Description and is it worth visiting

Fort Hammenhiel in Jaffna

Fort Hammenhiel in northern Sri Lanka is a small historical fort located on its own stone island not far from Jaffna. This place may be interesting for those who want to see a well-preserved example of colonial fortification without crowds of tourists. Locals recommended we visit it, comparing it to a "local Singapore," but we found this comparison greatly exaggerated — it's a quiet and small fort, not a grand attraction, and there are no special beauties or infrastructure here.

The fort was built by the Dutch in the 17th century to control the sea approaches to Jaffna and protect against Portuguese and British claims. Initially, it was used as a defensive fortification, and at different periods of its history, it served as both a military garrison and even a prison, as evidenced by the rooms on the first floor inside the courtyard. Now the fort is in excellent condition, and its maintenance is more like an open-air museum where you can freely explore all corners.

You can only get to the island by boat, which is organized by the Fort Hammenhiel hotel, which manages this attraction. You need to come directly to the hotel, go to the reception and buy tickets for the transfer. The boats do not run on a strict schedule, but on request. Tickets for the boat are paid in full, regardless of how many people you are. So if you are traveling alone or as a couple, you can try to wait and find fellow travelers at the pier. Traveling alone is quite expensive, and given that this place is not very promoted, you may have to wait a long time for fellow travelers.

The fort itself is small; we leisurely explored all its nooks and crannies in 10 minutes. Organized tours are not conducted here, but there are some information signs in English placed here and there, which briefly tell the history of the place. Be sure to go up to the top — there is a special observation deck equipped there, offering decent views of the surrounding sea. In our opinion, the fort is interesting for its authenticity and atmosphere, but it's probably not worth planning a separate long trip just for it. This place is more suitable if you have already seen everything in Jaffna and the surrounding area, and still have extra time and money. But we still cannot unequivocally and definitely recommend visiting it, despite its good condition and historical significance.

🚶 How to get there

Fort Hammenhiel is located in northern Sri Lanka, 25 kilometers from the center of Jaffna (Fort Hammenhiel on the map). Despite the short distance from the center, it takes almost an hour by taxi, tuk-tuk, or rented transport. You need to go to the Fort Hammenhiel hotel using a navigator. The last few hundred meters to the hotel are on a dirt road, there are signs. Parking is free. You can also get there by bus route No. 782 from the central bus station in Jaffna, but it runs infrequently and plus you will have to walk 2 kilometers from the bus stop to the hotel.

There is also bus No. 88, which goes to the pier on the other side of the strait on Velanai Island. Small ferries frequently run through this strait, on which you can cross from island to island without having to travel dozens of kilometers over bridges. So you can come here to Fort Hammenhiel, then cross by ferry and see Fort Cates Island, and then go further. You can do such a route by bus 782 and 88, and by motorbike or bicycle. We paid 150 rupees for the crossing of a motorbike and two people.

For more details about transport, how to get to Jaffna and what to travel on, we have told in the detailed instructions here.

When you arrive at the Hammenhiel hotel, go straight to the reception. Tickets for the entire round-trip boat are purchased there regardless of the number of people, so it makes sense to gather a group or wait for fellow travelers here, but that depends on your luck. After purchasing tickets, simply follow from the reception to the pier. There you will be put on a boat and taken to the island, and back after the tour. The time spent on the island is not limited, but there's not much to do there for a long time.
