General information about Tangalla
Tangalle (also Tangalla, Tangalle) – one of the largest cities in the south of Sri Lanka on the Indian Ocean, a popular beach resort (Tangalle on the map of Sri Lanka). Sometimes the neighboring town of Dickwella, Kudawella beach and others are referred to Tangalla as suburbs or beaches.
Tangale is one of the most beautiful beach places in the South, while the resort, although well known, is never oversaturated with tourists. The beaches here are very beautiful and very deserted, and sometimes you might think that on the long coast there is no one but you. But at the same time it is one of the most unfortunate places for swimming because of the constant big waves, perhaps the most wavy in the whole South. This is just an ideal place for those who only want to enjoy the ocean and do nothing, but active people here can seem very boring.
The usual urban infrastructure of Tangalle is quite developed. There are internet cafes and ATMs, several banks where you can exchange money. We did not find any official exchange offices (they usually have a higher exchange rate than banks) in Tangal. There is no shopping here, but you can buy the most necessary and simple souvenirs in the supermarket, in one of the many shops or in the markets. There's even an electronics store downtown near the clock tower.
At the same time, the purely tourist infrastructure here is poorly developed. There are plenty of hotels here, but there is no separate tourist area. There are few restaurants and cafes for tourists (mostly they are at hotels). It is cheaper to eat in cafes for locals, but you will have to spend time to find such establishments with good quality dishes and service. There are few travel agencies on the street, literally a few, and therefore, to search for excursions, tourists most often turn to hotel staff for help. At the same time, the services of guides through hotels are most often just a tuk-tuk driver who knows the way to interesting places and knows how to connect a few words in English.
Entertainment except for the beaches here is almost no. You can go diving or snorkeling, but the conditions due to the constant waves are not the most successful. Boat trips along the canals or on the lagoon are also a popular pastime. Another entertainment in Thangal is turtle watching, as it is one of the few places in Sri Lanka where turtles come ashore to lay their eggs in the sand. You can see it on the beach Rekawa (Rekawa Beach) a few kilometers east of the center of Tangale. Watch the turtles in the evening or at night, in the dark. That's when they come ashore to lay their eggs in the sand. You can even buy special night tours from 2200 rupees (6.65 see currency of Sri Lanka and Exchange Rate), and if you are not lucky enough to see turtles, the money is returned.
there are practically no Attractions in Tangalla. Here you can see only some old buildings in the European style, built by the Dutch (this is a courthouse, an old hotel, a judge's residence, an old fort, and now a prison). Of the natural attractions here you can see the lagoon Rekawa (Rekawa Lagoon), where you can go for a boat ride, and several small but beautiful lagoons.
Outside of Tangalle visit Yala National Park, Udawale and others, cave mulkirigala temple, Madunagala Hot Springs and other places in the South. By bus you can go to Galle or Matara and see their sights. You can also take a bus to Dikwella and visit the interesting temple Webrukannala Raja Maha Viharaya.
Tangalle Beaches
As we have already mentioned, the beaches of Tangalle are one of the most beautiful in the south, very long and deserted. Despite the fact that the beaches are in one of the largest cities in the South, being on the shore does not even think that you are in a city, but rather in a village. And it is impossible not to mention once again that this is one of the most unsuccessful places for swimming because of the constant waves even in the high tourist season. If you really want to swim in calm waters, then it is better to look for a more sheltered place from waves, such as Mirissa, Dickwellaor Unawatuna.
There are several beaches here (see their position on the map below). The main beach closest to the center is Medaketiya (Medaketiya, Medaketia (on the map). It has the largest number of hotels and hostels, more or less developed infrastructure and proximity to the city center. Further, to the Northeast, without interrupting the Sandy line, begins medilla Beach (Medilla, Medilla Beach on the map). It's even wilder and quieter, and more beautiful. Both of these beaches plus Rekawa Beach (Rekawa, Rekawa Beach on the map) stretch for almost 6 kilometers. If you walk along Rekawa Beach to a rocky cape, you can see sea turtles there.
A couple of kilometers from the city center in the West is goyambokka Beach (Goyambokka, Goyambokka Beach on the map), and a little further Pallikaduwa Beach (Pallikaduwa, Pallikaduva Beach on the map). This is also a quiet place, but with expensive hotels offering all the rest on their territory.
In the very center of the city there is no beach, the coast here is occupied by fishing marinas.
What is good, the tides in Tangalla are almost not felt and you can swim at any time, since the level differences between the lower and upper water levels are minimal. However, if it bothers you, you can use a calculated tidal forecast. Just keep in mind that, contrary to the frequent misconception, the tides do not depend on the time of day, but on the position of the moon, sun, and even coastal Relief, and for this reason it is impossible to say unequivocally that on a particular beach the tides are in the morning, and the tides in the evening, for example.
To reliably know the water level at the right time, use our forecast for six months ahead. It is calculated by the complex mathematical algorithm AVISO+ on the basis of statistical data of observations for 20 years.
Hotels In Tangalle
There are plenty of hotels in Tangal. Most of them are located in a quiet coastal area, where the hustle and bustle of the city center and the main road Tangalle Road (aka Matara Road) do not reach. The cost of a hotel room for two starts from $ 15 without air conditioning, from $ 20 with air conditioning. You can find accommodation cheaper in the form of a guesthouse or a room in the homes of local residents (from 1500 rupees at auction, about 6.65 USD). The bulk of budget hotels are concentrated on the beach Medaketiya (Medaketiya).

How to get to Tangalle
Usually, one arrives in Tangalle via Colombo International Airport, which is about 220 kilometers from the resort. But in recent years, another possibility has emerged – Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport (also Hambantota International Airport). So far, domestic flights are operated by local airlines from Colombo, as well as international flights from Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Bangkok (attention! When you arrive at Colombo Bandaranaike International Airport, the only option from there to get to Thangale directly is by taxi. The trip will cost from $ 100, 5 hours on the road. To get there faster, you can ask the driver to go on the toll road, as you will save almost an hour of time.
We recommend using a tourist transfer instead of a taxi. This is an analogue of a taxi, only ordered in advance, and has increased comfort and service, although it costs a little more. You can order at intui.travel or kiwitaxi.com, and then the driver will meet you at the airport upon arrival.
If you have free time and a desire to save money, you can get from the airport and much cheaper, although you will have to spend almost the whole day on transfers by bus or train.
In general, the trip will look like this:
-
By bus: from the airport you need to get to the Colombo bus station (by taxi or bus number 187 (details how to get from the airport to Colombo here), then take a direct bus to Tangalle (this is actually a bus to Kataragama, 6 hours on the way, cost 300 rupees, (0.91 USD). But this bus only runs 1 time per hour, so you can take a bus to Galle or Matara, and there change to a bus to Thangale. With all these transfers, changing the bus takes place without changing the bus stations, so it is difficult to get lost. To find the right bus at the stations, you should seek help from drivers or local residents. Read more about buses in Sri Lanka and how to use them here...
However, you should be careful not to run into all sorts of crooks who breed tourists at the stations. So, in Matara there is a whole gang of tuk-tukers who tell tourists that there is a special express bus to Tangale, which goes much faster but does not recover from the station. And while the hapless tourist will be waiting for this nonexistent bus, he is bred for an expensive trip to Tangale by tuk-tuk and offered an "inexpensive good brother hotel".
Sri Lanka bus -
By train: From the airport, you need to get to the railway station in Colombo by taxi or again by bus number 187. from the railway station, several trains depart during the day to Beliatta Station (aka Beliattha). This is the closest station to Tangalle, but you will have to travel another 7 kilometers from it by tuk-tuk (railway station on the map).
If there is no nearest train to Beliatta, then you can take any train to Matara or Galle, they run more often. Then transfer to the bus to Tangalle, and there and there bus stations are within walking distance to the railway stations. From Matara, you can take a tuk-tuk for about 2000 rupees after haggling (6.04 USD), and one hour.
We recommend buying tickets not for the cheapest 3rd Class, but at least in the second, because the trains are sometimes crowded, and in general a four – hour trip in the local third class is still the extreme. A third-class ticket costs 130 Rupees, second – 230, first – 420. There are at least seven trains to Matara every day, the schedule can be found on the website: https://eservices.railway.gov.lk. In general, read more about how to use trains in Sri Lanka here...

Transport in Tangalla
There is no public transport, except for buses that run on the main Matara Road. You can move on foot or by tuk-tuk. Upon arrival at the main bus station in the center, it is quite possible to walk to the main beach of Medaketiya, but it will be a long way to Medilla on foot, you will have to use a tuk-tuk.
Renting motorbikes is not common here, but can be found in hotels and guest houses. Per day, rents are asked from 2200 rupees (6.65 USD), but you can bargain, especially if you take a few days. Learn more about how and where to rent a motorbike in Sri Lanka here...
