Hotels in Unawatuna
There are plenty of hotels in Unawatuna, but the bulk of the accommodation here is a guesthouse with the simplest amenities and with a minimum of services. It is for this reason that Unawatuna is one of the most popular destinations in Sri Lanka for independent travelers and young people. Expensive star hotels are also there, but there are not many of them.
The cost of budget accommodation in Unawatuna starts from 2200 rupees (6.58 USD, see Sri Lanka money, exchange rate). But it should be understood that for this money you will get a shabby room with a fan, cold water, insects, and perhaps even a shared toilet on the street. Local residents organize orphanages of this type in their homes, and rent them out on the cheap. You can find such inexpensive accommodation only on the spot, through the booking system such housing is not rented. The price tag for accommodation with amenities (air conditioning, no insects and hot water) starts from $ 25.
Now, as for choosing a location for a hotel in Unawatuna. As usual, the most expensive accommodation is near the beach, cheaper a little further from it. The bulk of hotels and gests are concentrated along the Welle Dewalaya Road, and if you want to be close to the beach and in the center, it is best to stay here. There is also accommodation along Matara Road and in the adjacent Rumassala woodland where you can find something cheaper. Read more about the areas and beaches below.
Book your hotel in advance or not in Unawatuna, depends on how demanding you are about the quality of the rooms. The fact is that good inexpensive accommodation options with high user ratings for reviews in search engines are booked several months in advance, even in low season, and they are, of course, better to book in advance. If you are willing to suffer some inconvenience, or are looking for really cheap accommodation, then you can safely come and look for something on the spot.
You can find and book accommodation in Unawatuna on these sites or through the search form. All sites have a Russian interface and Russian-language customer support, a lot of reviews from real guests.

Beaches and areas in Unawatuna
Unawatuna has one main beach, and within walking distance through the forest is another small picturesque beach Jungle Beach. To the east of the area for many tens of kilometers along the coast there are other independent beach resorts Dalawella, Kogalla, Weligama, etc.to Tangale itself, but you need to get to them by Transport.
The influence of tides in Unawatuna is little pronounced, the level differences between tides are minimal. Sometimes you can find the erroneous opinion that the ebb and flow are tied to the time of day, but this is completely wrong. In fact, the water level depends on the position of the Moon, The Sun, and even the terrain, and for this reason it is impossible to say unequivocally that on a particular beach the tides are at the same time.
The calculation of tides in Unawatuna is made by complex mathematical methods and on the basis of collected statistics. Here is a reliable forecast of the tides in Unawatuna for the next six months.

Main Beach and center
The main beach has a length of 1 kilometer. Many well-known sources on the Internet and TV channels, such as Discovery, include this beach in the top ten beaches of the planet. But we do not agree with this assessment. Our assessment of this beach is comfortable but mediocre. Really suitable for recreation and swimming, the western part of the beach has a length of only 500 meters, the rest of the eastern half is occupied by restaurants and hotels, almost resting their foundations in the water. Although it is possible to swim in the eastern part, it is unpleasant. You can forget about long romantic walks along the shore here. On our interactive map, we marked the suitable and unsuitable part for recreation with green and red sections, respectively.
Main beach of Unawatuna The main advantage of Unawatuna Beach are small waves in any season, because the Bay in which it is located is protected by a coral reef. There are no palm trees on the shore, only cafes, hotels and a fortified dam. The sand here is fine and clean, constantly cleaned. The slope of the bottom is normal, so even at low tide you can swim. True, in some places the bottom goes very sharply, but there are shallow places for swimming with children.
The center of Unawatuna has formed along the main beach and Welle Dewalaya Rd. It is here that the bulk of hotels and hostels are concentrated. In principle, almost all the life of the area is concentrated along this road: shops, travel agencies, restaurants and cafes are located along it. The street is not pedestrian, and at the same time very narrow and without sidewalks, it is inconvenient to move along it. But if you want to be in the middle of the fun, it's better to settle here.

Jungle Beach
A small cozy Jungle Beach is a 20-minute walk through the jungle from the center on the other side of the Cape on which Unawatuna is located. The beach is very tiny, and consists of two beaches 50 and 100 meters long, separated by a rocky area. This place is much more beautiful than the main beach, but you can also forget about the tranquility and solitude here. Once Jungle Beach was a little-known and almost secret place, but today vacationers poured here in a stream, there was a cafe, sun beds. Fortunately, so far, apart from the cafe, there is nothing else from the infrastructure, and the place has still retained its naturalness. And the Big Beach is still without sun beds at all and much more deserted. Here are excellent conditions for snorkeling, so do not forget to take your mask, or you can rent in the city from 600 rupees (1.79 USD, see currency of Sri Lanka and its exchange rate) a set of Maxi and tube, or a set with fins and a vest from 2200 rupees (6.58 USD). Underwater life begins as early as 20-30 metarchs from the shore. And yet, here are some of the best sunsets in Sri Lanka.
Jungle Beach To get to Jungle Beach from the center of Unawatuna, follow the signs along the scenic path through the jungle. Wooden signs for the beach in the center begin at the Welle dewalaya - Yaddehimulla road fork. Go one and a half kilometers or 25 minutes along a simple and interesting trail. You can get here by motorcycle or car on a detour through Marata Road and Rumassala road, you will have to drive 4 kilometers. A steep descent leads to the beach itself, so the transport will have to be left unattended at the top or for 100 rupees in the parking lot (0.3 USD). It can also be reached by boat from the main beach.

Matara Road District
Along the main road Matara Road there are some good hotels with very favorable prices. But you should know that having settled in one of them you will be far from the beaches, you will have to walk 15-20 minutes every time. Even if you stop at a place where Matara Road runs almost directly past the eastern part of the beach (next to the Unawatuna Diving Centre), before reaching the normal beach you will still have to wade through an obstacle course along the shore, since the eastern part is unsuitable for recreation.
