Probolingo

Probolingo (Probolinggo) is a town on the north coast in the eastern part of the island. Java in Indonesia (Probolingo on the map). This is a place of little note for tourists, there is nothing to do at first glance, and even despite its location on the shore, there is no hint of a beach holiday.

However, for travelers, this is an important transit point to visit Bromo Volcano and Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park. There are three ways to get to the Bromo volcano, and the most convenient, inexpensive and popular passes through Probolingo. The volcano is only 60 kilometers away from here, and the road leads to the village of Cemoro Lawang, which is located at the very foot of the volcano. But it is not necessary to go directly to Chemoro Lavang, where there are not very many accommodation options, and the prices are too high. In the same way, you can stay in Probolingo, and from here you can get to Bromo in the form of an excursion or an independent trip within one day.

In order to stay in Probolingo for 1-2 days, everything you need is available here: several dozen hotels, cafes and restaurants, shops, offers of excursions to Bromo, and inexpensive transport, with which you can get to the volcano on a budget.

There are not very many hotels in Probolingo, only the simplest options with minimal amenities are presented. But unlike accommodation in Chemoro Lavang and other places closer to the volcano, prices here are two or even three times lower. How to get to Probolingo

You can get to Probolingo by bus or train. If you are coming from Jakarta or Yogyakarta, your route will pass through Surabaya; if from Bali, then through Banyuwangi.

• By train

  You can get to Probolingo by train from Yogyakarta, Solo, Surabaya (from Jakarta) or Banyuwangi (if you are traveling from Bali). Probolingo is located between Surabaya and Banyuwangi, all passing trains make a stop here. There are at least 6 flights a day at different times, there are night and day flights. There are no direct trains from Jakarta, and you will have to change in Surabaya or Yogyakarta.

  • From Yogyakarta, the train takes 8-9 hours on the way, costs from 74,000 rupees if purchased in advance in the cheapest class.
  • From Surabaya, the train takes 2 hours, costs from 30,000 rupees.
  • From Banyuwangi, the train takes 4-5 hours, and tickets in the most inexpensive class also cost about 30,000 rupees. If you arrive by ferry from Bali, then Banyuwangi Baru station, from where trains depart here, is within walking distance from the ferry pier.

  Probolinggo railway station (station search code - PB) is located in the city center (station on the map), and you can get to the hotel from it on foot, the city is small. The station is connected to the bus station by a shuttle bus (yellow minibuses) worth 5,000 rupees.

• By bus

  Probolingo is notorious for wiring tourists. Problems for tourists are created by intermediaries-scammers who offer bus tickets at inflated prices. They catch tourists at the railway or bus station, and under various pretexts sell tickets for regular and private buses at prices several times higher than they actually are, or put tourists on tourist minivans or taxis under the pretext that there are no regular buses. Scammers are so cunning that even while you are waiting for the bus driver, in his absence they impersonate him, collect money for travel and disappear. Just politely refuse their services, do not pay attention even if they become aggressive, look for the right bus yourself and pay the cost to the driver, and only after the bus has already left. What's bad, the locals, even when they see tourists being deceived, are silent and never help.

  Another common type of tourist divorce here is fake stations. Arriving buses from other cities, including minivans from Cemoro Lawang, do not take passengers to the Probolingo Bayuangga bus station, but drop them off at travel agencies. If you get off at such a place, you will either be offered to get to the bus station by taxi, or they will offer tickets for tourist buses, again at inflated prices. Therefore, before getting off the bus, make sure that you were brought really to the bus station. You can find out about this by the presence of other buses, or using the navigator.

  Tricks are also waiting for tourists when moving from the railway station to the bus station. Upon arrival at the railway station, you will be caught by drivers of fake minibuses with an offer to take you to the bus station at a standard price of 5000-7000 rupees. When you are already in marshutka, they will convince you that the buses to Cemoro Lawang no longer run, and they will offer a taxi instead, or again they will not bring you to a real bus station.

  Bayuangga Bus Station is the only one in the city. It is located outside the city, 5 kilometers from the center and 8 from the railway station (bus station on the map). From the railway station and from the center to it in the daytime there are shuttle buses for 5000 and 3000 rupees.

  Probolingo can be reached by bus from Surabaya, Banyuwanga, Malang. They are sent in the daytime every 1-2 hours.

  • From Surabaya and Malanga – from 20,000 rupees, 2 hours on the road
  • From Banyuwangi – from 105,000 rupees, 6-7 hours on the way
  • From/to Bondovoso (to Ijen Volcano) – from 30,000 rupees, 2 hours on the way. These minibuses depart before lunch according to occupancy.

• In Probolingo from the island of Bali

  If you need to get from Bali, you can get to Banyuwangi by bus from Denpasar (with ferry crossing). Next to the ferry, there is a railway station within walking distance, from where trains depart to Probolingo (see above). You can also take a shuttle bus or taxi from the ferry pier to the bus station of Banyuwangi Sritanjung, and take a bus from there (depart every hour during the day).   There is also a direct bus service from Denpasar to Probolingo costing from 125,000 rupees, 12 hours on the way.

• From Probolingo to the Bromo volcano and to the village of Cemoro Lawanag

  Minibuses, called "bison", depart from the Probolingo bus station to the village of Cemoro Lawanag, which is located at the foot of the volcano. To be more precise, these minibuses do not depart from the station itself, but from a stop next to it on the Jalan Raya Bromo road. This is not a regular flight, it departs according to occupancy, most often in the first half of the day, and after 16 hours you can go to them at all only if you pay the full cost for empty seats. The price is also not fixed and is called a driver depending on the number of passengers, and tourists are even more charged an increased cost. Usually the price is 35,000 rupees, after lunch it can go up to 50,000. An hour and a half on the way.

  Be careful upon arrival in Cemoro Lawanag and try to check on the navigator that you were brought to the center of the village, as on this route tourists are often taken to affiliated hostels or travel agencies that are far from the village itself.
