Dondra (Dondra Head, Dondra Lighthouse) is a promontory near the city Matara, which is the southernmost point Sri Lanka. There is also a lighthouse built in 1889.
The Cape is popular with tourists as a place for a short stop in order to visit the most extreme southern point of the island and look at the lighthouse. Further to a distance of 8 thousand kilometers stretches the Indian Ocean, and then Antarctica begins. The southern point, by the way, is not at the lighthouse itself, but about 500 meters from it. You can walk to it along the shore, or go to it on the main road.
The lighthouse will have to climb on foot to a height of about 10 floors. At the top you can go to the circular observation deck, which offers stunning views. If you come here, then by all means try to get upstairs, it's worth it. You can get to the lighthouse by paying a reward to the lighthouse keeper. He can ask for 500 rupees, but you can bargain up to 200. If the door to the lighthouse is closed, wait a bit and spin around, the caretaker will appear after a while.

🚶 How to get there
Dondra is about five kilometers east of Matara (see Dondra on the map). It is best to get here by rented transport, and some sightseeing tours are also brought here. If you wish, you can get here by bus from Matara from the main bus station. Other resorts in southern Sri Lanka (Hikkaduwa, Unawatuna, Mirissa, etc.) can also be reached by bus, but you will have to change buses in Matara.
