Jade Emperor Pagoda is also known as Ngoc Hoang Pagoda, Chua Ngoc Hoang, Chua Phuoc Hai, Temple Da Kao Turtle Pagoda. This is the most famous and one of the most important pagodas in Ho Chi Minh City, one might even say, a must-visit place for visitors to the city. In addition, it is not very far from the tourist center, and if desired, you can even walk to it.
This old Taoist pagoda was built in 1909 and has been preserved in its original form. During its history, it has been called differently: Chua Phuoc Hai, Chua Ngoc Hoang, Temple Da Kao.
It will not surprise with its scale, and frankly speaking, it generally looks very modest, sandwiched between buildings, and from the outside it can not even be noticed. But it is notable for the Chinese-style architecture and the pink color of the walls, the roof is decorated with bizarre figures of people, dragons and floral ornaments, it looks very unusual and beautiful.
Inside the temple will be much more than it may seem from the outside, filled with decorative elements, wood carvings. There are more than a hundred different deities stored there, but the most important is the statue of the Jade Emperor, which is located in the center of the main hall surrounded by its formidable defenders. If you wander through other halls, you can find altars with the gods of midwifery, study and even love. It is to them that believers come most often for love prayers, prayers for well-being and children.
Of interest is also an artificial pond in front of the entrance to the temple itself, in which water turtles live, and probably one of the names is related to this fact. It's fun to watch them. Here you can also see small lizards sitting on a Buddha statue. Nearby there is a rack with dozens of lighted candles to fulfill your wishes, you can also buy and light your own candle.
Useful information to visit
- When visiting the Pagoda, choose discreet and modest clothes. Take off your shoes and headgear before entering the temple.
- You can't take pictures inside. Pagoda caretakers carefully ensure that visitors do not take photos, even on the phone.

🚶 How to get there
The Jade Emperor Pagoda in Ho Chi Minh City is located 3 kilometers from Ben Tan Market and the tourist area at 73 Mai Thi Luu St (pagoda on the map), on foot it is about 40 minutes along a not very convenient route in places without sidewalks. Therefore, it is better to go here by taxi or bus. If you do not understand the local routes, then you can use Google maps to find the bus number.
