General information about Mirissa
Mirissa is a small town and beach resort area in southern Sri Lanka on the Indian Ocean (Mirissa on the map of Sri Lanka). Mirissa was formed first as a purely tourist resort area, and only then there was a modest urban infrastructure. There are almost no houses of local residents here, everything is focused only on tourism. In addition to tourism, the village lives on fishing, most of which, again, is focused on guests of the resort.
The first tourist hotel appeared here in 1980, and the place turned out to be so successful that in the 90s it began to develop rapidly, and today it has become one of the most attractive beach resorts in the South. They come here for excellent beaches, quiet rest, solitude and doing nothing. If you compare Mirissa with the other two most popular resorts in the south - Unavautnoy and Hikkaduwa, it is much quieter here. Compared to them, Mirissa is a real wilderness, but this is the main "feature" of the resort.
But there is a reason why tourists flock to Mirissa – these are blue whales. The fact is that these sea giants come here for the winter, and in order to show them to tourists, business is well established with excursions to the ocean to blue whales.
Tourist infrastructure is available here, but there is only the most necessary. For serious purchases, you need to go to Colombo, Matara, Galle, or at least to the neighboring Veligama resort, where there is a conditional Shopping Center Weligama Shopping Complex. In Mirissa itself, along the main road, there are a lot of small shops where you can buy basic necessities, food, souvenirs. And recently a good supermarket Cargills Food City opened here. It sells products and semi-finished products, ready meals, and go here for alcohol.
Find places where to eat tasty or inexpensive, will not be a problem. If you want delicious, with views of the ocean and a romantic atmosphere, then see the menu in one of the cafes on the shore. You can eat in them from 1800 rupees for two with drinks (6.65 USD, see Sri Lankan currency and exchange rate). If you need cheaper, then move towards the main road, and you will find many inexpensive places where hearty rice with chicken costs from 200 rupees (0.6 USD). Well, if you want to eat inexpensively and tasty, go to Cargills Food City, which sells semi-finished and ready meals that can be heated right here, or in your hotel or guest house.
Excursions for whale watching and in general to all corners of the country, including to the sights of the Cultural Triangle of Sri Lanka, can be easily bought at street travel agencies and hotels.
There is no bank, ATM and currency exchange offices in the resort area on the beaches, but it is enough to go to the main road, as you will find several ATMs of different banks. Towards Weligama there is a Commercial Bank, and in Matara Sampath Bank and Commercial Bank, one can exchange currency there. As for the exchange of currency directly in Mirissa, you can find where to change dollars or euros, but the rate will be unprofitable. Better for a good course go to Weligama, Galle, and even better change the amount you need for a holiday in Colombo or at the airport.

Entertainment in Mirissa is the minimum, and, frankly, most tourists here get bored after a week of rest. The main local entertainment is, of course, the beaches. They are simply wonderful, and almost worthy of the title of "bounty". True, the main beach is subject to strong waves, but if you go a little east (towards Matara), then there are a couple of bays with very calm water. The presence of waves in the main Bay is successfully used by surfers, and this is one of their favorite places. And next door is Weligama Beach – the best place in the south for surfing. In the eastern part of the beach, where the waves do not interfere, you can do a little snorkeling, although sophisticated and experienced lovers of swimming with a mask here will not be surprised. For all these classes there is a rental of boards (1000 rupees per day, approximately 3.02 USD), snorkeling equipment.
A special entertainment, thanks to which Mirissa is visited even by tourists vacationing at other resorts – boat trips to blue whales. Local waters are the wintering place of these giants, and therefore they can often be seen here.
There is little to do in Mirissa in the evening. There are no discos and noisy bars here, the area falls asleep very early, and after 9 pm all cafes close. The only exception is Friday evening, when a noisy party takes place on the beach until midnight. By the way, in the evening on weekdays on the beach there are many cafes where you can dine with freshly caught seafood in a romantic atmosphere overlooking the ocean. This is probably the only weekday evening entertainment in Mirissa.
Weather in Mirissa, seasons, when to go
Mirissa is a year-round resort, it is always warm here. But the high and low tourist seasons stand out:
High season falls between November and April. At this time there is almost no precipitation and no strong waves. In addition, this is the wintering season of whales, and it is at this time that the greatest chances of seeing them during special excursions.

Mirissa beach
Mirissa beach is one of the most beautiful in Sri Lanka. The length of the beach is small, a little less than a kilometer, but together with the neighboring beaches it turns out to be quite long, and lovers of long walks along the coast should like it here.
The main beach is located in the Bay, which, however, does not protect it from winds and waves, and the conditions for swimming here are not the best. Sometimes the waves just knock you down, and this is not only in the low season, so mostly surfers spend time here.
Fortunately, to the east of the main beach towards Matara there are two more bays framed by beautiful sandy beaches, and there the waves are much smaller. If the main beach does not suit you because of the waves, you can walk to these bays. In addition to comfortable swimming, you can swim with a mask. The border between these beaches and the main beach is formed by a sandbar with a small island just a few dozen from the shore (called Parrot Rock), and it can be reached on foot along the shallows. In the evening, many tourists gather on the island to meet the sunset there. It is said that here it is one of the most beautiful in Sri Lanka.
What is good, the influence of tides in Mirissa is little pronounced, they almost do not interfere with beach holidays. The calculation of tides in Mirissa is carried out by complex mathematical methods and on the basis of collected statistical data.
Hotels In Mirissa
Hotels in Mirissa are recommended to book in advance, as often everything is busy, because this is one of the most popular resorts in Sri Lanka. Prices here are slightly higher than in other resorts. In high season, a guest with almost no amenities can be found from 2200 rupees, and for normal accommodation with a fan you will have to pay from 3000.
A feature of local hotels and gests is that they have almost no hot water. For accommodation with hot water will have to pay almost one and a half times more expensive than for similar accommodation without hot water. Air conditioners are also a rarity, mostly in-Room fans. By the way, it is not a fact that if there is an air conditioner, it will cool. Be sure to check his work before settling in. TVs are also not everywhere, but there are still no normal channels. Wi-fi is also a rarity, and it works disgustingly slow.
Upon arrival in the city at the bus station, tourists are caught by tuk-tukers and offer their help in finding "the best and most inexpensive hotels". Do not rush to use their services. First, find a hotel on the spot, if you did not book in advance, you can also walk here, because everything is very compact. And secondly, Tookers often breed our brother for money: first they will ask for 200 rupees for help in finding a hotel, then they take you for a long time to cheap and disproportionately expensive hotels, which you will certainly refuse, and at the end of the trip they will demand 10 times more, because they will say that they drove you too much because you refused hotels. But it is better to book a hotel in advance.

From the airport to the resort it is most convenient to get by taxi and with the help of a pre-ordered tourist transfer. A taxi ride will cost about $ 60, in time more than 3 hours. The car will be offered to you immediately at the entrance to the arrivals hall after receiving your luggage, or you can contact the counter yourself. And by the way, you can bargain or ask to find a travel companion for you to share the cost.
Another option is to book a tourist transfer in advance, which can be done through the sites intui.travel or kiwitaxi.ru. Both sites have a Russian-language interface and support in Russian. After ordering a transfer on the sites, the driver will meet you with a sign on arrival.
If a taxi is too expensive, then you can get there very inexpensively by bus or train. In this case, the trip will cost you no more than 300 rupees, however, you will have to go with transfers, and it will take half a day. First from the airport you will need to take a bus to the bus station in Colombo (for details on how to do this, see here). There you will need to take a bus to Matara (No. 2), and he will drop you off in Mirissa (tell the conductor where you need, and he will drop you off at the right stop). To find this bus at the station, the easiest way is to ask for help from local or bus drivers, and they will point you to the right one. Alternatively, you can take a bus to Galle, and change there to another bus to Matara. If you are going in the opposite direction from Mirissa to Galle or Colombo, then it makes sense to first drive in the opposite direction to Matara to avoid the crush in the buses. If you decide to go by train, then just like with the bus, you must first take the bus from the airport to Colombo railway station, and then take the train to Mirissa railway station (but the station is far from the district itself), or to Weligama or Matara, and from there take the bus again. The last two options are more convenient besides, more trains stop at these stations, especially in Matara, since this is the final station. From the railway stations to the buses there is easy to reach on foot.
Train schedules can be found at https://eservices.railway.gov.lk. Read more about Sri Lankan trains and how to travel here...
Well, another way to get here is by plane through Koggala airport. This airport is located in the south of the city Koggala, and is served by light aircraft and helicopters from Colombo airport by Cinnamon Air and Millennium Airlines (aka Simply), from Colombo-Ratmalana airport to FitsAir and again Millennium Airlines. The cost of a one-way flight - from $ 230.
Transport in Mirissa
To move around Mirissa, no transport is needed, the area is very small, everything can be bypassed on foot. You can get to the neighboring towns of Matara or Weligama for shopping or for a walk by bus.
There is rent of motorbikes from 2200 rupees/day (6.65 see more all about renting motorcycles in Sri Lanka here.... You can find a car with a driver for rent through hotels.
Mirissa Attractions
There are practically no attractions in Mirissa. There are only a couple of temples Kandavahari Temple and Sri Sunandarama Temple, and whale watching tours.
If you want to see something interesting, then you should pay attention to the sights of the entire south of Sri Lanka, and perhaps go to the center of the island in Cultural Triangle. Ideal for exploring these places is a rented vehicle-a motorcycle or a car with a driver. The closest places can be reached by bus.
See also the options available for booking online tours of Sri Lanka on one of the trusted sites:
Not far to the east of Mirissa is Matara, where there is an old Fort Museum and Temple on the island (see about Matara and its attractions here...). You can get to Matara by bus. If you drive a little further east, you can get to the southernmost point of the island - Dondra, where there is a very picturesque lighthouse. Also to the East is the cave temple Mulgirigala and the Yala National Park.
To the West is the city of Galle and the fort, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Still relatively nearby is Sinharaja Forest National Park. In the village of Habbaraduwa (Habbaraduwa) near the resort of Unawatuna is a worthy visit turtle farm.
Blue Whale Watching Tour
If we talk specifically about Mirissa, then there is the only attraction worthy of attention – blue whales. The fact is that the local waters are a haven for these animals for the winter, and from here from the pier there are daily excursions to see blue whales and dolphins. This is a very exciting sight, and here on this tour rush from all the resorts of Sri Lanka.
To see whales, it is enough to buy a tour at the hotel or at the agency on the street from 10000 rupees. What is good, for children under 13 years of age payment is 50%, and for children under 6 years of age you do not need to pay anything at all. If you want to save money, you can walk yourself to the pier (it is located between Mirissa and Veligama) and buy a ticket there directly on the ship. The minimum known price of the tour when buying at the pier is 4000 rupees, but maybe you will find it cheaper.
Tours start early in the morning (from 7 o'clock) and last from 4 to 7 hours, depending on the availability of whales. Some operators offer a free second tour if you don't see any whales on the first day. And some even return the money in this case. Here are a couple of well-known operators: http://www.whale-watching-mirissa.com/, http://www.rajaandthewhales.com/
As for the season, the best season to see whales is from December to April. It is at this time that there are a lot of whales, and they can be seen from a really close distance. In the low season, tours also do not stop, but the chances of seeing whales at close range are very small.
And yet, keep in mind that swimming on a small boat for 7 hours is not a pleasant occupation. Stock up on motion sickness, and try not to climb on the upper deck if you are very susceptible to motion sickness. And yet, to shoot whales you need the latest long-focus lens, and on a phone or a compact camera you will not get good pictures.
