Gagra fortress Abaata - the most interesting historical Gagra tourist attraction. It was originally built in 5-6 centuries AD, but several times in its history it was destroyed and restored again. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Prince of Oldenburg (the founder of the resort of Gagra) ordered the destruction of part of the fortress wall, and built a hotel on the territory. Only some remains of the fortress walls and towers have been preserved, and as such the fortress is no longer there, the hotel is still operating today. You can come here and walk around the hotel along the fortress walls, or go inside in the temple area.
Also on the territory there is the oldest church of St. Hypatius (6-7 centuries AD), and the Museum of the fortress of Abaat. The temple is not only a historical place, but also an active religious object. Anyone can go inside, you just need to be dressed appropriately: no shorts and mini-skirts, a woman with a covered head and a skirt.
As for the museum, it is mainly devoted to the history of the life and work of the Prince of Oldenburg, and quite small. If you are lucky, and during the visit there will be an excursion, then a visit to the museum will be quite interesting, but an independent inspection of the exhibits, most of which are documents and photographs, will not capture every tourist.
