General information about Dickwell

Dickwella (Dickwella, Dickwella, Dikwella) is a small town and resort in southern Sri Lanka (Dickwella on the map of Sri Lanka). Sometimes Dickwella refers to Tangalle Resort or even to Matara, but in fact it is an independent, albeit small, city and a full-fledged resort.

Dickwella is known for its beautiful beach, perfectly protected from waves, and it is for a quiet beach holiday that tourists come here. Tourism here is poorly developed, there are only basic conditions for recreation in the form of hotels and restaurants. There is no entertainment here, except for the beach, walks around the city and trips to excursions in the south or throughout the island. There is no separate tourist area with Entertainment and hotels, and rare hotels are scattered along the beach and in the depths of the village. There are not many restaurants and cafes in the coastal zone, but if you go out into the city, you can find good inexpensive cafes along the main road.

Dickwell

At the same time, the city of Dickwell itself is not such a remote and God-forsaken place. This is quite a busy shopping and fishing town, which has a large market, several banks and ATMs, a Cargills Food supermarket and several more supermarkets. There is even an alcohol store, which is not, for example, in Unawatuna. All city life is concentrated along the busy Tangalle Road which connects Matara and Tangale. But it is only necessary to walk a little from the road towards the beach, as all this noise and city bustle disappears and is forgotten, because the resort area here is very quiet and calm.

Dickwella Beaches

The main beach of Dickwella has a length of two kilometers. It is beautiful and at the same time very sparsely populated, located in a bay that, together with reefs and rocks, protects it from winds and waves. Therefore, this is one of the most "bathing" places in the south of the island, the second such place is Unawatuna. The biggest waves are in the center of the beach, and the least of them are in the western part (this is the part from Matara). There aren't many waves in the East either, but there are more rocks.

One kilometer to the east (towards Tangalle) there is still a tiny beach Hiriketiya. You can't get to it on the shore, there are too many stones, and on the road it is two kilometers away. This is just a paradise beach in the form of a Bay, deep into the land. There are no hotels and infrastructure on this beach.

Dickwella Beach

The influence of tides in Dickwell is little pronounced, they practically do not interfere with swimming and beach holidays. However, you may want to check the Dickwell tide chart before you travel/Mirissa, built with the help of a forecast based on more than 20 years of observations.

Hotels In Dickwella

There is no separate tourist area in Dickwell, and hotels are mostly scattered on the shore in different parts of the beach, and there are very few of them, literally one or two, and there are no more. A couple of hotels are located across the main Tangalle road from the beach. You should not expect to come here and just go look for a hotel on foot, it is better to at least prepare and look at the location of hotels on the map.

Budget hostels can not be found here, and those that are, offer prices at the level of average hotels. You should expect to pay for a room from $ 60 for two.

Find and book accommodation in Dickwell/Tangale can on these sites or through the search form. All sites have a Russian interface and Russian-language customer support, a lot of reviews from real guests.

How to get to Dickwella

Dickwella is 200 kilometers from Colombo International Airport (Bandaranaike). The nearest major transport hub is the city of Galle, and if you plan to get here by public transport from other cities in Sri Lanka, then you should aim to go to it and make a transfer there. From Colombo, Bentota, Hikkaduwa, Unawatuna and other resorts in the South, Dickwella can be reached directly by bus or train. If you need to get here from the mountainous region of Sri Lanka (Ella, Nuwara Eliya, Haputale, Badulla, etc.), it is better not to go through Colombo or Galle, but by bus with a transfer in Hambantota.

The only functioning International Airport in the country is Colombo Bandaranaike airport, and it is through this that you will arrive in Sri Lanka. There are direct flights and transfers from Moscow, St. Petersburg and the regions of the Russian Federation. But it is cheaper to get there by connecting flights with Turkish airlines, Air Arabia, Etihad Airways, Qatar Airways, Gulf Air.

Upon arrival at the airport, the only non-stop way to get to the resort is by taxi. The trip will cost about $ 80, in time more than 5 hours. You can reduce the time a little if you ask the driver to go on the Southern Express Toll Road.

A reasonable alternative to a taxi is a tourist bus. This is actually also a taxi, only ordered in advance via the Internet, and more comfortable. You can order at intui.travel or kiwitaxi.ru, and then the driver will meet you with a sign at the airport upon arrival of the flight.

If you want to save money, you can get to Dickwella and much cheaper by bus or train, but you have to spend 8-12 hours and make several transfers. There is nothing complicated in this route, but it is worth starting it only in the morning to have time to get there. If you arrive at the airport after lunch, you simply will not have time to get there before dark, and buses do not run at night. There are two options:

  • By bus

Changing buses takes place at the bus stations where you arrive, so the difficulty will arise only in order to find the right bus, which local residents or drivers can always help, you just need to correctly call them the right place.

So, to get from the airport to Dickwella, first you have to take a bus from the airport to the bus or railway station in Colombo (how to do this, in detail here). There you need to change to a bus to Tangale, Kataragama (Kataragama) or Hambantota (Hambantota). If you don't have one of these buses closest to you, take it to Matara, or at least Galle. In Matara or Galle, you will have to take the bus again, this time to Tangalle or Kataragama, and get off at Dickwell. In Dikvela, the bus stops at the bus station in the city center, but you can get off at the previous stop in the western part of the resort near the police station. Further to any hotel here is easy to reach on foot. Read more about buses in Sri Lanka and how to use them here...

  • By train

If you prefer the train, you can do part of the journey by train. To do this, as in the case of buses from the airport, you first need to get to the center of Colombo, where there is a bus and railway station. Next, there are three options:

    • Directly to Dickwella at Webrukannala station run about 6 trains daily. The station is two kilometers from the beach and the resort area (Dikwella railway station on the map), so upon arrival here it is fashionable to walk or take tuk-tuks.

    • If there is no nearest train to Webrukannala (not all trains reach it) then take to Matara. In Matara from the railway station you need to walk 5 minutes to the main road, and there at the bus stop take any passing bus towards Dickwella, go often during the day.

    • As a last resort, take the train to Galle, they run most often, at least 10 times a day. In Galle, the bus station is right next to the railway station and from there there are frequent buses towards Matara and Weligami.

You can check the train schedule here https://eservices.railway.gov.lk. The cost of the third class is 130 Rupees (0.39 USD, see currency of Sri Lanka and exchange rate), Second Class-230, first-420. you can buy a ticket in any class, but it is better to go to the second, since the third class is packed to the brim. In the first class, you probably will not buy tickets, because they are not on all trains, and usually sold out in advance. Learn more about how to use trains in Sri Lanka here...

Dickwell transport

Dickwella is a small town and it's easy to get around on foot. For trips to the neighboring cities, Matara and Tangalle, you can use buses that constantly run along the main road Tangalle road.

We did not find rental offices for motorbikes and cars here, but you can try to find motorbikes through hotels or hostels. For a day of renting a simple scooter, they ask for at least $ 10, which is very expensive by Sri Lankan standards. See more about how to rent a scooter in Sri Lanka here...

Dickwella Attractions

There are no interesting places in the resort area of Dickwella, but there are several attractions worth visiting nearby. If you can not imagine a holiday without excursions at all, then you should pay attention to the sights of the whole south, or go on a trip to the center in the Cultural Triangle. Unfortunately, it is impossible to find inexpensive group tours in travel agencies in Dickwell (they simply do not exist here), and therefore you will have to plan routes yourself, hiring a personal guide with transport or renting Transport for an independent trip. By the way, finding Transport for rent in Dickwell is not a trivial task.

One of the most interesting places near Dickwella isWewurukannala temple. This is a place worth visiting not only from Dickwella, but from any other resort in the South. Here is the largest statue of the sitting Buddha in Sri Lanka (height-50 meters). But not this temple is remarkable for tourists, but the corridor that leads to the rise of the statue. In this corridor, horrifying pictures of the punishments of sinners are presented. Read more about Wewurukannala temple and photos here.

6 kilometers east of the city (towards Tangale, see fig. on the map) there is another famous place – "Howling hole" (Ho-o-maniya Blowhole). This is a rocky place on the shore, which was formed in such a way that when the wind blows in a certain direction, and the waves break with force on the rock, some of the water falls into the crevice between the stones, and under great pressure shoots a huge fountain to a height of 20 meters. To see this spectacle, you need to wait until the right wind and waves are formed. Unfortunately, the spectacular spectacle can not always be seen: the best time is the monsoon season (from May to September), especially June. There is a fee of Rs 200 to access the rock (0.6 USD).

Another interesting place is relatively close - lighthouse and Cape Dondra. It is the southernmost point of Sri Lanka and a very picturesque place. Not to mention Mulkirigala, attractions of Matara, Galle Town and Fort, turtle hatchery near Unawatuna, and Yala National Park. All these places can be visited from Dickwella by rented transport or buses along the main road.
