Hoi An is a city that is not just seen, but experienced. But how to manage this experience if you only have a day, a weekend, or a short vacation? We've returned here many times and based on our experience have created three ready-made itineraries. These are not just lists of attractions, but step-by-step instructions with logistics, timing, and our personal hacks. Take the one that fits your vacation and head out to meet Vietnam's most atmospheric city.
Important foundation for any itinerary: To visit museums and historical houses in the Old Town you need the Hoi An unified ticket (120,000 dong). It allows you to visit 5 objects out of 25 of your choice, valid for 3 days. You can buy several tickets and visit all 25, but it's not necessary. Our personal TOP-5 for visiting with it: Traditional Show, Hoi An Museum, Tan Ky House, Quan Cong Temple, Minh Huong Communal House.
1-Day Itinerary: Classics and Lantern Magic
- For whom: for those who came on vacation to Da Nang and dropped into Hoi An for a day
- Goal: to manage to see all the most "postcard" sights — the historic center, city symbols, and the magical evening with lanterns
- Transport: everything can be visited on foot
-
Day Plan: From Morning to Late Evening
The Japanese Bridge — a symbol to start (in the morning) and end (in the evening) your acquaintance with Hoi An. 9:00 – 13:00. Start and History
- Buy the unified ticket at the booth near the Japanese Bridge.
- Start with the Hoi An Museum of History and Culture — this will help understand the city's context.
- Walk along Lantern Street Nguyen Thi Minh Khai to the city's calling card.
-
13:00 – 14:30. Lunch at the Market. Go to the central market (Cho Hoi An) — inside there's a great food court with local food. You can also buy souvenirs and handicrafts there.
-
14:30 – 17:30. Cultural Immersion.
- Visit Tan Ky House and Quan Cong Temple with the unified ticket.
- Be sure to watch the Traditional Show (at 15:15 or 16:15). It's live music and dances in a historic house.
-
18:00 – 22:00. Evening Magic on the Water.
- Take a walk along the Bach Dang embankment.
- Take the mandatory 20-minute cruise on the Thu Bon River. The view of the city's lanterns lighting up from the water is the postcard Hoi An.
- Cross the pedestrian An Hoi Bridge to the island of the same name. Here you'll find the colorful night market with hundreds of lanterns.
- End the day with a dinner with a view. Choose a restaurant on the second floor on An Hoi Island — from there you get the best panorama of the illuminated Old Town across the river. Or stay at the embankment in one of the family cafes.
2-Day Itinerary: Immersion in Atmosphere and Crafts
- For whom: for those who came for a weekend with an overnight stay
- Goal: first day — history, second day — hands-on, taste, and local life
- Transport: on foot + bicycle/motorbike.
-
Day 1: Heritage of the Old Town
Repeat the itinerary of the first day, but at a more relaxed pace. You'll have time to visit the Phuc Kien Assembly Hall, bargain for souvenirs at the market without rush, and choose a dinner spot without haste.
-
Day 2: Creativity, Villages, and a Show
Making a lantern with your own hands — the best souvenir from Hoi An. -
Morning: Choose a Workshop. This is the main "highlight" of the day. Sign up for one of the classes (better in the morning):
- Cooking class (Cooking class): they'll teach you to cook pho, spring rolls. 🍳
- Making a lantern, fan, or Vietnamese hat (nón lá): creativity and immersion in craft. 🏮
- Ceramic painting in Thanh Ha pottery village: can be combined with a trip there. 🎨
-
Daytime: Bicycle Ride to Cam Nam Village. Rent a bicycle (from 30,000 dong/day) and ride across the bridge from the market to Cam Nam village. This is a quiet, authentic area where craftsmen live. On the way, you can stop at An Bang beach.
-
Evening: Cultural Finale. Buy a ticket to one of the city's iconic shows:
- "Bamboo Show" at Lune Center: virtuoso acrobatics and live music. 🎬
- "Hoi An Memories" (Hoi An Memories): a grand open-air performance with 500 artists. 🎭
-
3-Day Itinerary: Hoi An and the Treasures of the Surroundings
- For whom: for those with a long weekend or a desire to see all the most significant things in the region
- Goal: 2 days for a leisurely exploration of Hoi An + 1 day for a grand excursion
- Transport: on foot + motorbike/car rental or tour, can use taxi apps
-
Days 1 and 2: Immersion in the Basics
Spend the first two days according to the plan of the 2-day itinerary. This is the ideal base: you'll have time to both feel the atmosphere and create your own souvenir, and watch a show.
-
Day 3: Big Trip of Your Choice
Plan an all-day outing. Here are the two strongest options, between which, in our opinion, it's really hard to choose.
View from the observation deck of the Marble Mountains. Be sure to take the elevator up. -
Option A: Marble Mountains and Da Nang (closer, more varied)
This is a complex of 5 sacred limestone mountains with cave-temples, offering views of Da Nang and the coast. Easily combined with sightseeing in modern Da Nang (Dragon Bridge, My Khe beach). Rent a motorbike (the most flexible option) or take a taxi/Grab. Visit the equipped Thuy Son mountain, take the elevator up, explore the Heaven and Hell caves. You can stop at the beach on the way. Detailed guide to Marble Mountains here.
-
Option B: My Son Ruins (further, historically more significant)
This is an ancient temple complex of the Champa Empire (IV-XIII centuries), a UNESCO site. An atmospheric place surrounded by jungle, the Vietnamese "Angkor Wat". The most convenient way to visit is to take a group or private tour (transfer + guide). If going on your own by motorbike/taxi — leave at opening (6:00) to avoid the heat. Don't miss the Cham dance show at 9:30 or 10:30. Read everything about visiting My Son here.
In theory, you can manage to visit both the ruins and the mountains in one day. There will be enough time for it, the main thing is that you have enough energy and emotions.

Final Tips for the Perfect Journey
- Ticket — on the first day: Buy the unified ticket right away (can be online on trip.com). Visits can be distributed: 3 objects on the first day, 2 on the second.
- Photo session in peace: To take pictures of empty streets and the Japanese Bridge without crowds, come to the Old Town at 7:30-8:30 in the morning.
- Bargaining — it's normal: At the market, when buying souvenirs, lanterns, feel free to divide the price by 2-3 and bargain, but only with a smile and not aggressively. Aggressive bargaining as in Arab countries is not liked here
- Weather in plans: In the rainy season (October-December) rains are heavy but short. Have a raincoat with you and plan museums and workshops for the time of possible downpours.
