About the Museum and Collection
Galeria Perdana is a gift museum located on the eastern tip of Langkawi Island. It houses a collection of gifts presented to the fourth Prime Minister of Malaysia, Mahathir Mohamad (Tun Dr. Mahathir bin Mohamad), and his wife over a political career spanning more than forty years. Mahathir Mohamad is a key figure in the history of modern Malaysia; it was under his leadership that the country made its rapid economic leap.
The museum opened in 1995 and is housed in three interconnected two-story buildings constructed specifically for this purpose. An interesting detail: artists from Uzbekistan contributed to the interior decoration, giving the halls a special flair.
What to See
The museum's collection includes over 2,500 exhibits. These are gifts from heads of state, political figures, businessmen, and public organizations from all over the world. Here you can see:
- Decorative and applied arts: vases, boxes, dishes, textiles.
- Traditional costumes and fabrics from different countries.
- Weapons — from ceremonial daggers to hunting rifles.
- Musical instruments.
- Paintings and sculptures.
- Jewelry and ornaments.
Gifts from Russia and former Soviet republics are of particular interest. The plaques next to the exhibits indicate who presented the gift and when, so you can try to guess the "homemade" items and then check your guess. You'll find examples of Russian pottery, jewelry, and folk crafts.
The exhibition is organized into thematic halls, each dedicated to a specific type of gift or region. Walking from hall to hall, you can trace what kinds of items leaders from different countries presented to Malaysia — from traditional crafts to modern works of art.
Is It Worth Visiting
Galeria Perdana is one of the most unusual museums on Langkawi. Unlike natural attractions, it offers immersion into Malaysia's political history and international relations through the lens of gifts. The collection is truly impressive in scale and diversity: it includes both curious items and genuine works of art.
The museum will be interesting for:
- Those interested in the history and culture of different countries.
- Travelers who want to see something unusual beyond beaches and mangrove forests.
- Families with school-aged children — the exhibits vividly show what kinds of gifts are presented to heads of state.
A visit will take about 1–1.5 hours. If you're heading to the eastern part of the island to see the Ayer Hangat hot springs, Durian Waterfall, or a mini-zoo, the gallery fits perfectly into your route — it's literally a five-minute drive from these places.
🕐 Opening Hours
Daily from 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM, on weekends and public holidays from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM.
Important! As of the beginning of 2026, the museum is closed for renovation. Information on reopening dates has not yet been published. Before your trip, we recommend checking the current status online or with local tourist information centers.
