The Cathedral of St. Alexander Nevsky is the largest church in Yalta and one of the oldest places of worship. His appearance was associated with the Russian Emperor Alexander II, who died as a result of a terrorist attack organized by the revolutionary movement "Narodnaya Volya" in 1881.
The decision to build the temple was made 9 years after the death of the emperor. Notable citizens B. V. Khvoshchinsky and Ivan Tokmakov contributed considerable shares of donations for the construction, and Baron Andrei Wrangel donated a plot of land for the construction. The cathedral project was personally approved by Emperor Alexander III, and Empress Maria Feodorovna participated in laying the first stone in 1891. The consecration of the cathedral took place already under the next Russian Emperor Nicholas II in 1902, he personally attended the ceremony with his family.
During the reign of the Soviet government, the cathedral was very lucky, it was closed for only a few years from 1938 to 1942, and did not have time to suffer much from ruin. Therefore, it has reached the present day almost in an unnamed form.
