What to Expect and Is It Worth Visiting
The building of the Parliament of Abkhazia is one of the iconic historical places of Sukhum of modern times and one might even say a monument of modern history. The building was built in 1960 by Soviet builders for the Supreme Council of the Abkhazian Soviet Socialist Republic, and then it stood out from the rest of the buildings of the city in modern architecture and scale. It stands out even now, because there are almost no tall multi-storey buildings in Sukhumi.
But the building is not famous at all for its architecture and time of construction, but for the fact that the Parliament suffered greatly in 1993 during the war with Georgia, and has been preserved to this day in the same condition, and perhaps even worse. The building is abandoned and is not being restored, it is gradually being destroyed and overgrown with plants, which makes it even more attractive for some tourists.
You can inspect the parliament just from the outside, even so you will see traces of the brutal confrontation that broke out between the once fraternal peoples: building elements destroyed by explosions, marks from bullets and large-caliber shells. But the most interesting thing is that you can enter the building and walk around it. This should be done carefully, because his condition is questionable. Two lower floors are available for inspection, and it is impossible to climb higher, the passages are closed with bars.
