General Information about Jaffna

Fisherman on the shore at beach in Jaffna

Jaffna or Jaffna (Jaffna) – a city in northern Sri Lanka, capital of the northern province. Located 400 kilometers from Colombo and 380 from the airport, and this is the most remote city from the country's economic capital (Jaffna on Sri Lanka map).

Jaffna and the north have always been territory predominantly inhabited by Tamils, and remain so to this day. Before the civil war in Sri Lanka, which lasted from 1983 to 2009, Jaffna was the second most popular and very developed city. But during the war it was exhausted, because it was here that one of the main strongholds of the "Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam" group was located. For several years after the end of the civil war, it was possible to get here only with special permission, today this region is completely open to tourists, there are no checkpoints, the situation is very calm. To maintain stability in the region, there are many military bases here, but their presence, like the presence of the military themselves, is not felt by tourists at all.

Vacation in Jaffna and Why Come Here

Jaffna and the north are a special region in Sri Lanka. Here there is a different culture and traditions, different from the rest of the country, because this is traditionally a Tamil region, everywhere you feel the influence of southern India, even in the cuisine. There are many Hindu temples here, and people are very friendly (however, as in all of Sri Lanka). Even the climate and nature are different here, because Jaffna and the north are the driest and hottest place in the country. Already on the way to the region from the train or bus window you will see changes: greenery and hills will be replaced by plains and deserts, and the heat becomes unbearable.

There are almost no beaches here, and those that exist are very far from the city. Tourist infrastructure is not very well developed yet, so you will have to plan and implement the route for getting acquainted with the region yourself. But it can definitely be said that Jaffna and the north are places that every real traveler to Sri Lanka should visit.

What Beaches are in Jaffna and the North

There are such cool long beaches in northern Sri Lanka, but there are features

Our opinion: Northern Sri Lanka is a place for adventure seekers, not for classic beach vacation.

Be prepared for close and intrusive attention from locals on the beaches. Tourists are a rarity here, and you may be stared at for a long time, people may try to take photos with you or make contact. This is a manifestation of friendly curiosity, not aggression, but you can forget about a calm, secluded rest on the beach. For relaxed sunbathing and swimming, this region is not yet suitable.

Extensive coastline does not at all mean kilometers of golden sand. Most of the coast of Jaffna and the north of the country is rocky, with steep descents into the water and strong currents. There are very few places where you can safely enter the water.

But to be honest, most of the shore looks like this

There are no beaches in Jaffna city itself - the shore here is occupied by the port and fishing villages. The few places where you can swim are located outside the city, the nearest is 15 kilometers away. Among them there are quite good and equipped places for a full beach vacation, but still tourists are not expected here yet.

Casuarina Beach is one of the best, but paid
Chaddy Beach is free, but with seaweed
Kankesanthurai Beach is not bad, but there are many locals here

You can get to the beaches from the center by rented transport, by hiring a tuk-tuk as a taxi (better through Grab or PickMe apps), or by coming to the bus station in the center and taking a bus to the desired beach. Buses run very often and are inexpensive. To find the right route, just tell any local or bus driver at the bus station where you need to go, and they will help you with everything.

Infrastructure in Jaffna

Jaffna is a very developed city by local standards, the largest in the north, and an ideal starting point for getting to know the region. There are many cafes, markets, shops, pharmacies, etc. here. There are several liquor stores, the closest to the center are on Hospital Rd and Jaffna-Kankesanturai Rd. Shopping malls in our understanding are absent here, but numerous shops and markets quite replace them. Also, good chain supermarkets Cargills Food City and local supermarkets with self-service shelves and payment by bank card work here, including accepting Russian UnionPay (verified). The city center, this is the area of the bus station and market, is always very bustling and noisy, trading is happening everywhere.

Jaffna center is saturated and lively
Brisk trade in dried seafood in shops
They sell fruits and everything else at the market

There are banks, ATMs, currency exchange. The exchange rate here is quite acceptable. For example, at one point in Colombo and at the airport it was 302 rupees per dollar, here they exchanged at 300 rupees. Considering that Colombo airport and Chatham Street commercial street in Colombo traditionally offer one of the best rates in the country, the difference is very small. But to get a good rate, you need to exchange at jewelry shops on Power House Road, also known as Clock Tower Road, near the bus station and market.

However, the tourist infrastructure itself is still poorly developed here. There are almost no travel agencies, very few restaurants for tourists, bars, rental transport is very limited. And tourist transport like transfers between resorts, to beaches and the like, is completely absent.

Finding where to eat in Jaffna can be found almost everywhere, especially in the center. In the market area and opposite the bus station there are several establishments under the signs "hotel" with ultra-cheap everyday food, where you can order a rice dish from 400 rupees (1.2 USD). Now chain restaurants BurgerKing and Dominos have also opened, you can eat here from 1000 rupees (3.01 USD). Many establishments with takeaway food with huge portions from 600 rupees (1.8 USD) work. In general, you can find a lot of options to eat inexpensively.

But to our great disappointment, we couldn't find normal establishments with seafood here. In some establishments we found fish, but it is cooked tastelessly, actually it's just over-dried fish in a fryer. This is very strange, considering that fishing is very active here, but perhaps they just don't focus on tourists yet and don't know how to cook well.

Now Burgerking works in Jaffna
Very inexpensive to eat in takeaway food establishments

Hotels in Jaffna and Where to Stay

There are no difficulties in finding a hotel or other accommodation in Jaffna. There are many options, prices are very low by Sri Lankan standards, although there are almost no comfortable hotels. In the city itself, budget accommodation is mainly represented in the form of mini-hotels, private guesthouses, and even rooms for rent in local residents' houses. There are also very budget options like hostels, but there are very few of them. And there is not much point in necessarily looking for cheap accommodation in a shared hostel room, since by paying a minimum amount you can get a separate room. More comfortable accommodation for vacation is located on the coast and islands in the area of the few beaches.

Such a budget room will cost from 10 dollars per person

We highly recommend choosing accommodation with air conditioning, since the heat here is very strong and does not subside even at night, sleeping in such conditions is simply unbearable.

You can find and book accommodation in Jaffna on the following sites, or using the search form. All search engines work in Russian, Russian-language support is present:

How to Get There

1st class train to Jaffna

Jaffna is located 400 kilometers from Colombo and the airport, and this is one of the most remote resorts in the country. However, despite the remoteness, getting here will not be difficult, since as of 2019 direct railway services from Colombo have been resumed, direct bus services from Colombo, Trincomalee, Anuradhapura and other cities in the northern part of the country are carried out. From other popular resorts and major cities of the island you can get there with a transfer in Colombo or through other cities. No matter where you start your route, you can get to Jaffna within one daylight hours, the main thing is to plan the route correctly.

  • From Russia and other countries. There are no international flights to Jaffna airport, and there are no composite ready routes by planes. So fly to Colombo and there transfer to domestic airlines, train, bus, taxi, rental transport.
  • From Colombo. You can fly by domestic airlines, but it's cheaper to go by taxi (in a group), train, buses. Everything runs frequently and quickly, costs little.
  • From Negombo. There are no direct train or bus services from Negombo, so go with a transfer via Colombo, Kurunegala, Anuradhapura, etc.
  • From southern and western resorts Hikkaduwa, Bentota, Unawatuna, Galle, Mirissa, etc. Only with a transfer via Colombo by train, bus. There are no direct services.
  • From Kandy. There are direct buses, or go to Anuradhapura or Vavuniya and there transfer to bus or train.
  • From Trincomalee. There is a direct bus service several times a day, or go by bus to Vavuniya or Anuradhapura, and there transfer to bus or train to Jaffna.
  • From Passekudah, Kalkudah. Go with a transfer via Trincomalee, and further as indicated above.
  • From Batticaloa. Go by bus to Anuradhapura, and there transfer to bus or train.

Bus service with Jaffna is quite well developed, but to get here from most popular resorts, you will have to make a transfer in Colombo or Anuradhapura. Another convenient city for transfer is Vavuniya (Vavuniya).

All buses to Jaffna arrive and depart from the bus station in the city center (bus station on map).

Trains from Colombo depart from Colombo Fort railway station several times a day, including a night one. You can check the schedule on the official Sri Lanka Railways website - https://eservices.railway.gov.lk/.

Transport in Jaffna and How to Get Around

Tuk-tuk in Jaffna

Jaffna is a small city, and you can get around its center on foot. You can walk to see the fort, visit the market and the main shopping street, get from the railway or bus station to the hotel. However, other interesting places and beaches are at a considerable distance from the center, and to visit them you will have to use transport.

The simplest and most convenient way to get around Jaffna is to use tuk-tuks as taxis. Regular car taxis are absent here. Tuk-tuks can be used for short trips around the city (from 200 rupees per trip), or hire them for a whole day for a trip to distant attractions or beaches (from 2000 rupees per day after bargaining). Tuk-tuks in Jaffna are not equipped with meters, so you need to agree on the cost of the trip before boarding, and you must bargain.

City private bus in Jaffna

If tuk-tuk rides are too expensive for you, then there is a system of city state and private buses. You can travel not only around the city on them, but also get to some distant beaches and attractions, and the fare is penny. Payment is made to the conductor, but don't forget to name the place you are going to, since the ticket price depends on the distance.

All buses start from the city bus station, so if you don't know which route you need and where to find it, just go to the bus station and ask the locals which bus you need, they will be happy to help you. Transport departs quite often, approximately every 30 minutes. The section on Jaffna attractions provides information on how to get to a particular place, including bus routes.

Motorcycles in Jaffna

But much more freedom of movement is provided by renting your own transport. In Jaffna you can rent a bicycle for about 500 rupees, although you will have to look for rental. Even better to rent a motorcycle (scooter). In Jaffna we managed to find only two rental places:

  • Rental SRI LANKA CLICK. Located at 447, Stanley Road. Motorcycle rental costs from 2500 rupees/day (7.52 USD), contract is concluded. Bicycle rental – 500 rupees. They don't ask for a passport as collateral, only take a photo of the passport and IDP. You can book a motorcycle on the website - http://www.srilankaclick.com/
  • Rental S.M.E. Shop and motorcycle rental on Hospital Street. They ask for 3500 rupees per day, since the scooters are new.

To drive rented transport in Sri Lanka, by law you fully need to apply for a local driver's license in Colombo based on your existing international license. But in practice, this is not necessary, since the police are usually lenient towards tourists driving if they do not grossly violate the rules. However, there is always a chance of getting a fine. Rental companies also check for an international driver's license with a category for driving a motorcycle, and in its absence they may well refuse you. See more about renting a motorcycle in Sri Lanka.

Attractions of Jaffna and the North, and What to See Here

It cannot be said that Jaffna and the north have the most interesting attractions in Sri Lanka, but there is something to see. It will be especially interesting here for those who love routes less traveled by tourists, since few people get to most interesting places in this part of the country, tourists are still very rare guests here.

The region has a history and culture different from the rest of the country, since for many centuries this territory has been home to Tamils, who predominantly practice Hinduism, and therefore most of the attractions here are different from the rest of Sri Lanka. Most temples here are, of course, Hindu, many historical attractions are associated with southern India, and some were left by the Portuguese and Dutch from the colonial period. There are also Buddhist temples, but there are few of them, and they are not particularly beautiful.

Nevertheless, there are many interesting, important and even intriguing attractions in Jaffna and the north in general, which we recommend to visit. Here is our TOP list from personal experience:
