General information about Galle, recreation

Galle is a major city and port in southern Sri Lanka, the capital of the southern province and a popular tourist destination. Galle is about 145 kilometers from Colombo International Airport and 115 from Colombo city, near the popular resort of Unawatuna (Galle on the map of Sri Lanka). It is the fourth most populous city in Sri Lanka, with nearly 100,000 people.

The name of the city is pronounced as a cross between "Gal" and "Gal", and also "Gol". The pronunciation of "Galle" you will not hear. So do not be surprised if you do not understand when you call the city that way. Nevertheless, in the Russian language, this spelling and pronunciation of the name of the city has been fixed, and we will adhere to it.

Galle is, first of all, an excursion place, and not a beach resort. The city is located on the coast, and it even has its own city beach, but it can not be considered as a place for a beach holiday. The view of the local beach can only make you sad, so for a beach holiday you should go to the neighboring Unawatuna, the nearby resort of Hikkaduwa or other beaches of the South.

As for excursions and historical attractions, in this matter Galle has no equal on the south coast of Sri Lanka. The highlight of the city is the ancient fort, the construction of which was completed by the Dutch in 1663. In 1988, the fort was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, and today is one of six historic UNESCO sites in Sri Lanka. The other five of them are located in the center of the country in the Cultural Triangle of Sri Lanka. Inside the fort there are architectural attractions, museums, a lighthouse and much more. But the sights of the city are not limited only to the fort: there are several more temples, a Catholic Church, and a lot of ancient architecture in the form of buildings in the European style.

Local youth

As a rule, Galle is visited in the form of a day excursion from the southern resorts. But in the city you can stay for a few days, all the conditions here are for this. The atmosphere of the city is very pleasant and suitable for leisurely walks to explore the sights and architecture. In the tourist area inside the fort, where the Old Town was formed, you can walk for hours, and when you get tired, you can sit in one of the many cafes. Also interesting are the local market and the fishing beach, where you can watch how fish are caught with nets directly from the ocean, and immediately sold. But in no case should you consider Galle as a place for the period of your entire vacation. There are no beaches here. There is no Entertainment other than walking around the fort, and after a couple of days it becomes very boring.

Infrastructure in Galle

Galle is the most developed city in the south, and therefore it is constantly visited by tourists from the southern beaches to buy necessary things that are not found in the resorts; exchange money in the bank; find a pharmacy or seek medical help. Galle is also a major transport hub: there is a bus station here, and all buses from Colombo to the southern resorts make a stop here; a branch line of the Colombo Southern Railway passes through the city - Matara. And there are buses from Kuduvela on the expressway, which allows you to quickly get from the resorts of the central mountainous part of the country (Nuwara Eliya, Ella, Kandy, etc.) to the beach resorts of the south-west bypassing Colombo.

The tourist infrastructure here is also quite developed, there is a tourist area inside the Fort. There are also many cafes and restaurants, travel agencies, and, as already mentioned, almost all the attractions.

Hotels and beaches in Galle

As we have already mentioned, it is absolutely not worth considering Galle as a place for a beach holiday. The beach within the city limits is terrible, although locals swim here. The nearest good beaches are in Unawatuna (10-20 minutes by bus, see beaches of Unawatuna), or north towards Hikkaduwa. Do not believe the sources on the Internet that claim that Galle has wonderful beaches and many water activities, this is not so.

There are enough hotels in the city, but there is almost no budget accommodation. The bulk of the hotels are located inside the fort, which is a kind of tourist area. Although there are several hotels outside the fort, we highly recommend staying within its walls.

You can find and book accommodation in Galle on these sites or through the search form. All sites have a Russian interface and Russian-language customer support, a lot of reviews from real guests.

Upon arrival at the airport, it is easiest and fastest to get here by taxi or tuk-tuk. The trip takes from 3 hours and costs about $ 50. You can find a car at the airport counter, you can order a taxi online through Uber or PickMe applications, which will cost even a little cheaper, or order a transfer through the search form below or on the website Intui.travel. If you order a transfer, the driver will meet you at the airport upon arrival with a sign.

Cheaper to get if you use public transport. You have to spend a little more time, but you can save decently.

You can choose to get from the airport to Galle by bus or by train, both options with a transfer. First you need to get from the airport to Colombo to the bus or railway station in Pettah (Pettah). The cheapest way to do this is by bus number 187. The final destination of this bus is Colombo Fort Railway Station, and in front of it it makes a stop at Colombo bus station. Learn more about how to get from Colombo airport here....

Further to Galle you can continue by bus or train. We recommend taking the bus, because they go more often. When you get off at the bus station, you need to find a direct bus to Galle, no more transfers will have to do. There is a bus number 2 and many other flights pass through it. It is easier to ask for help from local or drivers, and you will be taken to the right bus. Flights depart very often, so you do not have to wait long. Moreover, you can choose the cheapest bus without air conditioning, or more expensive, but with air conditioning. The fare is about 200 rupees (0.6 USD, see the exchange rate of rupees and the currency of Sri Lanka), the journey is about 3 hours. Small buses with air conditioning go faster, cost from 295 rupees.

If you prefer the train, you can take one of the 10 daily trains. The fare depends on the class of the car and is: 3rd Class-100 rupees; 2nd – 180; 1st-340. We recommend using the second class, because the trip in the third during rush hours resembles the subway during rush hour, and the first class for such a short distance is simply not needed. Drive 3 and a half hours. You do not need to buy tickets in advance, just come to the station, find the ticket office and buy a ticket for the nearest train. Information about train schedules can be found at https://eservices.railway.gov.lk.

Railway station

Bus and train stations in Galle are within walking distance of each other and almost in the heart of the city. The tourist area inside the fort is easily accessible on foot in 5 minutes. Special air-conditioned express buses from Colombo arrive and depart from the car park just across the road from the bus station.

Bus station

From other resorts in the south and southwest of Sri Lanka (Unawatuna, Hikkaduwa, Bentota, Koggale, Mirissa etc.) are easily accessible by the same bus number 2 or by train. From Tangalle and Dickwella also has a direct bus, but it does not run often, so it is advisable to first take the bus to Matara, and then change to the train or bus to Galle. From all these places it is quite possible to get to Galle, walk and see the sights there, and come back the same day.

From other districts of Colombo bus # 2 to Galle can be taken at almost any bus stop along Galle Road (aka route A2). Mount Lavinia Beach area of Colombo can also be reached by train from the railway station of the same name.

From other cities in Sri Lanka by public transport, it is best to get to Galle via Colombo, where you can change to bus number 2 or train similar to the route from the airport.

However, now there is a faster way to get to Galle bypassing Colombo. It's a bit more expensive, but you'll save nearly an hour of time you'll lose in Colombo in traffic. To do this, from the cities of the mountainous part of Sri Lanka (Nuwara Eliya, Ella, Adam's peak, Kandy, etc.) you need to take a bus to Colombo, but get off earlier at the bus station in Kaduwela (Kaduwela). From there, a bus leaves every 20-30 minutes during the day on the expressway for 460 rupees (1.39 USD) in 30-40 minutes you will be in Galle, while with a transfer through Colombo you will spend at least 3 hours.

And here is the timetable of trains and other transport in Galle available for online booking:

Sorry, no timetable now. Try later ☹

Transportation in Galle

Public transport in the city is represented in the form of buses. They run along the main streets of the city, but the main interest for tourists can only be buses traveling along the coast on the roads Galle road and Colombo-Road. These buses provide easy access to Unawatuna (10-20 minutes and 40 rupees) and other nearby Coast towns.

To move around the city center, transport is not needed at all, everything is very close and compact, you can get around on foot. In the center there are many tuk-tuks that offer their services as a taxi for walking around the city and around the fort, and almost all tuk-tuk drivers try to breed tourists for money under the pretext that the fort is closed (the fort is never closed, because it is part of the city and its district). They offer tourists a ride instead of the fort to interesting places, but in fact they will take you to a spice shop or something else at inflated prices.

Transport for rent (motorbikes) in Galle we could not find. The nearest place to rent a motorbike is Unawatuna.

Galle Attractions

The main attraction of Galle is the old Dutch fort, which includes a number of other attractions and museums.

There are no other significant attractions outside the Fort. You can also see the Church of St. Mary, the Old Market, a new temple under construction and a fishing beach. But if you don't have much time, then these places are not worth attention, and you can safely skip them.

  • Galle Fort

Galle Fort / View photos in 3D

Galle Fort is one of the five historical sites of Sri Lanka included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Therefore, this is just a must-visit place, especially if you are vacationing on the Southern Beaches. It is the largest fortress in Asia built by Europeans.

The original fortress on this site was built by the Portuguese in 1588. However, with the arrival of the Dutch here in the 17th century, the fortress was almost completely rebuilt, and therefore today it is considered a Dutch fortress, and the date of its foundation is considered to be 1663 (the date of completion of construction). For almost 200 years after that, the fortress was the main port of Sri Lanka, it served as a stopping place for ships en route from Europe to Asia.

Today, the fort is an entire urban area called the Old Town. In fact, within the fort is also the tourist area of Galle. Learn more about Galle Fort and photos here...

    St. Mary's Church

St. Mary's church was built by the local Jesuit community in 1874. This is a very beautiful, clean and well maintained Church, located on a hill near the city center (bus station). In principle, there is not much to do here, except to look inside and look at photos of the church at the time of its opening in 1874, tablets with a chronology of the pastors of the church.

    🕐 Working hours: during daytime.

  • Old Green Market

    Galle old market

The Old Market building was built in 1880, as proudly evidenced by the numbers at the entrance. It is a small market where locals sell their goods, mostly vegetables and fruits. You will not see any souvenirs and goods for tourists here, and the market does not have a unique architecture. But there is something here... time here is frozen as if the moment the market was built. The whole market is so authentic that sellers still use vintage weights for scales to weigh goods on bowls. And they say that only the descendants of merchants who traded here since the opening of the market work in the market. Trading places in the market are passed down from generation to generation and no strangers are allowed here.

    🕐 Working hours: during daytime.

🚶 How to get there: the Old Market is located within walking distance from the city center (from the bus station) among the rows and shops of the City Market (see the market on the map).

💵 Entrance fee / tickets price: free.

  • Rybatskaya embankment

    Galle fishing promenade

Right within the city, towards Unawatuna, there is a promenade with a beach where fishermen directly from the ocean with large nets pull ashore a rich catch. Everything that is caught is sold here to local residents.

    🕐 Working hours: during daytime.

🚶 How to get there: fisherman's Quay is not very far from the center of Galle, you can get there on foot in 20 minutes (see the market on the map).
