Langkawi Airport: general info and flights
Langkawi International Airport (IATA code - LGK) is the main gateway for tourists to Langkawi Island. It is located in the western part of the island, a few kilometers from the main resort area (Langkawi airport on the map).
Although you can also get to Langkawi by ferry from mainland Malaysia, as well as from Satun and Koh Lipe in Thailand, the plane is still the most convenient way to get to the island. Moreover, this is also true for budget travelers who prefer to move with minimal expenses. For example, a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Langkawi can be done for just 20 dollars, which is comparable to a bus+ferry to Langkawi, but incomparably faster and more convenient in terms of time.

How to fly to Langkawi Airport, flights and tickets
You can fly to Langkawi Airport with AirAsia, Malaysia Airlines, Firefly, Happy Airways, Batik Air and SilkAir. Regular flights operate from Penang, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, as well as seasonally from Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Phuket. Flights from Kuala Lumpur and Penang are operated several times a day, especially many from Kuala Lumpur.
There are no direct flights from Russia and the CIS countries; you need to travel with a connection via Kuala Lumpur and an additional connection in a third country (China, UAE, Turkey, Thailand, etc.). So be prepared for a flight with two connections; one connection is much rarer. At Kuala Lumpur Airport, you will have to change from KLIA terminal (international terminal) to KLIA2 (budget airline terminal), which is not difficult because express trains for 2 ringgit and free buses run between the two terminals. But taking into account the need to go through passport and customs control, collect baggage, transfer to another terminal and check in for the subsequent flight, we would recommend allowing at least three hours for the connection, and preferably four or five in case of delays and queues at checkpoints.
Tip! When buying connecting flights, try to buy a ready-made flight on a single ticket (two flights on one itinerary receipt). In this case, the carrier will be responsible for your connection, and if the first flight is delayed, the airline will transport you to your final destination at their own expense. If you buy tickets separately, you are fully responsible for the connection.
Flights to Langkawi are also operated from the old Kuala Lumpur airport, Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport (formerly Subang). These are Firefly and Malindo Air. In such a case, for a connection with a change of airport, it is better to allow at least 5 hours and enough money for a taxi (from 75 to 200 ringgit).

Terminal layout and infrastructure
The airport has international status, and if you arrive on an international flight, you will be able to go through passport and customs control. There is only one terminal building, consisting of one level; it is impossible to get lost here, everything is very simple. There are no jetbridges; passengers are walked to the planes directly across the airfield.
Arrival area: what to do upon arrival
No surprises here. Upon arrival, follow the signs to Arrival, collect your luggage, and exit into the arrival hall. Here you can exchange currency, buy something at duty-free shops, order a car rental, and so on. From the arrival hall, you can easily move to the departure hall (it's one building) or directly outside, and you'll get to the taxi parking lot.
Departure area: check-in and security
In the arrival hall, there are self-check-in kiosks; first you need to go to them and get your boarding pass. Then with your boarding pass, you go to the cordoned-off area with baggage drop counters. When entering this area, you go through customs control (everyone, including domestic flights), drop off your baggage at the self-service kiosks, and proceed to the departure waiting area.
Important tip for saving money: Langkawi is a duty-free zone, and upon arrival at the airport, you might immediately want to buy something duty-free, like alcohol or sweets. But don't rush to buy, check the prices first. Although prices are indeed low here, they are even cheaper in duty-free shops at the resorts. So if you can hold off and need to save money, it's better to buy there.
Another important point! All passengers departing from Langkawi go through customs control (not to be confused with passport control) even on domestic flights. Since the island is a duty-free zone, the export of duty-free goods to the mainland is limited. For alcohol, it's 1 liter per person.
Useful services at the airport
SIM cards at the airport
There are official mobile phone operator shops in the arrival hall. You can buy a tourist SIM card right on the spot, exactly at the same price as in shops in Kuala Lumpur, Kuah, and so on, without markups. So feel free to buy it here. Just choose a suitable plan.
The simplest option we used: a Tune Talk SIM card for 30 days for 35 ringgit. SIM cards from another operator – Hotlink – are also sold.
Currency exchange and ATMs
The exchange rate at Langkawi Airport is quite decent. You can safely exchange your first hundred dollars here, and look for a better option already at the resorts. The rate here is noticeably better than at Kuala Lumpur International Airport. So if you're flying in transit through Kuala Lumpur Airport, it's better not to exchange there. To illustrate, we collected numbers on one day (selling rate of ringgit per dollar and euro):
- Kuala Lumpur Airport: dollar — 3.72 / euro — 4.25
- Langkawi Airport: dollar — 3.8 / euro — 4.576
- Exchange office in Kuah town: dollar — 3.85 / euro — 4.65
- Exchange office on Pantai Cenang: dollar — 3.8 / euro — 4.62
- Langkawi Sea Port: dollar — 3.7 / euro — 4.4
Keep in mind: there are several exchange offices at the airport, and their rates differ. On our trip, the best rate was at the exchange office with the SMJ sign, but it's still better to compare on the spot yourself.
In general, you can exchange various currencies at the airport, including rubles. But the rate for rubles is terrible — as it is everywhere on Langkawi. With Thai baht, Philippine pesos, or Singapore dollars, things are a bit better. But the most profitable option is dollars and euros.
Important point: Some exchange offices on Langkawi either don't accept old series US dollars (small bills, old series) at all, or give a very sad rate for them. So for exchange at the airport, it's better to have crisp new dollars or euros.
Another option is to withdraw local money from an ATM. There are Maybank and CIMB ATMs here. They do not charge a fee for withdrawing from foreign cards (on their side), meaning you will only pay your bank's commission. In terms of benefit, this is roughly equivalent to exchanging cash. UnionPay cards work — tested personally.

Wi-Fi and other services
The airport has free Wi-Fi (connection without entering data or SMS). There are also:
- car rental
- hotel booking desk
- tourist agencies (offer excursions, transfers, hotels)
- tourist information center
- cafes and Duty Free shops
What is missing: luggage storage and motorbike rentals (but you can rent one, more on that below).
How to get from Langkawi Airport
Langkawi Airport is located a bit away from the main resorts, so you will need to get to them by transport (Langkawi airport on the map). There is no public transport on the island at all, so you can get to the hotel by taxi or rented transport.
Taxi and Grab: prices and tips
- 💵 Cost: from 10 ringgit to 60 ringgit. Depends on the location and type of taxi.
- ⏲ Travel time: 10-60 minutes
There is official branded taxi (painted minivans) or Grab taxi. Using the Grab app is cheaper, you see the price immediately in the app. The difference with official taxi is significant, sometimes double. So we recommend installing Grab at home before your trip to Malaysia, it will definitely come in handy here. To order Grab, you can use the airport Wi-Fi or buy a SIM card.
| Destination | Fare in ringgit | Approximate price in rubles |
|---|---|---|
| Main beaches Cenang and Tengah (Pantai Cenang, Pantai Tengah) | 25 | approx. 475 USD. |
| Kuah Town | 45 | approx. 855 USD. |
| Kuah Jetty (Jetty Kuah) | 50 | approx. 950 USD. |
| Pantai Kok Beach | 25 | approx. 475 USD. |
| Datai Beach | 60 | approx. 1140 USD. |
| Tanjung Rhu Beach | 60 | approx. 1140 USD. |
| Ayer Hangat village and area | 60 | approx. 1140 USD. |
If you're on a budget, you can save a lot if you don't rush to order immediately after the plane lands, but wait until the main flow of passengers leaves, and then the prices in the app will drop. Also, the Grab app has a Saver fare, which gives even more discounts but increases the car arrival time. Finally, if you really need to save money, you can leave the airport area to the roundabout (turn right after exiting the terminal for 200 meters), and there you can order a Grab even cheaper.
An official taxi at fixed prices can be ordered at the counter at the terminal exit or directly from the drivers. You need to name the place you need to go to (hotel name, area/beach where it is located), they will tell you the cost, you pay it, receive a ticket, and with it go to the terminal exit, where taxi drivers meet you and put you in the car. You don't need to pay the driver anything else.
You can also pre-book a transfer from the airport, which is more comfortable; you will be met in the arrival hall with a sign and taken to your hotel door. You can book on websites or through the Kiwitaxi form (they have support, accept Russian cards):
Transport rental
- 💵 Cost: motorbike from 35 ringgit/day, car from 60 ringgit/day. These are minimum prices in the low season.
- ⏲ Travel time: 10-60 minutes
If you plan to actively drive around the island to see all the surroundings, rent transport right at the airport. You can rent a car or motorbike immediately upon arrival and return it before departure. Conveniently, you don't have to pay for all days of your vacation: you can rent a bike, for example, for a couple of days, then drop it off at the airport and go to your hotel by taxi.
Some companies even allow you to pick up the car in one place and drop it off in another. This is, of course, convenient, but usually they ask for an extra fee for it.
By the way, about prices. At the airport, they are often lower than at the resorts, although logically it should be the opposite. Here's concrete data from our trip:
- Motorbike: at the airport, you can get one from 35 ringgit if you book in advance and arrange delivery. At the popular Pantai Cenang beach, you'll be asked for a minimum of 50, but if you search hard and bargain, you can bring it down to 35 (but not guaranteed).
- Car: at the airport, rental starts from 60 ringgit. On Pantai Cenang, prices start from 120 ringgit.
These numbers are from personal experience; we monitored them online and corresponded with local rentals to understand the situation. Of course, your situation may turn out differently. But we made an unambiguous conclusion: it is more profitable to rent transport at the airport.
Now in more detail by category:
Car rental
There are plenty of rental company counters in the arrival hall. They usually have cars available. As soon as you exit, local "touts" immediately start actively offering their services. So if your budget allows and you don't want to bother with booking in advance, you'll find a car on the spot without problems.
But if you want to save money and know your arrival time exactly, it's better to book in advance online. There are many options: through aggregators (links below), find companies on Google Maps and message them in messengers, or just google local rental sites. All methods work; it's hard to single out one ideal one — just compare prices yourself.
Motorbike rental
This is a bit more complicated because there are no stationary rental counters like for cars. But near the exit from the terminal, people will still approach you offering to rent a scooter. After a short negotiation, we were offered one for 50 ringgit — this is currently a more or less standard price on the island.
Want it cheaper? Look for rentals in advance on Google Maps. Type "Motorbike For Rent" into the map search and call/message the contacts. They will deliver the motorbike to the terminal or take you to the rental point. But in general, there are many rental points near the airport; you can even walk. We used this scheme, tested it — we found options from 35 ringgit per day.
Our final advice: if you want to rent a car or motorbike on Langkawi, start with aggregators or a map search, it's more convenient and cheaper:
- Trip.com – yep, Trip.com has cars now too, and the prices are an absolute steal 💣. We recommend starting your search here.
- LocalRent - low prices, multilingual support (👍 Our Choice)
- DiscoverCars - price comparison worldwide
- Qeeq - over 7 million cars in 200 countries
💡 Tip: Compare offers on different platforms — prices and available cities may vary significantly.

Hotels near Langkawi Airport
There are several hotels directly at the airport and nearby, but considering that the airport is not a transit hub, there is not much point in staying at them. The nearest residential area, Padang Matsirat, is one and a half kilometers from the airport exit, but there is no beach, only the shore. The most popular areas and beaches, Pantai Cenang and Pantai Tengah, are five kilometers away.
