Areas and hotels in Sukhumi, where to stay

Despite the fact that Sukhum is the capital of the country and the largest city, it can simultaneously please vacationers with good beaches and a beautiful promenade. There are beaches both in the city itself and outside it on the outskirts. Moreover, if we discard subjective prejudices about the fact that city beaches must necessarily be dirty, then you can sunbathe and swim here everywhere, even in the very center of the city. Perhaps the only area unsuitable for a beach holiday is the city port.

Here is a list and a brief description of the beaches of Sukhum with an indication of how to get to them, infrastructure and entertainment, their position on the map:

The central beach of Sukhum

This is the city beach of Sukhum (Central Beach on the map). It stretches for two kilometers along the city embankment, divided into short sections by concrete breakwaters of the Soviet period. It is the most developed in Sukhum and its surroundings. There are many water attractions, attractions on the embankment, cafes, fast food, shops with souvenirs. The beach itself is pebbly, but in places there is sand, but not under water. There are changing rooms, showers, deck chairs and umbrellas for rent. You can relax on your mattress or towel.

And everything would be great here, if not for the muddy water. After all, in addition to the fact that city plums fall here after the rains, in the East the Basla (Besletka) river flows into the sea, which brings most of the silt and sand to the sea.

Lighthouse Beach

It is located on Cape Krasny Mayak immediately to the west of the city, or rather even in the western part of the city, since Sukhum still continues here and city transport runs (Lighthouse on the map). You can walk here (5 kilometers from the center), or take buses No. 2 and No. 8, trolleybus No. 2, and suburban minibuses from the Central Market.

The beach of the Lighthouse is pebbly and very long: it stretches almost continuously for five kilometers to the Gumista River, and without even being interrupted by breakwaters. It is considered the cleanest in Sukhum, at least the water here is more transparent than on other beaches. Closer to the center of Sukhum on the lighthouse there are cafes, changing rooms, sun beds and umbrellas. And then all the infrastructure comes to naught, it gradually turns into a wild beach.

Mocha Beach

Mocha Beach (also Sinop or wave) is five kilometers east of the city, but is easily accessible by city buses #2, # 5, trolleybus #2, and commuter taxis departing from the Central Market (Mocha on the map).

This beach is considered the best in Sukhum, and the most Sandy. In fact, it is not purely Sandy, there is a strip of pebbles near the water as usual, but still there is much more sand here than on the others. And this is the most youthful and "party" Beach. There is an open cafe and bar, music is playing, there is a shower and a changing room, a paid toilet, water activities, you can rent sun beds and umbrellas, even WiFi works. A little further from the cafe is already much quieter and deserted, so having arrived here you can "hang out", and if you want to retire.

Gumista Beach

This beach is outside the city in the suburb of the same name (Gumista on the map) 10 kilometers from the center. You can get there on your own transport along the asphalt road, which approaches almost to the very shore in the area of the Escher railway station, or turn earlier on the dirt paths in the shore. You can also take a bus from the Central Market to the "Ardzinba Museum", and from there walk towards the sea 1 km.

It is wild, there is no infrastructure and entertainment, there are few vacationers here. On the shore there is sand and pebbles, under water mainly pebbles. Perfect for those who want to be away from the city beach in seclusion. Although it should be noted that the solitude here is conditional, since the highway passes nearby. But if you go further east (to the mouth of the Gumista river), there are practically no vacationers.
