Holidays in Marawila and why go here

On the beach in Marawila

Marawila is a small and quiet resort town on the west coast of Sri Lanka, located about 50 kilometers north of Colombo and further beyond Negombo (Marawila on the map). It stretches along the main coastal road and is famous for its long sandy beach. Unlike popular resorts like Bentota or Hikkaduwa, Marawila has retained its authentic character. This is a place where you can see real Sri Lankan life, not just tourist infrastructure.

The main reason to come to Marawila is the desire to relax quietly on the beach without the hustle and crowds of tourists. There is a relaxing village atmosphere here, suitable for family holidays or for those tired of noisy resorts. The beach here is wide and spacious, so even in season you can easily find a secluded spot.

But be very careful when choosing a hotel location!!! The fact is that in some places the shore here is reinforced with large boulders that will interfere with beach relaxation and swimming. Also, there are very littered areas due to the proximity of fishing farms. So if a clean sandy beach is important to you, be sure to read reviews on hotel booking systems or on Google maps about your hotel.

The beach in Marawila can be like this in the wrong place

Marawila itself is not only a resort but also a typical noisy and bustling city. But what's convenient is that the conditional resort area here is separated from the city: hotels and the tourist zone along the shore, and the city part is concentrated along the main street, passing one and a half to two kilometers parallel to the shore. On one hand, this is good because it's quiet near the beaches. But, on the other hand, there is nothing in this resort area except hotels and rare restaurants, the atmosphere is like in a typical Sri Lankan village.

However, the beach in Marawila is its main advantage for relaxation. This is a very long and wide strip of golden sand. However, the sea here is often wavy, which may please those who like to jump on them, but for small children you should be more careful. Swimming is quite comfortable, but we wouldn't call the sea here calm and safe, so watch children carefully and be careful yourself.

If you're looking for entertainment, Marawila is not the best place. There are no diving centers, noisy bars and discos here. The main activities are swimming, sunbathing, leisurely walks and observing local life.

Unfortunately, Marawila cannot boast of attractions, there simply aren't any here. But you can go on your own or with excursions to other places in Sri Lanka within one or several days, but we'll talk about this in more detail below in the section "What to see in Marawila".

Infrastructure in Marawila

Marawila's infrastructure is developed enough for a quiet holiday, but without frills. The main hotels and guesthouses are located along the beach or on the first line from the sea. Small family hotels predominate here, which adds coziness, but don't expect them to have the level of 5-star chain resorts.

There are no problems with food either, although the choice of establishments is much smaller than in major tourist centers such as Negombo, Hikkaduwa, Unawatuna, Trincomalee. Right on the seashore there are several simple restaurants that prepare fresh seafood - fish, squid, shrimp. Prices in them are democratic, especially compared to resorts on the south coast. There are also establishments oriented towards foreigners with menus in English, but prices there are almost twice as high. Here are food prices for reference and planning your holiday budget:

  • Eat in a cafe for locals without seafood with a simple everyday rice-based dish – from 800 rupees/person / 2.4 USD.
  • Eat in a cafe or restaurant for tourists without seafood with a simple everyday rice-based dish – from 1200 rupees/person / 3.6 USD.
  • Eat in a cafe or restaurant for tourists with simple seafood – from 2000 rupees/person / 6 USD.
  • Beer in a cafe – from 900 rupees / 2.7 USD.

But what's great is that portions in Sri Lanka are traditionally very large, so you can safely order one portion for two to start with, and then order more if you feel you haven't had enough. Well, if you really want to eat budget-friendly and local food, it's better to go from the resort area to the center of Marawila. There along the main road there are many establishments where locals eat. There you can eat authentic and very tasty rice with curry for even 400 rupees (1.2 USD).

As for shops, you'll find everything you need here, but only not in the resort area. Along the main road there are many small shops and several supermarkets (for example, "Keells Super") where you can buy water, snacks, fruits and essentials. There are also at least three alcohol shops here, and another one on Beach Road near the beach. For major shopping or souvenir purchases, it's better to go to Negombo or Colombo.

There are no problems with ATMs and currency exchange. ATMs are available from several major banks (Commercial Bank, HNB, BOC) and they work reliably including with UnionPay cards from Russian banks. You can exchange money in some jewelry stores or bank branches again on the main street. But still, we recommend exchanging money immediately at Colombo airport upon arrival, the rate there is very decent.

There are no motorbike or car rentals in Marawila. If you want to travel long distances during your holiday, you'll have to hire a tuk-tuk or a car with a driver here. The nearest rentals are in Negombo, where you can rent a motorcycle, tuk-tuk, and car for self-driving.

Hotels in Marawila and where to stay

In Marawila you can find an inexpensive room in guest houses, stay in a "resort" with its own territory on the first line, and even rent a whole house or part of it. All this is available in Russian and international booking systems, the list of such systems is below. Prices by Sri Lankan standards are very low, especially for budget options like guest houses or hostels:

Weather in Marawila, when is the best time to go

The climate on the west coast of Sri Lanka, where Marawila is located, is divided into two clear seasons: dry and rainy. When planning a trip, it's important to consider this so that the holiday is not spoiled by bad weather.

  • 🌞 High season (dry season) lasts from December to March and from June to September. This is the ideal time for a holiday in Marawila. The weather during this period is sunny, the sea is calm, rains are rare and short-lived. The air temperature during the day is +30...+32°C, the water in the ocean warms up to +28...+29°C. The peak of the season and, accordingly, the largest number of tourists falls in December and January.

  • ☔ Low season (rainy season) comes with the arrival of the southwest monsoon and occurs in April and May, and in October and November. At this time, it often rains in Marawila, sometimes prolonged, the sea becomes rough with strong waves. We would not recommend coming here during this period for a beach holiday, as there is a high risk of spending most of the vacation in the rain.

However, it's worth keeping in mind that even in the low season the weather can bring pleasant surprises. Sometimes there are weeks without precipitation, and rains occur only at night or early in the morning. But it's still not worth counting on this when planning a trip.

How and what to get to Marawila

The easiest way to get to Marawila is on a tour with included transfer. Then upon arrival you will be met by a tour operator representative and delivered to the hotel door. However, recently tours without included transfer or with individual transfer for an additional fee when purchasing a tour have been offered, since this destination is not mass. You can add such a transfer to the tour, and this will be the most convenient option. But if you want to save money or are traveling independently, you can save a lot on this stage of the holiday. Now we'll tell you in more detail:

  • ✈ To Marawila by plane

Sri Lanka has only two international airports. The main and nearest one is Colombo Bandaranaike Airport. It is located only 30 kilometers from Marawila and less than an hour's drive away. It is to Colombo airport that almost all international flights arrive, and we recommend considering it as the main entry point.

You can buy tickets to Colombo airport on reliable search engines Aviasales or Trip.com, or through this built-in search form from Aviasales:

From Colombo airport to the hotel in Marawila, the most convenient way is to take a taxi. You can use the official taxi offers at the counters in the arrival hall or drivers in the airport parking lot. But usually a trip through PickMe or Uber apps will be cheaper. To order, you can buy a local SIM card right at the airport or use free airport WiFi. How to buy a local SIM card at the airport and how much it costs is described here.

    Taxi cost to Marawila:

    • By tuk-tuk – from 2,500 rupees / 7.5 USD.
    • By car taxi – from 3,200 rupees / 9.6 USD.

If you're used to planning everything in advance and prefer comfort, you can book a tourist transfer online on websites Kiwitaxi.ru or Intui.travel. Then the driver will meet you at the airport upon arrival with a sign and deliver you to your holiday destination without unnecessary questions:

If you want to get from the airport very budget-friendly, you can use buses or trains. There are no direct routes from the airport, but you can make a transfer in Negombo. In turn, to the bus station or railway station in Negombo from the airport, it's easy to get by taxi from 600 rupees or on local buses for several tens of rupees.

The other international airport is Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport (code for checking in ticket HRI). It is located almost on the other side of the country in the south near the city of Hambantota. Only rare charter flights operate to it, including on tours from Russia.

From Mattala Rajapaksa to Marawila is almost 300 kilometers. By taxi it takes almost 6 hours, on local transport it will take almost the whole day with transfers. Taxi cost to Marawila:

    • By tuk-tuk – from 26,000 rupees / 78.01 USD.
    • By car taxi – from 31,000 rupees / 93.01 USD.

If you decide to travel by local transport, you'll have to make several transfers. First you need to take a taxi to the bus station in Hambantota. From there, take any bus in the direction of Galle, Matara, Colombo. It's best to take a bus that runs on the Expressway highway. To get to Colombo, you may have to make several transfers. In Colombo in the Colombo Fort area you can take a train or bus to Marawila. The railway station and bus station in Colombo are within walking distance of each other, but you can read more about this here.

  • 🚆 By train

A railway branch leads to Marawila from Colombo to Puttalam, it's a dead end. You can get to Marawila by it only from Colombo, Negombo, Puttalam and Chilaw. Accordingly, if you want to get here by train from other places, you need to make a transfer. It's best to transfer in Colombo, as it's a hub station, and you can get here from Kandy, Ella, Nuwara Eliya, Trincomalee, Galle, Hikkaduwa and other cities. And there's no point in going to Negombo or further, since you'll still get on the same train as in Colombo.

Trains on the Colombo-Marawila route are only commuter trains, something like our electric trains, only on diesel traction. There are only seated 3rd class carriages without reserved seats. Tickets are purchased immediately before departure, not sold in advance. Trains on this route are not overcrowded, so you'll easily find a free seat.

Tickets need to be bought to the station called Nattandiya, although if you say "Marawila" at the ticket offices, they will sell you tickets to this station. Trains run from Colombo at least 8 times a day, the journey takes about 4 hours. Price from 160 rupees. You can check the schedule on the official railway website here - https://eservices.railway.gov.lk/.

From Nattandiya station to Marawila is 7 kilometers. A tuk-tuk ride will cost from 300 rupees. It's not easy to find a car taxi here.

  • 🚌 By bus

Bus service in Sri Lanka is simply excellent. True, the buses leave much to be desired, they are often overcrowded, but they are very cheap.

Within one daylight day you can get from any point in the country to any other, including to Marawila. Most often, flights here are operated from Negombo and Colombo, so plan your trip from other places with a transfer here. Possibly there are other direct flights, but they don't run often.

In general, when traveling by bus in Sri Lanka, it's enough to follow a simple algorithm that we've tested on our own experience dozens of times: come early in the morning to the nearest bus station to you, and there ask drivers or helpers how to get to the desired city. They will tell you transfers along the route and the right bus to get there faster. This will be much easier than looking for routes in advance, since reliable information about them cannot be found on the internet.

As for specific popular routes with transfers, here is the information:

    • From Trincomalee, Anuradhapura – go with transfer via Puttalam.
    • From Kandy – go with transfer via Negombo.
    • All other directions – go with transfer in Colombo.

What to see in Marawila, attractions

Unfortunately, there are no attractions in Marawila itself at all. None!!! There are three Catholic churches, several Buddhist and Hindu ones here. But they are not remarkable in any way, so there's nothing even to tell about them.

If you can't imagine a holiday without trips to interesting places, in Marawila you'll have to splurge on expensive individual excursions or go on a trip on your own. Unfortunately, travel agencies with inexpensive group excursions cannot be found, so you'll have to arrange individual trips by car or tuk-tuk.

Here are the most interesting places that can be visited from Marawila within one day:

  • Munneswaram Temple – ancient Hindu temple
  • Anuradhapura – ancient city and first capital of the state with a large archaeological park
  • Polonnaruwa – ancient city and second capital of the state with an archaeological park
  • Sigiriya – one of the iconic attractions of Sri Lanka, ancient city of the 5th century AD on an impregnable rock.
  • Dambulla – ancient cave temple, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1991.

Also from Marawila you can go by train or bus to Negombo or Colombo within one day to get acquainted with their city attractions.

But the listed locations do not exhaust the interesting places visited from Marawila. There are still many places in Sri Lanka that can and should be visited. You can get acquainted with them in our guide, and it's better to start with this map with resorts and attractions.
