TBS Bus Terminal (Terminal Bersepadu Selatan) in Kuala Lumpur

TBS bus station in Kuala Lumpur — almost like an airport

Since 2015, most long-distance bus services from Kuala Lumpur have been moved from the Pudu Sentral (PuduRaya) bus station to the TBS (Terminal Bersepadu Selatan) bus terminal. It's not just a bus station, but a whole transport hub, almost like an airport, which also integrates city rail, commuter trains, airport rail, and city buses. So now, if you arrive in KL by bus or need to leave, you'll inevitably pass through TBS. The only exceptions are buses to Kuala Lumpur International Airport and to the Genting Highlands resort, which still depart from PuduRaya and KL Sentral station.

TBS Terminal Facilities

Inside TBS terminal in Kuala Lumpur

The bus station is huge, spanning multiple levels, and organized like an airport. It has all the amenities and services for travelers: ATMs, currency exchange (rates aren't great; better to exchange in the city), a mother and child room, waiting lounges, luggage storage, a hotel, and plenty of food courts and cafes. Particularly useful for tourists and travelers are the information center, ticket vending machines, and currency exchange booths. There are two currency exchange counters in the terminal, open from 7:30 AM to 10:00 PM.

Tickets at the station can be bought at counters or from automatic vending machines. There are also terminals for checking and printing e-ticket bookings.

Access to the boarding platforms is through automatic turnstiles, using the gate number (Gate 1, 2, etc.) indicated on your ticket or on the departure board in the hall. So, the principle here is also similar to an airport. Even the arrival process is managed through gates; you can't just walk off the bus and out via the parking lot – you must exit through the terminal.

Where You Can Go from TBS

You can depart from or arrive at TBS from almost anywhere in Malaysia, with few exceptions. There are also international services to Singapore and Thailand, but there is no passport or customs control here; you go through that at the land border.

TBS is also convenient to use as a transit hub for routes from north to south or vice versa. For example, if you need to travel from Penang to Malacca and couldn't get a ticket on a direct bus, you can transfer here. In such a case, you don't even need to pre-book tickets to Malacca; you can buy them here for the next available bus.

How to Get to TBS from Kuala Lumpur

KLIA Express train at BTS station

The bus station is located 13 kilometers from the city center, practically on its outskirts (TBS on Kuala Lumpur map). Fortunately, right next to TBS, connected by a pedestrian bridge, is the BTS (Bandar Tasik Selatan) railway station. From there, you can reach the city center via KTM Komuter commuter trains, LRT city rail, or the KLIA Transit airport rail (see more details about Kuala Lumpur transport and how to use it here).

The names TBS (Terminal Bersepadu Selatan) and BTS (Bandar Tasik Selatan) are often confused, but they are different stations:

  • TBS is the actual bus station where intercity buses arrive and depart.
  • BTS is the urban transport station, featuring city rail (LRT), KTM commuter trains, a bus stop, and a taxi stand.

Both stations are located next to each other and connected by an elevated walkway. Strictly speaking, if you need to leave TBS using city transport, you should immediately follow the signs across the walkway to BTS; there's no other way.

  • Going to KL's Tourist Center

For tourists, the most convenient way is to take the LRT (Sri Petaling Line, marked SPL in brown on maps), as it goes directly to the city's tourist center. If your hotel is in Chinatown or Little India, convenient stations to head for are Plaza Rakyat or Masjid Jamek respectively (fare 2.9 ringgit). You can easily choose stations and plan routes to hotels in other areas using Google Maps; switch to public transport mode in the directions.

Besides the LRT, you can take bus No. 590 to Puduraya station in the city center. It's cheaper, but the journey takes 40 minutes, and you first have to walk almost 2 kilometers to the bus stop along a somewhat confusing route. What's worse, you cannot pay for city buses with a bank card or cash, only with a transport card. Therefore, we do not recommend this option.

  • Going to the Airport

If you need to go directly from TBS to the airport terminals KLIA or KLIA2, you can take a bus. Tickets are sold at counters and machines. Buses depart every 30-60 minutes and cost from 12 ringgit. Alternatively, you can take the pedestrian walkway to BTS station (Bandar Tasik Selatan) mentioned above and take the KLIA Express airport train for 38 ringgit. Trains run every 20 minutes from 5:00 AM to 12:00 AM.

  • Going to KL Sentral Station

If you need to get to another main terminal, KL Sentral (if your hotel is in the Brickfields area or you want to continue your journey by train), you can take the KLIA Express airport train for 5.9 ringgit, or take the city rail with transfers.

  • Going to Other Areas

Finally, if you need to get anywhere and aren't on a super tight budget, you can take a taxi. It's best to use the Grab app; Maxim or Bolt are also options. Prices are dynamic but typically range from 20 to 30 ringgit to the center.
