Description and is it worth a visit

The bottomless well of Nilavarai near Jaffna

Bottomless well Nilavarai (Nilavarai Natural underground water well or Bottomless Well) is a natural underground spring with crystal clear water located a few kilometers south of Jaffna. This place is a deep sinkhole filled with water of an incredibly transparent turquoise hue, where locals and tourists come to swim. The main feature of this place is the visual effect created by the water: because of its purity and depth, the bottom seems almost invisible, which gave rise to the name "bottomless". Although in fact there is a bottom here, of course, and according to various estimates its depth is 20-25 meters.

There is a descent to the water in the form of a ladder, and a concrete platform with a ladder has been built for those who want to swim. But there are not very many people who want to swim here, more often they come here just to look at this natural wonder, and go further along the route. The fact is that the water here is cool, even too much. But if you still decide, you can even take a scuba diving mask with you, because watching the play of light in the thickness of the purest water and the fish that swim in the depths is a separate pleasure.

Several local legends are associated with this place, one of which says that the well has no bottom and is connected by underground channels to the ocean. There is no scientific confirmation of this, but the myth itself adds to the mystery of the place. At the entrance to the well you will be greeted by a small market where you can buy souvenirs and try local goodies — light pastries and fast food. At the same time, the basic infrastructure is minimal: there is parking, but there are no showers or changing rooms, so it's better to come ready for bathing. This place is not a must-see, but if you want to see a unique natural phenomenon and swim in an unusual place, then Nilavarai is definitely worth it to turn off the main road and spend about half an hour here.

You can just look at it from above through the fence
And you can go down to the water
And to swim here with the fish
But usually they just come and look over the fence

🚶 How to get there

The bottomless well is located 14 kilometers from the center of Jaffna on the way to the northern point of Point Pedro (Nilavarai Bottomless well on the map). Theoretically, you can get here by buses that go towards Point Pedro, but they do not pass by the well itself, so you still have to walk or take a tuk-tuk, so we do not recommend considering this option. It is better to go here by rented transport or tuk-tuk. Tuk-tuk here can be booked for a trip as a taxi through the application, or hired for a full day for a trip around the neighborhood from 5000 rupees. For more information about transport, how to get to Jaffna and how to get around, see detailed instructions here.
