General tourist information

Perentian Islands, also Perentian, Perentian) is an archipelago of volcanic origin located in the territorial waters of Malaysia in the Gulf of Thailand of the South China Sea, near the border with Thailand (Islands on the interactive map of Malaysia). The distance from the mainland coast of the Malacca Peninsula is only ten nautical miles (19 kilometers). Administratively, they belong to the state of Trengganu in the Confederation of West Malaysia and are subordinate to the hereditary monarch. The composition of the population is homogeneous – more than 90% are Malaysians, the remaining fraction is distributed among Chinese, Indians and Thais. The population is predominantly Sunni Muslims.

The archipelago includes two relatively large islands of Persian-Kecil "small" (Pulau Persian Kecil), Persian-Besar "big" (Persian Besar) and a scattering of conditionally inhabited satellites: Susu Dara Kecil, Rava, Terumbu Tiga, Susu Dara Besar, Togong Laut, Serenggeh and others. A significant part of the islands is covered with dense tropical vegetation, and their relief is dominated by rocky plateaus. The coastline alternates sandy beaches in open bays with basalt rock headlands and pointed reefs.

At the legislative level, the archipelago has been granted the status of a protected area under the banner of the Redong Marine National Park. There is a list of strict rules regarding fishing, collecting shells and corals, garbage disposal. Holidays in the nature reserve can be planned both as a permanent stay and in the form of day visits during sea cruises.

Recreation

The main islands of Perhentian abound with Bounty-quality beaches with gentle entrances to the sea, cleared of coral debris. Almost every equipped stretch of sandy beach is accompanied by a picturesque coral reef. On Perkhetian Besar, the relatively crowded tuna Bay Beach, located near the pier, can be contrasted with the quiet shore of the Abdul Chalet Hotel or Penang 1000 – the most remote, exotic access to the sea. On a small island, Long Beach stands out for civilization, however, the shade there can be found only under umbrellas, palm trees are located at a considerable distance from the sea. In addition, there are many private beaches with catchy names (romance, turtle and others), which can be reached by water taxi.

But not only beach holidays are attractive archipelago. This is one of the best places in Malaysia for diving and snorkeling. The underwater world of the National Reserve is unusually rich: turtles, whale sharks, clownfish, Barracudas, stingrays, parrot fish-this is not a complete list of sea creatures that you can meet in local waters. Here are the best places:

• Terumbu-Tiga is an Island-Marina for fans of drift diving. This is favored by a sandy bottom, visibility under water up to 15 m, shallow water (depth up to 18 m), moderation of the current.
• Tokong Laut - an uninhabited rock with massive blocks forming an underwater slope. Immersion allows you to study changes in the landscape at depths up to 30 M.
• Rava is a labyrinth island riddled with many underwater tunnels and caves. The passages are safe and swimmers can swim through them.
• Sugar Rack - sunken 90-meter cargo ship off the coast of Kuala Besud.
• the Rubik's Cube Reef, named after the implementation of the idea of building an artificial reef through concrete blocks.

Infrastructure

Developed tourist infrastructure is available only on two islands of the archipelago-big Besar and small Kecil. At the same time, there are differences in comfort and pricing policy for services between the twin islands, separated by a narrow strait, the width of which is 1-3 km. Kecil is inferior in elitism of Service and is suitable for tourists who are not inclined to lay out substantial sums for goodies and fine dishes in restaurants, while Besar is more expensive with the corresponding hotels. Accordingly, hotels in Besar are designed for the age category that prefers regularity and peace, and Kecil was chosen by fans of backpacking, arranging night gatherings with karaoke. On the rest of the islands, tourists usually do not live and visit them during boat trips or are involved in active recreation programs.

Fans of spending time on vacation shopping will be upset. The trade network on the islands offers only tourist items, unpretentious souvenirs, groceries, fruits and soft drinks. Alcohol is sold at very high prices due to high excise taxes.

Weather, seasons on the Perchentians

On the Perkhentians, as in other resorts of the east coast of Malaysia, there are two seasons:

High season (dry season), lasts from June to October. This is the best time to visit: not too high temperature, almost no precipitation.

Low season (monsoon season), falls in November-may. Constantly blowing monsoon winds create high waves on the sea, frequent precipitation, the sky is often overcast. During this period, tourist life on the island is almost completely frozen, hotels, restaurants and entertainment are closed. There's no point in going to the islands at this time.

How to get there

There is no airport on the Perkhentians, you can only get there by boat from the town of Kuala Besut in the state of Terengganu. From the pier in Kuala Besut from 09:00 to 17:00 high - speed boats depart without a schedule for occupancy, the cost is 70 ringgit in both directions (40 in one direction), 30-40 minutes on the way. From the islands boats go to 08:00, 12:00, 16:00 or by occupancy.

Kuala Besut, in turn, can be reached by bus from Kuala Lumpur from Terminal Bersepadu Selatan (TBS) station (not from Hentian Putra Station as before), cost from 40 ringgit, departure at 09:00 and 21:00, 9 hours on the way.

Transport

There is no transport on the island, and you can only move on foot or by water taxi between the beaches and the islands. All beaches and tourist areas are connected by trails, you can get on foot in a maximum of 30 minutes. Water taxi can be found on all beaches, cost from 12 ringgit (see currency (and Exchange Rate), the price is negotiable, you can bargain.

Attractions

There are no historical attractions in the archipelago, but there is an abundance of natural ones, and most of them are under water. On both islands there are several diving centers, snorkeling tours are offered. On the islands themselves, you can make trekking trips to the jungle.
