What to Expect and Is It Worth Visiting
The largest attraction of the region stretches across the entire Samara region - Zavolzhsky historical shaft or Novo-Zakamskaya defensive line, built in the early 18th century. According to the official version, the defensive line was originally built in the 17th century to protect the eastern borders of the Russian state from the raids of the Kalmyks, Kirghiz and Bashkirs, and later, in the 18th century, it was further strengthened and rebuilt. But there are versions that this fortification existed much earlier, and its appearance is attributed even to the activities of a vanished civilization in the second millennium BC.
Whatever it was, the scale of this structure is amazing, and it took incredible efforts to create it. The historical rampart stretches across the entire Russian Volga region, and starting in the Astrakhan region reaches Tatarstan, and then turns east and gets lost somewhere in the foothills of the Middle Urals. Today, only a barely noticeable earthen rampart remains of it, passing by which you can not even recognize it as a man-made structure. But if you look at it from above, you can immediately understand that it was created by human hands: the defensive line is made in the form of straight lines and at certain intervals reinforced with outposts.

🚶 How to get there
The Zavolzhsky earthwork passes through the entire Samara region, but one of the most convenient for inspection and preserved sections runs along the M5 highway (Moscow-Chelyabinsk) in the Krasnoyarsk and Sergievsky districts of the Samara region (fortification on the map). It is best to visit it by private car, ideally you can combine its visit with a visit to Blue Lake.
And we also advise you to see ready-made excursions around Samara, with which it will be much more interesting to get acquainted with the city. You can find and book group or individual tours of Samara from local residents on these verified sites with reviews:
