Description and is it worth a visit
Archaeological Museum in Jaffna (Jaffna Archaeological Museum). This is the only museum in the city and the main museum of the entire north of Sri Lanka, and it is unexpectedly large and saturated for such a low–tourist destination. It contains artifacts discovered during archaeological excavations in the northern region of Sri Lanka: collections of coins, tools, weapons, architectural elements and even animal bones. The exposition is divided into two parts – the collection inside the building and the open-air exhibits in the courtyard.
In our opinion, the main disadvantage of the museum is the almost complete absence of explanatory plates on the exhibits, there are only names of objects. You will have to guess the origin and purpose of many items yourself, or ask the curator of the museum to tell you about the exhibits.
The museum is located near the central part of the city, and it can be easily reached on foot as part of a general walk around Jaffna, combining sightseeing with visiting other attractions such as the fort or the library. Given the lack of explanations, we would recommend reading a little about the history of the region in advance so that the visit would be more meaningful, or just tune in to a leisurely study of artifacts without waiting for a deep dive from the exposition itself. This place is definitely worth a visit if you want to get a better idea of the rich past of this corner of Sri Lanka.
