Hotels in Trincomalee
In Trincomalee, on the neighboring beaches of Nilaveli and Upuveli, there are quite a lot of accommodation options of different categories, ranging from single hostels to five-star hotels with their own territory. There are also private guest houses where rooms are rented.
Many facilities offer an included simple breakfast in the form of scrambled eggs or pancakes to choose from with tea or coffee. If you will stay in the areas of Nilaveli or Upuveli, it is best to choose accommodation with breakfast, because it is not always possible to find where to eat in these areas inexpensively.
It is also very important for a comfortable stay that the room has air conditioning, because it is simply impossible to sleep in such heat. The cheapest accommodation options offer a fan and a mosquito net, but this almost does not save from the heat.
The order of prices is approximately as follows:
- Accommodation in the hostel - from 3000 rupees (approximately 9.06 USD, see currency of Sri Lanka)
- Budget room for two with a fan - from 5000 rupees (approximately 15.11 USD)
- Budget room for two with air conditioning - from 7000 rupees (approximately 21.15 USD)
- A good hotel room with air conditioning, swimming pool - from 10000 rupees (approximately 30.22 USD)
Payment in guest houses and hostels is only in cash in local currency, only a few expensive hotels accept cards. Some accommodation options are ready to accept dollars, but the exchange rate will not be profitable.

Areas of Trincomalee where to stay
Trincomalee has three tourist areas and beaches where tourists can stay: the town itself, Uppuveli Beach, Nilaveli Beach. It is very important to choose the right location of the hotel, as with an unsuccessful choice you can find yourself on a dirty fishing beach or too far from the shore. Here is a brief description of the districts:
-
City Of Trincomalee
This is the most developed part of the entire Trincomalee resort, but it is not suitable for recreation at all (Center on the map). There is a bus and railway station, shops and markets, banks. But to stop here for a long time is not worth it. Of course, you can spend one or two days hiking to the city attractions, but for a beach holiday you still have to go to the beaches of Upuveli or Nilaveli. In the center of Trincomalee, too, there are several beaches, but they do not pull on places for a tourist holiday, and usually more unassuming locals rest on them.
But if you still decide to stay in the center of Trincomalee, it is best to choose a hotel within walking distance from beach in the Dutch Bay, and ideally in one of the hotels on the first line.

Trincomalee City Centre -
Uppuveli beach and district
This beach and tourist area is 6 kilometers from the city center ((On the map). In our opinion (the authors of the site), this is the best place to stay in Trincomalee, because there are many hotels and guest houses, there are hostels, tourist cafes and restaurants, motorcycle rental, currency exchange. Along the area runs the main road Nilaveli road, where you can find shops and inexpensive cafes for locals. The only thing that is still missing in the Uppuveli area is the local alcohol store. The fact is that alcohol in Sri Lanka is sold only in special stores (see for more information about alcohol in Sri Lanka and where to buy it), and the nearest one is far from the city center. You will have to go to it by tuk-tuk or rented transport.
Upuveli beach itself begins almost immediately from Trincomalee and stretches for many kilometers. But in fact, the tourist area of Uppuveli is very compact, and is located 6 kilometers from the city. It is formed by Sarvodaya road and its neighbors. And the rest of the beach between Trincomalee and the tourist area is not a tourist, but a Muslim fishing village with a very dirty beach, boats on the shore, and sometimes not very friendly people. remember! Choose a hotel in Upuveli it is necessary in the tourist area near the street Sarvodaya road, otherwise just spoil your vacation. Here is the area on the map- (Uppuveli district on the map).
The beach in the tourist area of Upuveli is not as beautiful and clean as in Nilaveli, but it is more developed. There are more cafes and restaurants, there are beach entertainment, a lot of young people, and in the evenings there are beach parties. Learn more about the entire upuveli beach here...
You can get to Upuveli from the center of Trincomalee, from the bus station or railway station by tuk-tuk for 400 rupees. Also at the bus station you can take a bus to Pulmodai, it runs along the main highway along Upuveli and there you can get off and walk to the hotel or beach on foot. Buses run from 04:30 to 19:30 with a frequency of 30-60 minutes, cost from 44 rupees.
Uppuveli Beach -
Nilaveli beach and district
This area is much further from the city, 15 kilometers (Nilaveli on the map). In fact, it is already an independent Village, and not a continuation of Trincomalee. It is not as compact as Upuveli, hotels here are located from each other at a greater distance between the Houses of local residents, and also stretched along the beach for many kilometers. The situation here is very quiet, rustic, there are few tourists. The infrastructure is poorly developed, there are few shops, cafes and restaurants. You can find motorbikes for rent.
The beach in Nilaveli is cleaner and more beautiful than in Upuveli and very deserted. Only in the holiday season (New Year in January, Sri Lankan New Year in April) a lot of local tourists come here. There is no entertainment and infrastructure on the beach, there are only a few cafes and diving centers. In general, you can recommend this area if the most important thing for you is a beach holiday, and everything else is not so important.
You can get to Nilaveli from the center of Trincomalee, bus station or railway station, from Upuveli beach by tuk-tuk from 2200 rupees. Also at the bus station you can take a bus to Pulmodai, it passes along the main highway through the city and Upuveli and goes to Nilaveli, but does not stop in the village itself. Go from 04:30 to 19:30 with a frequency of 30-60 minutes. It costs 50 rupees to get to Nilaveli.
