What to Expect and Is It Worth Visiting
The castle of the Prince of Oldenburg, or rather its ruins, is an architectural attraction of Gagra. It was erected in 1902 in the Art Nouveau style on the initiative of the Prince of Oldenburg, who was the founder of the resort. The architect was I. K. Luceransky, known at that time. Nearby was a Seaside Park, which today is one of the most beautiful and green places of the resort. In Soviet times, the castle was converted for recreation of the Soviet elite, and later renamed the sanatorium "Chaika". After the collapse of the USSR, the building was abandoned and looted, survived the fire. It was finally rendered unusable during the Georgian-Abkhazian war of 1991-1992, when the castle suffered greatly from the fighting.
Now the castle is closed to the public, it can be viewed only from the outside, and officially only from afar. The area around is fenced and guarded by dogs, repairs are underway. But the building is not restored in its original form, but is rebuilt in a completely new and arbitrary way. Unfortunately, as a historical place, this place loses its value, and the only thing worth climbing the hill with the castle is the beautiful views of Gagra and the sea.
