General information and recreation in Jankoy

Dzhankoy (Dzhankoy, Jankoy) - a city in the northern steppe part of Crimea, 93 kilometers from Simferopol and about 60 kilometers from the nearest Seashore (Dzhankoy on the map of Crimea. The city is small, with a population of just over 38,000. During the reign of the Crimean Khan Dzhankoy was a village, and now it is an industrial city. It is the center of agricultural activity: processing of products and production of machinery. Tourism here is poorly developed.

There is a nodal railway station and it was an important transport hub on the way of tourists from Ukraine by rail, but after 2014 this railway connection was completely stopped, and the city lost its status as a transport hub. As of 2021, the work of the railway station has been restored and trains from the territory of the Russian Federation in the direction of Sevastopol and Simferopol are stopping there, but now tourists usually do not transfer here.

Today it is a quiet and peaceful city, which, frankly speaking, is of little note for tourists and vacationers. Here you can make a stop for one or two days, during which you can visit one of the few local attractions, and there is nothing longer to do. The nearest coast and beaches are 60 kilometers away in the city of Krasnoperekopsk, so there can be no talk of any beach holiday in Dzhankoy.

Dzhankoy can also be used as a base place to get to some interesting sights in the northern steppe part of the Crimea, but in general this area will be interesting only to the most inquisitive and inquisitive travelers who love little-traveled non-tourist routes, and not traditional tourists and vacationers.

At the same time, we note that one should not think that Dzhankoy is a forgotten and undeveloped place. In fact, it is the largest and most developed city in the northern Crimea. There is everything for life and short-term tourist stay: shops and markets, cafes and restaurants, gas stations, supermarkets and a network electronics store DNSD, there is a city transport system. And the city park even has a free WiFi zone.

Hotels in Jankoy where to stay

The choice of places of residence in Dzhankoy, to put it mildly, is not rich, because vacationers do not stay here for long. There are only three hotels "Carpathians", "Tavria" and "emerald", and you can still find accommodation with local residents in private mini-hotels. All options are very low quality in the type of "just to spend the night". At the same time, prices for an overnight stay are not from the budget: you will have to pay for the night from 2 T.P. for a room for two.

None of these few accommodation options are presented in the search and booking systems of hotels, and therefore you will either have to search and check in on the spot after the fact, or book in advance by phone:

  • Karpaty, Sovetskaya Street, 25B, Tel. +7 (978) 888-76-68
  • "Tavria", Krymskaya STR., 37, Tel. +7 (978) 123-00-50

Jankoy weather, tourist seasons

As in general in the Crimea, the high tourist season in Dzhankoy falls on the summer months, although if you wish, you can come as early as may, stay until October. Since the city is located in the steppe plain zone of the Crimea far from the sea, the average temperature in summer is higher than on the coast, it can be very hot. Unfortunately, weather disasters also happen, especially in recent years: strong winds, showers, lightning and hail. Therefore, going to these parts to rest on your car, take care of its protection from possible weather troubles, and follow the weather forecasts and warnings of the Ministry of emergency situations.

  • By car

Dzhankoy is located away from the main routes, interesting to tourists, so by car it is rarely called even on the way. Nevertheless, if you are interested in seeing this city, you can route through it, for example, to Olenevka, Mezhvodny, Chernomorsky, Steregushchy or Yevpatoria. After entering the peninsula on the Crimean bridge, you will first go along the excellent Tavrida highway, but then you will have to turn towards Dzhankoy and continue along the e97 Highway (European route Kherson-Ashkale). The last 100 kilometers of the road along it are quite good, in 2021 it was partially overhauled.

If you decide to continue from Dzhankoy to the north or west to the mentioned Olenevka, Mezhvodnoye, etc.by the shortest route, you will have to go along a bad asphalt road in patches through Botanic, Razdolnoye, Steregushche, etc., or take a detour along good roads through Simferopol.

  • Dzhankoy Museum of local lore

A small museum of local lore, which, despite the deplorable state of the building, has a large interesting collection of exhibits, and its employees conduct informative excursions. Located in the city center at 9 Karl Marx Street (Museum on the map). Working hours: from 10:00 to 13:00 and from 15:00 to 18:00; Saturday and Sunday – days off. Phone +7 (978) 756-43-77.

  • Jankoya city park

Located in the city center (Park on map), admission is free. In summer, this is the most popular place for recreation and walks, simple children's attractions work and sweet fast food and drinks are sold. It is also a free WiFi zone, you will need a SIM card to connect.

  • Cathedral of the intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos or Pokrovsky Cathedral

Located next to the city park at 33 R. Luxemburg Street (temple on the map). This is the largest and most significant Christian Church in the city, one of its business cards. It was built on the site of the 1909 church destroyed in the Soviet period.

  • Krymskaya Street

Krymskaya Street runs in the center of the city along the railway and there are two railway stations and a bus station, markets and shops (Street on the map). It is considered the main street of the city, although it is difficult to call it a full-fledged tourist street.

  • Jankoy Jami Mosque

Located at 17A Sovkhoznaya Street (mosque on the map). A small, but at the same time the main city mosque.

  • Sulphurous thermal spring

This untamed, wild source of hot natural water is located outside the city in the village of Dorozhnoye right in the middle of the field (thermal spring on the map). It consists of a concrete open-air pool, into which hot water flows from a deep well. In water there is radon, hydrogen sulfide, many trace elements and salts. Take baths with caution, as there is no information about the properties and benefits of water. Swimming is free.

  • Kalinovsky landscape park

Located 30 kilometers from the center of Dzhankoy on a peninsula jutting out into the Salt Lake Siwash (Kalinovsky landscape park on the map). This regional landscape park was created to preserve samples of biodiversity of the steppe regions of Crimea in the Sivash district. Its attendance is free, and in fact there are no restrictions to visit it, including by car. You will not see anything particularly interesting here, only steppe landscapes, the coastal strip and the Salt Lake Sivash, but if there is nothing to do at all, you can go during the day.

  • Czech Church of the heart of Jesus Christ

Located in the village of Alexandrovka, 45 kilometers away (Church on the map). Built in 1911 and once was the richest and most beautiful Catholic Church in the Crimea, and now inactive and in poor condition. Available for inspection from outside and inside, but inspection from inside is dangerous, collapses are possible.

  • Estate Of I. Shatilov

It is located in the village of Tsvetushche, 55 kilometers from Dzhankoy, so it is best to visit it on the way (Manor on the map). This is a chic estate that belonged to the ancient Lithuanian family of Shatilo, built by Iosif Nikolayevich Shatilov in 1882. Now some of the buildings of the estate are empty and abandoned, some do not even have roofs, and in one wing there is a library.
