The flight from Moscow takes 9-15 hours depending on the connection time. One of the most popular and inexpensive airlines is AirArabia. How to get to Negombo from the airport
-
By taxi or tuk-tuk
You can use car taxis or tuk-tuks. Tuk-tuks are 30% or even almost half cheaper than a car. Travel time 20-30 minutes. Here are real prices through apps:
- By tuk-tuk – from 800 rupees / 2.39 USD.
- By car – from 1200 rupees / 3.59 USD.
Taxis can be ordered at the counter, negotiated with drivers in the parking lot or at the exit from the terminal. Tuk-tuks do not enter the airport parking lot, they have a separate area nearby.
It is more convenient and cheaper to order through Uber (international) or the local PickMe app. However, if you need to get from Negombo to the airport or back at night, there may be a problem with ordering through apps: there simply won't be any available cars. Therefore, it is better to order a night trip from Negombo in advance on the street or at the hotel.
You can install the apps at home and register with a Russian SIM card. To order, you can use airport Wi-Fi or buy a SIM card in the arrivals hall. SIM card prices at the airport are normal, you can buy without markup.
To better plan your trip, read our detailed guides:
It is even more convenient to order a ready-made tourist transfer in advance through the Kiwitaxi search form below. This is more expensive, but more comfortable. You won't have problems with the language barrier, the driver will meet you with a sign at the airport and take you to the right place:

By bus
Local bus to Negombo Local bus number 240 departs to Negombo not directly from the airport, but from the Aweriwatta bus station, also known as Katunayake, which is located about a kilometer from the terminal exit (see Aweriwatta station on the map). You can get there by tuk-tuk for 200-400 rupees or on foot.
At Aweriwatta station, just ask the first person you meet or a bus driver "Negombo?", and they will point you to the bus. Buses run very frequently, but only during daylight hours.
In Negombo, the bus arrives at the main bus station of the city (bus station on the map), from where you can take a tuk-tuk to the tourist area for 300-400 rupees.
From Colombo
Bus number 240 runs from the main bus station in Colombo (Pettah area) to Negombo, fare from 100 rupees, travel time 1.5-2 hours. Departs at least every 30 minutes. A faster large express bus costs 195 rupees, but it goes much faster on the highway than the regular one.
It is also convenient to get from Colombo by train. About 5 trains depart daily from Colombo Fort station to here, costing about 50 rupees, travel time 1-1.5 hours. These are not long-distance trains, but something like our commuter trains. Sometimes they are very crowded, so you have to stand. Tickets from Colombo are purchased at the station at window No. 10 one hour before departure, they are not sold in advance.
You can find train schedules and prices on the websites: https://eservices.railway.gov.lk, http://colombofort.com (look for Puttalam Line).
In Negombo, trains arrive at several railway stations, so you can choose where to get off. There is the main Negombo railway station (on the map), Kattuwa (on the map) and Kochchikade (on the map). The closest to the tourist area is Kattuwa station, from where you can walk to most hotels. From the main Negombo Railway station, you can take a tuk-tuk to the tourist area for 300 rupees, or walk to hotels in the center.
From other cities
You can get to Negombo by bus from many other cities in Sri Lanka. There are routes to/from Kandy, Anuradhapura, Trincomalee, Polonnaruwa, to the north to Kalpitiya; to Kurunegala, from where you can take a bus to all cities in central Sri Lanka and to the north. It is better to go to the southern cities and beaches of the country with a transfer via Colombo.
You can get to Negombo by bus from almost anywhere in the country during daylight hours, even if the route involves transfers. To do this, you just need to come to the local bus station early in the morning and ask the drivers or "helpers" who call passengers to the buses, and they will tell you which route to take and where to make transfers. We have described everything in detail in our guide: All about buses in Sri Lanka and how to use them.
Transport in Negombo and how to get around
The city is small and if you are not in a hurry, you can get around it quite well on foot. But walk on the main roads with caution! There are few sidewalks here, and where they exist, they are often occupied by parking or trade, so you have to walk on the roadway one way or another.
Outside the tourist area (Lewis Place street), city buses run on the main roads, but it makes no sense to use them to get around the city, they are simply useless.
The most convenient way to get around Negombo and the nearest surroundings is by taxi or tuk-tuks. The latter are preferable because they are cheaper and easier to find, and with cars everything is more complicated. A tuk-tuk ride from the tourist area to the city center, bus station or railway station will cost from 300 rupees.
Using tuk-tuks is very simple:
- Catch on the street: There are dozens of them everywhere. Always agree on the price before the ride and bargain. Clarify: "This price for all passengers and for the ride, right?"
- Order through an app: Uber and PickMe have the option to order a tuk-tuk. This is the best way as the price is fixed.
- Rent for a day: The real cost of renting a tuk-tuk for a whole day is from 5000 rupees (14.96 USD), but this also depends on the route, it can be more expensive. Offers for 1500-2000 rupees are a trap, they will take you to shops for commission, not to attractions.
Car or motorcycle rental
There are many motorcycle and tuk-tuk rentals in Negombo, and there are car rentals. You can find them on the main Lewis Place street. There are also rentals that work online.
- Rental of a 110cc motorbike (suitable for trips around the city) – from 2500 rupees per day.
- Rental of an Indian-made TVS 125cc motorcycle (suitable for trips around the surroundings or traveling around Sri Lanka) – from 3000 rupees per day.
- Tuk-tuk rental (suitable for trips around the surroundings or traveling around Sri Lanka) – from 4000 rupees per day.
Generally, Negombo is a very convenient point for traveling around Sri Lanka by rented transport, and then returning here to fly home.
To rent a motorbike in Sri Lanka, category "A" in local license or IDP is mandatory. The full list of requirements, as well as tips for choosing transport and rental, we have collected in the article Motorcycle rental in Sri Lanka: everything you need to know.
As for cars, on site they mainly offer rental with a guide-driver for trips to attractions. If you need a car at your own disposal, you can book online from one of the global car rental companies, and get the car upon arrival at the airport or in Negombo:
