What to Expect and Is It Worth Visiting
Reproi is a unique natural landmark in Abkhazia, unofficially considered the shortest river in the world. At least, this is how the Abkhazians themselves position it, because its length is only 18 meters. The fact is that officially the world record for the shortest river in the world, listed in the Guinness Book of Records, belongs to the D River in the USA, whose length is 36 meters, and it is a real giant compared to the Reprois. However, the official recognition of the Reprua as the shortest river in the world is now impossible, since the Republic itself is not recognized by most of the world community.
The Ruproy River comes out of a sinkhole at the foot of the cliff, flows 18 meters through a pebble beach, and flows into the Black Sea. Interestingly, the source of water that feeds the river is located 15 kilometers away from it in the mountains on the Arabica plateau at an altitude of 2500 m, and it is also fed by streams flowing from the second deepest cave in the world, Kruber-Voronya. And it is also considered one of the coldest rivers of the Black Sea coast of the Caucasus. Well, if you find yourself here at the end of summer in August-September, then you will walk up the stairs to the river under a large fig tree, and if you are lucky, you will be able to pick figs for free.
The Legend of Reprois
There is an ancient Abkhaz legend that the Reproa feeds on the tears of the daughters of the underground spirit. Legend has it that in ancient times an underground spirit lived on the shores of the Black Sea with his son and three twin daughters. The sons guarded the Gagra passage to Abkhazia, and for them the father spirit created invincible weapons, and the daughters took care of the warriors, cooked food and sewed clothes. After the death of the spirit, the weapon ceased to be renewed, and the son, along with other warriors, died in battle with invaders from distant lands. The enemies, moving further south, filled up the openings of three caves through which the daughters came to their brother on the surface. After learning about the death of her brother, the girls poured out a sea of tears from great grief, and their tears became the source of the rivers Reprua, Anykhamets and Bagerepsta, breaking through the blocked passages.
