Dutch Fort Negombo (Dutch Fort): An Honest Review & Practical Visit Guide

Description and is it worth a visit

Dutch Fort Negombo

Dutch Fort in Negombo (Dutch Fort) – today it is rather not a full-fledged fortress, but a historical fragment embedded in the life of a coastal city. If you expect to see a large-scale and well-preserved monument, such as in Halle or Jaffna, then there is nothing like that here. What you see today is just a gate, part of the fortress wall and one tower standing in its historical place. Its value is not in its monumentality and views, but in the feeling of layering of epochs, which you can feel only with the guide's story or with a developed imagination. This is actually the only historical landmark of Negombo, which can be seen on advertising booklets and postcards, and all tourists are certainly brought here with sightseeing tours or during trips to the sights of the city by tuk-tuks with guide drivers.

Built in 1672, the fort was an important defensive structure, but in the XIX century it was almost completely dismantled to build a prison. The most interesting thing is that right behind these old gates are the gates of the prison itself, which creates a unique and slightly surreal contrast. Prisoners take care of the remains of the fort, which adds a special atmosphere and symbolism to the place. If you stay here a little longer, you can even see how a "Paddy wagon" in the form of a bus with prisoners enters the prison through the gate, and how they are escorted through the courtyard into the building. I personally had a chance to observe such a picture once.

Otherwise, to be honest, the Dutch Fort Negombo is a place to visit for a couple of minutes. You can take a few photos, climb up to the preserved tower and take a look at the prison yard, and that's it. In our opinion, it's not worth going here specifically just for the sake of the fort, but if you find yourself in Negombo, for example, at the famous fish market, which is located just a stone's throw away, then it's definitely worth coming here.
