Cau May Waterfall: An Honest Review & Practical Visit Guide

Article and section navigation

Cau May Waterfall (its upper part)

Description and is it worth visiting

Cau May Waterfall (also Quy Khach) is located in the Muong Hoa Valley, 11 kilometers from Sapa. It's more of a cascade than a real waterfall, especially in the dry season when rivers dry up, and it turns into a weak stream flowing down the rock. Nevertheless, it's the most popular and visited waterfall in the valley, and one of the must-visit points for tourists during trekking from Sapa through the valley. Usually, this is where the two-day trek ends, and after resting at the waterfall, groups climb up to the main road and go back to the city.

Right at the bottom of Cau May, there's a small pool where you can wash your shoes after hiking through the fields. The best view is from a small wooden bridge, but it's private and paid, and if you step onto it, a person will immediately appear demanding from 5 to 10 thousand dong from you. And about halfway up the waterfall, there's a private swimming pool for 30,000 dong.

🚶 How to Get There

The waterfall is located 11 kilometers from Sapa in the Muong Hoa Valley (waterfall on the map). It's usually visited on a tour or independently during trekking through the valley (see complete guide to trekking in Sapa).

But if you wish, you can also get there by transport. Locals manage to get right up to it on motorbikes via some trails, but it's much more interesting to do the last part on foot through the fields, then you'll have a kind of mini-trek. To do this, drive from Sapa on the TL152 road through the valley, and stop opposite the waterfall (it's clearly visible from the road, but far away) near the primary school building. Here you'll need to leave your transport along the road or at the paid parking lot near the cafe, and then continue down to the river and the waterfall on foot along a trail of just over one kilometer. On the way, you'll cross a suspension bridge over the Muong Hoa River, and going a little to the left, you'll reach the foot of Cau May.
