Most often Gorodets is visited in the form of a one-day tourist excursion from Nizhny Novgorod or with a short stop on a cruise ship along the Volga. Such a trip will allow you to get acquainted with the main tourist attractions of Gorodets, and this is generally enough. If you want to explore in detail all the museums and sights of the city, attend master classes, sunbathe a little and swim on the Volga beaches, you will need at least two full days.
Ready-made excursions to Gorodets on buses and motor ships are sold in travel agencies on the streets of Nizhny Novgorod, or you can buy them online on these sites:

The main attractions of Gorodets are museums. There is a whole museum complex of State Historical and thematic museums "Museum quarter", the site museumquartal. RF. All museums operate on a single schedule with a day off on Monday, entrance to each of them is paid separately, there are no single tickets. They are located compactly within the historical territory, which is called the "museum quarter", you can visit them all on foot.
Keep in mind that all Gorodets museums are closed on Mondays. Therefore, it is better to avoid visiting these days, since there is simply nothing to do here.
At first glance, it may seem that in all the diversity of Gorodets museums it is easy to get confused and it is difficult to decide what to visit first. If you first came to Gorodets, we offer you the following route for self-acquaintance with its sights:

The museum has three halls: "Russian folk toy", "the toy of my childhood", "Zemstvo School of Gorodets Village, Balakhninsky district". Of particular interest for adults is usually the section "Toy of my childhood", which presents toys of the Soviet period, ranging from simple rubber dolls to electronic games. In a separate hall, the Class of the Zemsky school is recreated, and in it you can sit at a desk and try yourself as a student. Feodorovsky monastery
There are 8 active temples in Gorodets, and all of them are worthy of attention. But in our opinion, the most interesting both in architecture and history is the Feodorovsky monastery. It is believed that it was built in the 12th century at the same time as the foundation of the city, but then was burned. In Soviet times, it was again destroyed and rebuilt in 2009. In 1263, Prince Alexander Nevsky died within the walls of the monastery. Nearby is the beautiful Church of the intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos with blue domes, the eternal flame and the IS-3 tank.

Gorodetsky Val
Gorodetsky protective earthen rampart is a monument of ancient Russian fortification art of the 12th century. At that time, this earthen structure protected the city fortress from attack, the structure was large-scale, one of the largest in Russia. It is believed that its length was 2100 meters, the height of the shaft 15 meters. In addition, a moat up to 8 meters deep passed along the fortification.
Today, little remains of its former greatness. You can climb a barely noticeable earthen embankment and walk along the top. And if it were not for the tourist signs indicating the destination of the place, it could well be mistaken for just a natural hill. Therefore, an independent visit to this place may disappoint you, but with the guide's story, the tour can be quite interesting.

🚶 How to get there: Gorodetsky Val used to be located on the outskirts of the city, but today stretches right through the residential quarters of Gorodets. From the historical center (museum quarter) it is easily accessible on foot (Gorodetsky Val on the map)
Holy spring Nikola-the key
According to legend, in this very place was the appearance of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker. The peculiarity of the source is that spring waters flow here crosswise. A log Chapel of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker was built on the source to replace the old chapel that burned down in 2007. Here you can swim in holy water or take it with you. The key does not freeze in winter.
