Pantai Cenang Beach (also known as Cenang Beach) is the most popular beach and the main tourist area on Langkawi island. This is where the largest concentration of hotels on the island is found — from budget guesthouses to quite comfortable options. If you're looking to save money, your search should start here, but there are also expensive hotels. It's best to book in advance, especially during high season (November to March). You can rent not only a hotel or guesthouse room but also a house for a longer stay.
The beach here, while not perfect, is very good. The sand is very fine, the sandy strip is very wide, and all the traditional water activities are available. Sun loungers and umbrellas are available for rent at 10 ringgit. The sunsets here are amazing. Sometimes waves wash trash onto the shore, but it's thoroughly and conscientiously cleaned up in the mornings.
The entire Pantai Cenang area and beach stretch for 2 kilometers in length. The main infrastructure is concentrated along Jalan Pantai Chenang, which runs parallel to the beach. The road doesn't interfere with beach relaxation as it's set back and separated by a row of hotels and shops. Along the street are hotels, cafes and restaurants, travel agencies, duty-free shops, local stalls, and a large shopping mall. The Underwater World aquarium is also here. There's no go-kart track in Cenang (it's located in a different area). Despite being the most touristy place in Langkawi, there's practically no nightlife here, and by midnight the streets are almost empty, with only a few bars and restaurants still open.
Our verdict: whatever the beach and hotels are like, and whatever conflicting reviews you might read, the objective reality is that Pantai Cenang is the most convenient area and beach for a vacation in Langkawi and indeed on the entire west coast of Malaysia. It's the one place that combines a decent beach, excellent tourist infrastructure, and plenty of duty-free shops all in one spot. There's simply nothing else like it in all of Malaysia.
How to Get to Pantai Cenang Beach
Cenang is just five kilometers from Langkawi Airport (Pantai Cenang on map). You can get here by taxi or rent transport at the airport. From Langkawi Airport, you can book a Grab — this is the most cost-effective option. The fare on the saver rate starts from 20 ringgit (5.04 USD), but depending on demand and time of day, it's usually 30–35 ringgit (7.57 USD). Official taxis (painted minivans) cost more — about one and a half times as much.
If you're arriving at Kuah Jetty, Grab also works: the trip to Cenang takes about 20–30 minutes and costs from 25 ringgit (6.31 USD). For more details on all transport options on the island, check out our article Transport in Langkawi: Getting Around.
Beach Infrastructure and Features
Where to Stay in Cenang
As mentioned, Cenang has the largest selection of accommodation on the island and the most developed infrastructure. You'll find budget guesthouses (from 100–150 ringgit per night) as well as expensive chain hotels with their own pools and beachfront access. If you're looking for peace and quiet, consider the left part of the beach (past the aquarium towards Tengah Beach) — it's much quieter there, and you can easily walk to the central, more active area in 10 minutes. Alternatively, check out the far right edge where the stunning Pelangi Beach Resort & Spa, Langkawi is located — the beach there is almost like a "Bounty" paradise.
If you want all the amenities right on your doorstep, choose hotels on the right side, where the main cafes, bars, and water sports rentals are concentrated.

Beach Activities: Water Sports Prices
Cenang traditionally offers many options for active water recreation. Be prepared that boats and jet skis constantly zip along the shore, and in the mornings and evenings, jeeps drive on the beach to deliver or pick up equipment. This sometimes leads to the smell of diesel fuel, and you might even spot fuel canisters in the sand. There are designated swimming areas marked by buoys, and they are safe.
Prices are listed per session. You can and should haggle on the spot — a 10–20% discount is definitely realistic.
| Activity | Price (RM) | Price (in RUB) | Jet ski, 15 min | 150 | 37.83 USD | Jet ski, 30 min | 200 | 50.44 USD | Large jet ski for 4 people | 180 | 45.4 USD | Banana boat (1–5 people) | 150 | 37.83 USD | Donut boat (5 people) | 200 | 50.44 USD | Parasailing (per person) | 250 | 63.05 USD | Wakeboard | 200 | 50.44 USD | Jet ski safari to 4 spots (per jet ski) | from 650 | from 164 USD |
