Observation deck on Mount Tianshong

Popular with advanced tourists and local vacationers, the Tianshon Dinh or Tien Son Dinh mountain peak in Phu Quoc is one of the natural attractions of the island. Its height is no more than 500 meters above sea level, and almost at the very top there is a magnificent observation deck with views of both coasts of Phu Quoc at once. The ascent of medium difficulty takes from 30 minutes to 1 hour in one direction, depending on physical fitness, and it is better to plan 3 hours for the entire route there and back with rest at the top. We do not recommend going with small children or if you are in poor physical condition. Although the route is not physically very difficult, nevertheless, in some places along the way there are very steep ascents, and almost all along you will have to climb stones and tree roots. In the most difficult sections, the trail is additionally equipped with ropes and ladders, which, of course, will add a little extreme.

Important! It is better not to go on the route without sports or hiking shoes. In beach slippers it will be very uncomfortable and even dangerous, you can get injured.

Sometimes you can find a warning that it is impossible to go to the top of Tianshon without a guide, but this is not true. The path that starts from the roadside cafe is well trodden, there are signs along the way, so you won't get lost. The whole way goes through the forest, not under the direct rays of the sun. If you are lucky, you can actually see local inhabitants among the vegetation, such as monkeys, lizards, bats. Do not forget to stock up on enough water, because there are no springs along the way. It's a good idea to take even a snack with you.

When the climb is behind you, you will be rewarded with spectacular views from the observation deck to the expanses of the island with strips of beaches, the sea, fishing villages and dense green forests. Both the east and west coasts, the airport and new resorts will be visible. But the most interesting and memorable, so to speak, "highlight" of this place will be the stunning views of the planes landing and taking off, due to the fact that Phu Quoc Airport is located nearby. Only to see this, you need to be patient or know the flight schedule. The schedule can be specified on the airport's website.

At the top there is a picnic area with a bamboo deck and several hammocks, where you can not only lie down and relax in the shade, but also have a snack. Local hiking enthusiasts come here overnight to spend the sunset and meet the sunrise.

Useful information to visit:

  • It is not easy to find a passage to the path leading to the observation deck, it is blocked by private buildings. Focus on the roadside cafe, at the gate of which there are signs on the side of the road with the name "Tien Son Dinh" (coordinates on the map below)
  • Plan your visit time so that you can return before dark, because it gets dark early, already at 17-18 hours. Recall that it is better to schedule 3 hours for the ascent and descent.
  • The best time to conquer the Tianshon peak is the dry season (approximately from December to April), because during the rainy period the road is washed out and the ascent can be dangerous. In addition, on a rainy day, it is unlikely to be possible to appreciate the beauty that opens from the top.
  • Wear closed sports or hiking shoes, take drinking water and a raincoat.

🚶 How to get there

The observation deck on Tien Son Dinh Mountain is located in the central part of the island near the airport (observation deck on the map). As we noted above, you will have to walk up the trail to the observation deck. We don't have exact data on the climb, but it feels like it's about 200-300 meters of climb. The route is of medium complexity, easily overcome by a healthy person. On Google maps and Yandex Map Editor Maps.me or Organic maps the trail directly to the observation deck is not marked, but in general there is one road here and does not diverge, it is difficult to make a mistake. More precisely, there is a path on Google maps, but it leads incorrectly and is marked as a street. In fact, after passing through the cafe, you need to walk to the beginning of the forest and the foot of the mountain (about 400 meters), and then go left (another 200 meters), and there will be a pointer to the beginning of the trail into the forest. Well, when you have already reached the top platform, you will run into another path perpendicular to it, there you will need to turn to the observation deck to the right. On our map we have marked the exact position of the observation deck, be guided by it.

To get to the beginning of the route (trail) to the mountain, you can use a taxi, rented transport and even local buses. The trail starts in a cafe with the same name, it is located along the main asphalt road, there is a homemade sign:

Homemade sign near the cafe

Or just focus on the exact coordinates of the cafe on our map (cafe and entrance to the route on the map). Passage to the trail through the cafe is free, for parking a motorcycle they ask for 10,000 VND. If you don't want to pay for parking, you can park your motorcycle or car outside the cafe.

You can also get here by bus route 20, while the ride on it is free. This bus runs from the new GrandWorld district through Duong Dong to the pier, but does not pass through other tourist areas. Here is the route on the map, there is also a schedule. Theoretically, it is possible to get to the center of Duong Dong from tourist areas by buses No. 17 and No. 19 and change to the "twenty" there, but the bus rarely runs, you need to adjust to the schedule.
