By car through Adygea: what to see, best places and practical tips

Adygea is a region made for road trips. Mountain serpentines, scenic roads, and complete freedom of movement let you see the maximum in a short time. There are no crowds of public transport here, and the main beauties — the Rufabgo waterfalls, the Lago-Naki plateau, the Khadzhokh Gorge — are accessible precisely to those behind the wheel. We've driven all the main routes and gathered the best spots and important nuances: from fuel prices to places where a fine might be waiting for you. Everything is personally tested.

Practical tips for road trippers

The roads of Adygea are not just asphalt and serpentines; they also come with special survival rules for your car. We've gathered everything that will actually come in handy on the road: where to fill up, how to avoid fines, and where to park at popular spots.

Road conditions

The main route from Maykop to Guzeripl via Kamennomostsky and Dakhovskaya is good quality asphalt, recently renovated. But don't get too comfortable: after Guzeripl, a mountain serpentine begins towards Yavorovaya Polyana and the Uzurub checkpoint in the Caucasus Nature Reserve. There are potholes, sharp turns, and no guardrails in places. In rain, the surface becomes slippery and visibility drops. A passenger car will get through everywhere, but low clearance will force you to crawl cautiously. Fuel consumption in the mountains is noticeably higher — keep that in mind when planning.

Throughout the route, there are sections with sharp turns where speeding is not a good idea. On the way to Yavorovaya Polyana and the caves are the most concentrated serpentines. If you're driving for the first time, don't hesitate to go slow: there's very little traffic here, so you won't be bothering anyone much.

Where to fill up and what to bring

The last gas station is Lukoil in Kamennomostsky. Fuel there is expensive, and further on, all the way to Guzeripl and Yavorovaya Polyana, there are no stations. Our advice: fill up your tank in Maykop, where there's also Rosneft and Gazprom. It will be noticeably cheaper, and you won't be left with an empty tank on the pass.

Before the trip, be sure to check your spare tire and jack. Buy a tire repair kit (plug + tool) at an auto parts store — it costs about 100 rubles. A puncture is not uncommon on mountain roads, and this kit will help faster than a tow truck.

Parking: where to leave your car

Generally speaking, parking in Adygea is not a problem. At hotels and guest houses — free, often in the courtyard. At most attractions, you can leave your car on the shoulder or on small free lots.

We've only encountered paid parking in two places:

  • Yavorovaya Polyana — at the entrance checkpoint for a multi-day hike, they charge 200 rubles per day. If you're going for the day, you can leave your car on the shoulder before the barrier for free.
  • Cable car in Dakhovskaya — official parking costs 250 rubles, but we always park for free in the village and walk 10-15 minutes to the station.

Cameras, road markings and safety

There are many speed cameras on the roads, and in some places — cameras for crossing into oncoming traffic. The trickiest section is near the Cossack Stone on the road to Dakhovskaya. Part of the parking there is separated by a solid line, and traffic police officers from ambushes regularly issue fines for crossing it. Don't give in to the temptation to cut the corner — it's better to drive a little further and turn around legally.

Another difficult place where we've often seen patrols hiding behind sharp turns is on the section from Kamennomostsky to the Rufabgo waterfalls (towards Dakhovskaya and Guzeripl). There, you'll find solid lines and speed limit signs. Don't give in to "provocations" from local drivers who will tailgate you or, on the contrary, drive very slowly, forcing you to speed up or cross the solid line to overtake. It could well be that around the next bend, a patrol car with video recording is waiting.

And, of course, always buckle up: they check seat belts.

To avoid missing a single viewpoint or gas station, we've gathered all the key points on one map. It marks the attractions from this guide, reserve checkpoints, parking lots, caves, and that last gas station in Kamennomostsky. It's very handy to open it on your phone and use as a navigator: our map works with Organic Maps, Maps.me, and other OSM-based apps — download it in advance and use it offline, since mountain reception is spotty. Just open the map page, click "Download", and import the file into the app — all the points will load themselves.
