can book a tourist transfer in advance. This is almost the same as a taxi, but with an increased level of Service. Upon arrival, a car will be waiting for you, and the driver will meet you with a sign. There will be no problems with the language barrier, payment is made online when booking, so you do not have to change money at the airport. You can check the prices for the transfer and book it through the search form:

  • Rent a car

Since 2014, in Vietnam, on completely legal grounds, you can drive a rented vehicle with an international driver's license (IDP) that meets the requirements of the Vienna Convention on road traffic (Read more about motorcycle and car rental in Vietnam). These are issued in the Russian Federation. Just do not forget that the IDI is valid only upon presentation in conjunction with national rights. You can get an IDP in the traffic police at the place of residence, their cost is 1600 rubles. Repeated exams are not required.

The price for renting a car in Vietnam is still quite high - from $ 50 per day. Offices of international distributors have opened in the country, and now you can book your car in Vietnam here.

  • Vientam Airlines Minibus (Hanoi Airport Minibus)

Minibus to the airport near the office

As soon as you exit the airport terminal on the ground floor, you will see minibuses with Jetstar and Vietnam Airlines logos. They are sent as they fill up and move without any schedule starting in the early morning and until about 22 hours. Travel time-45-60 minutes. The cost of a trip to them is 40,000 VND (1.52 USD), paid in a minibus. For very large luggage, you will have to pay an additional 40,000 VND, and for an additional fee of $1-2, the driver will take you to the hotel door. Otherwise, you can get off near the lake of the returned sword near the tourist area, or go to the "final" address: Quang Trung, 2 (Office / destination on the map of Hanoi). From there, you can take a taxi to your hotel or get there on foot. The office is a short walk from the Lake "returned sword" and 10 minutes from the main tourist area (on the map, the walking route from the office to the tourist area is shown in blue).

You can also take this minibus from the city to the airport, but keep in mind that they are sent by occupancy, and therefore it is better to come in advance, with a time limit of at least one hour. You can also buy tickets in advance at the office at the "terminal" at the address: Quang Trung, 2.

  • City buses

Bus number 86 from the airport

This is the cheapest way to get to the city center. Cost - from 9000 VND (0.34 USD), plus the same amount for luggage, if it is large. Travel time is an hour and a half, longer during rush hours. The buses are quite comfortable, with air conditioning, but often crowded. They run from 05:00 to 22:00 every 15-20 minutes.

City buses depart from the opposite side of the road from the domestic terminal, they do not stop near the international terminal (the exception is Route No. 86). If you get out of the internal terminal on the first floor, you will have to cross a busy highway, slightly bypassing the dividing strip between the streams. You can also go to the opposite side from the second floor of the terminal directly over the bridge. On the map we marked the exact city buses stop at the terminal. Be careful: they will try to put you in a commercial bus or taxi, and convince you that the city bus is no longer there, or that the stop is very far away. Don't believe it.

There are several routes from the airport:

    • #17 goes to Long Bien station (seemap) past the tourist area. Even if you miss the exit near the tourist area (and you need to leave after the bridge), reaching the final stop of Long Bien you can easily reach the tourist area on foot (20 minutes). Where Long Bien station is located, See also interactive map.
    • Express bus No. 86. Makes stops near the exit at each of the terminals, and goes to the lake of the returned sword (to the tourist center of the city) and downloads the route at the railway station of Hanoi. From the airport departs from 06:25 to 23:05, from Hanoi from 05:05 to 21:40 every 25-30 minutes according to the schedule. This is a great alternative to the crowded city bus number 17, it only has seats, but unlike the previous two routes, it costs 35,000 VND (1.33 USD). In addition, he does not make many stops along the way. Read more read about Route 86 from Hanoi airport here...
    • No. 7 goes to Kim Ma station. It is quite far from the tourist area, from there you will have to take a taxi or change to another bus.

Hanoi tour bus

Quite a convenient way to move around Vietnam and Asia in general – travel on tourist or so-called openbus (openbus).

In order to take advantage of such a bus, you do not have to look for these bus stations. Some tour buses depart directly from the tourist area and you can walk to the departure point from the hotel.

If you arrive in Hanoi by intercity bus, then you should know which bus station in Hanoi will be your final destination in order to plan your further movement around the city:

  • In the center of Hanoi Station "Kim Ma bus station" (pho Nguyen Thai Hoc intersection & Pho Giang Vo) - buses of the northwest direction (Hoa Binh, Dien Bien Phu).
  • 2 kilometers northwest of the city center is the "Gia Lam bus station" (827 1569; D Ngoc Lam). Northeast buses: Ha Long Bay (Ha Long, 40,000 VND, 3.5 hours); Haiphong (Haiphong, 35,000 VND, 2 hours); Lang Son (50,000 VND, 3 hours); Lao Cai (53,000 VND, 9 hours).

Hanoi by train

Hanoi railway station

Traveling by train in Vietnam is considered quite convenient and comfortable. The railway links all major cities of Vietnam.

Hanoi has two train stations. One of them-Gia Lam-is located in the northeast of Hanoi (position of Gia Lam on the map). From this station, daily trains depart in the only direction-Nanning and Penin in China).

All other trains depart from Hanoi's Main Station (Main Hanoi Train Station or Ga Ha Noi) which is located in the city centre at 120 Le Duan. position of Hanoi's main railway station on the map. The station is very conveniently located, and Hoan Kiem Lake (tourist area) can be reached in 25,000 VND by taxi on the meter, or on foot in 25 minutes. From this station you can go:

  • Southbound: to Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) following through all major cities including Hue, Da Nang (Hoi An), Nha Trang;
  • East direction: Haifong (to get to Halong Bay) or Cat Ba Islands;
  • Northwest direction: Lao Cai (Sapa).

Near the tourist quarter of Hanoi, there is another small station (or rather train stop) Ga Long Bien, where some trains departing from the main station make a stop. If the train you plan to travel on makes a stop there, you can board or get off the train on it, and almost immediately find yourself in a tourist area.

Hanoi railway station ticket offices

Buy train tickets in advance (at least a few hours in advance, and preferably the previous day) and preferably directly at the ticket offices of the main station. There are cash desks at Hanoi Station from 7.30 to 12.30 and from 13.30 to 19.30. there are several cash desks and an electronic queue (get a ticket and wait for your number), but it (electronic queue) is practically not observed by anyone. Therefore, just get a ticket and get in a live queue to the window. Even at the station in the waiting room there is a ticket office for unclaimed tickets (Immediate tickets), where you can buy tickets immediately before departure, but this is as luck would have it. At the station in one of the windows there is always a staff speaking English.

You can also book tickets online at 12go.asia. There are more sites http://www.saigonrailway.com.vn/ and http://www.vr.com.vn where all train schedules are presented, but they are in Vietnamese.

You can also buy tickets at travel agencies, at the reception of hotels, at ticket sales offices in the city. However, agencies can inflate prices at times. In addition, you may be a victim of a very popular fraud: pay an agent for an expensive ticket, and really get the cheapest class.

Useful information:

Station schedule
  • Exit to the platform from the waiting room occurs only upon presentation of a ticket
  • On the platform, tourists are met by the "staff", who, having taken your ticket, hurries to take you to the train so that you do not get lost. For their services, this "staff" then asks for one or two dollars. If you do not want to pay for such a wiring, it is better to immediately refuse their services and take your ticket from them. And to find the train yourself, just go where everyone is going. Each train departs from its line, which is marked with a sign, look for such a sign.
