Madunagala Hot Springs

Description and is it worth a visit

Madunagala Hot Springs are located in the south of Sri Lanka quite far from all popular resorts. The nearest resort Tangalle is almost 50 kilometers away, let alone Unawatune and others. Nevertheless, this place is worthy of such a long trip, especially since along the way you can see a lot more interesting things. From any resort in the south, you can go to the hot springs for one day, but for this you have to get by taxi, tuk-tuk or rent transport.

This place is little known among tourists, and therefore tourists here are very rare guests. But the locals hot springs are very popular, and almost sacred. The territory of Hot Springs is quite extensive and well-groomed, and even includes bungalows where you can stay overnight or stay longer if you want to take longer hot baths. True, unfortunately, to take hot therapeutic baths as it is done at Hot Springs in other countries, it will not work here. Immerse yourself completely in hot healing water will not succeed. Hot springs are wells in the open air, water from which is scooped up with buckets and poured over. No hot baths.

Next to the wells there are changing rooms (but there is no shower in them), benches, sheds. There are no storage boxes, and you will have to leave them on the benches and look after them while you pour from the bucket. The appearance of locals in swimsuits is not welcome here, although officially the administration is not prohibited. The locals themselves are drenched right in their clothes, or wrapped in sheets.

A little about the water itself: it has a temperature of 44 degrees, is saturated with minerals, and does not smell of hydrogen sulfide.
