Monument to the monk Thich Quang Duk

Monument to the monk Thich Quang Duc (The Venerable Thich Quang Duc Monument) in Ho Chi Minh City is an important symbol of the struggle for religious freedom and resistance to oppression by the government, a very revered place among local residents. The monument is erected in honor of a real event that took place at this place.

On June 11, 1963, a procession was organized by monks and ordinary Buddhists to protest against the actions of the head of state and the government directed against Buddhism and its followers. When they reached the intersection, the procession stopped, and three monks got out of the car accompanying them. One of them sat down on the asphalt, and the other, taking a canister out of the car, poured gasoline over the sitting monk. After that, the monk himself lit a match and flared up like a torch. His name was Thich Quang Duc, and he was 66 years old. Despite the fact that the tragedy shocked everyone present, it later became known that the act of self-immolation was planned in advance.

This tragic case has become widely known not only in the country, but also abroad. He became the impetus for a more active movement for the protection of the faith, which eventually led to the overthrow of the government regime and the revival of Buddhism.

The place, due to its drama, deserves attention, but probably only followers of Buddhism will be able to fully appreciate its significance. We recommend visiting the memorial on the way to other attractions.
