Thomas Beach, also called "big Padang" or simply Padang is located in the south of Bali on the western shore of the Bukit Peninsula (Thomas Beach on the map). Do not confuse it with Padang-Padang Beach, this is a different place, although both beaches are connected at low tide along the shore. It is quite far from the main crowded tourist areas, for example, almost 30 kilometers from Kuta and the airport here. So Thomas Beach can be called remote and secluded, even almost wild. Nearby there is a small tourist village with hotels and basic infrastructure.
We visited this beach, and we can say for sure that if you want to go somewhere during the day in these parts to relax on the beautiful shore and swim away from the crowds of vacationers, then this place is suitable. To the south and closer to Kuta and the airport on this coast there is also a chain of beaches, for example Padan Padang, Bingin, Dreamland, Balangan and others. We've been all over them and checked them out, and Thomas liked it the most here.
Thomas is quite long, so here you can find both a secluded place in the shade of palm trees, and relax next to a cafe and at least a beach infrastructure, there are even deck chairs. There are also opportunities for novice surfers, there is a board rental and a school. And what's nice, the entrance here is free.
But now about the downsides, of course they are. At low tide, the bottom opens, rocky and covered with algae (see photo below). So, of course, not all along the beach, but there is. And where there are no algae, small stones interfere with walking along the bottom at low tide.
How to get to Thomas Beach
Thomas Beach is located on the western shore of the Bukit Peninsula (Thomas on the map). This is almost the most extreme south of the island of Bali, it takes almost an hour to drive from the airport and from Kuta due to traffic jams and winding roads.
You can only get here by taxi or rented transport. A taxi from the airport will cost from 100,000(5.54 USD) up to 200,000 rupees (11.07 USD) when ordering through applications Grab, GoJek, Maxim, etc.
Immediately before the descent to the beach, a narrow dirt road leads the last 300 meters, you can only drive along it on a motorcycle, it is blocked for cars. Therefore, if you arrive by taxi or car, you will need to walk, and then down the stairs to the shore in just a couple of minutes. On a motorbike, you can drive along the "sidewalk" and the primer right up to the descent, when we were there, they didn't take money for parking.
Hotels and accommodation in Thomas Beach, where to stay
There is no tourist area near Thomas Beach, but a tourist village has been formed along the main road along the coast, where, in principle, there is everything you need for a holiday. And although it is difficult to call it a full-fledged tourist area, here you will find a cafe, a shop, and a motorcycle rental, there are several hotels and guest houses.
