Description and is it worth a visit

A large statue of Buddha in the monastery of Chon Khong Zen

Chon Khong Zen Monastery (Chon Khong Zen Monastery, Thien vien Chon Khong) is one of the most famous Buddhist complexes in Vung Tau, and, in our opinion, one of the most spectacular and worth visiting. It is located on a mountainside at an altitude of 80 meters above sea level, and is famous for a huge golden Buddha statue, which is perfectly visible from almost anywhere in the city center. From the monastery, and especially from the platform with the Buddha statue, there is a stunning view of the city – perhaps even the best panorama in the area! So if you are in Vung Tau, be sure to check here.

The construction of the temple began in 1966 and lasted almost 20 years. Today it is a major spiritual center that unites pilgrims and practitioners of meditative practices. A special feature of the complex is separate areas for meditation of monks and nuns.

The architecture of the monastery is designed in the traditional Vietnamese Buddhist style. The spacious well-groomed territory is decorated with shady trees and blooming flower beds, and cozy gazebos and benches are provided for relaxation. The most notable relic is a 28-meter gilded statue of a seated Buddha facing the sea and visible from afar.

In addition, the complex includes the ancestral tower, the main temple, the bell tower, meditation halls and houses for monks. In the main hall there is a statue of Buddha Shakyamuni with a lotus flower, and on both sides of him are statues of bodhisattvas. All this can be seen during a walk around the complex.

To visit the monastery, you should wear clothes covering your knees and shoulders, and behave quietly and politely, as this is a sacred place for Buddhists.

The monastery is located at 44 Vi Ba on the southern slope of Mount Tyong Ki, it is about 4 kilometers from the center (monastery on the map). It is quite far from the center, it is better to get there by taxi or rented transport, but in principle it is possible on foot.

A taxi ride in Vung Tau when ordering here via the Grab app will cost from 30,000 to 80,000 thousand (1.14-3.04 USD), mototaxi is twice as cheap. Everything in detail about Vung Tau transport and what you can use to get around the city here...
