Description and is it worth visiting
Muong Hoa Valley – is one of the most beautiful places in Vietnam, and definitely the most beautiful in the surroundings of Sapa, as well as the main place for trekking to ethnic villages, for which the area around this mountain town is so famous.
The valley starts almost from the city itself and stretches for about 25 kilometers along the Muong Hoa River, turning into the Muong Ba Valley. Along Muong Hoa, like walls, rises a chain of mountains, protecting from bad weather and winds, and at its bottom, the Muong Hoa River meanders. Apparently, thanks to these almost ideal conditions, many ethnic tribes have settled and founded their villages here: H'mong, Dao, Tay, Giay, Xa Pho (also Phula).
The valley is very beautiful on its own, but decorated with man-made emerald rice terraces on the slopes, it is simply stunning. That's why Muong Hoa has become the most popular tourist destination in Lao Cai province and northern Vietnam. People visit it on trekking tours or independently, and now full-fledged eco-resorts have appeared here in the form of hotels in villages and on mountain slopes surrounded by magnificent nature.
How to visit Muong Hoa Valley
It's important to understand that Muong Hoa Valley is not a specific point of interest that you arrive at to visit. It's a large-scale natural object, stretching for many kilometers. Some tours include a stop at Muong Hoa in their descriptions of car or bus routes, but in fact, this is a stop at one or several viewpoints or a visit to one of the ethnic villages.
However, in our opinion, only trekking tours, preferably with overnight stays, give a full picture of all the beauties of Muong Hoa Valley. It is along the paths and roads of Muong Hoa that those famous classic trekking tours pass, which we described in detail in a separate guide "Trekking in Sapa in practice with a tour or independently".
Traditionally, routes through the valley include visiting one or several villages (with overnight stays in one of the villages on multi-day trips), waterfalls, walks through rice fields, bamboo groves, the field of ancient stones, swimming in the river. And the longest trek to Ban Ho village also includes visiting hot springs and the Spring of Life.
The asphalt road TL152 runs through the entire valley, following the bends of the river. It's not in the best condition, as it is periodically washed out by rains and landslides, after which it is constantly repaired. But you can drive carefully even by car and motorbike. From the road, branches go in different directions: down to the river and villages, or up into the mountains, where there are also villages and even isolated mountain hotel-resorts.
After the most remote village, Ban Ho, 25 kilometers from Sapa, the road turns left along the river with several dams and to other villages, and eventually reaches the main highway to Lao Cai - Hanoi. This is also a very beautiful section with views, but there is almost nothing touristy there. But if you're traveling from Hanoi by motorbike, you can get to Sapa via this road, as it is much more beautiful than the short route from Lao Cai.
🕐 Opening Hours
24/7, best to start trekking early in the morning.
💵 Entrance Fee / Ticket Price
Entrance to the valley for tourists is paid – 150,000 VND (5.7 USD). Payment is made at the checkpoint on the TL152 road from the Sapa side (checkpoint on the map). The other entrance through Cat Cat Village is also paid - 150,000 VND. If you enter the valley by road from the other side, from Lao Cai towards Ban Ho village, there is no checkpoint there.
🚶 How to Get There
You can visit the valley on foot as a one-day or multi-day trekking hike as part of a tour group or independently (see more about trekking in Sapa and how to do it yourself in our guide). The villages in the valley have all the conditions for easy trekking without camping gear: shops and cafes, hotels and a variety of guesthouses – homestays. The main trails and roads are marked on Google maps and community maps like Organic Maps, Maps.me and OSM. Here are the most visited and developed villages in order of distance from Sapa:
- Cat Cat (H'mong)
- Y Linh Ho
- Lao Chai (H'mong)
- Ta Van (Giay)
- Giang Ta Chia (Dao people)
- Ban Ho (Dao).
