What to Expect and Is It Worth Visiting

Gorodets Museum of Local Lore is the oldest museum in the city, it has been operating since 1918. This is definitely the place to start exploring the city, especially if you come here for a few days and without a guided tour.

The museum is located in an old building, a 19th-century mansion. The collection consists of approximately 15,000 exhibits! These are books, icons, interior and household items. The exposition covers the period from the Middle Ages to the present day, divided into sections:

• "The auction is noisy under the mountain ..." - about the famous Gorodetsky bazaar at the turn of the XIX -XX centuries.
• "Old Believers" - about the period from the end of the XVIII century, when the village of Gorodets acquired the role of a prominent center of "ancient piety".
• "Orthodoxy" - about the monuments of Orthodoxy of Gorodets.
• "Modern art crafts" - about Gorodetsky art crafts: paintings, toys, gingerbread.
• "Crafts of the XIX - early XX century" is dedicated to the artistic crafts that appeared in the XIX - early XX century.
• "A. P. Oblaeva's bedroom" is a recreated interior of the merchant's room of the mistress of the estate.
• "Merchants - the Oblaevs' living room" is a recreated living room of the Oblaevs' family.

There is also a separate hall with exhibits from the USSR period, among which older visitors will recognize household items and toys from Soviet childhood that are so close to their hearts.

We advise when visiting, if possible, to take an excursion escort, which is offered when buying tickets at the ticket office, the duration of the excursion is 50 minutes. Even if you inspect it yourself, we advise you to allocate at least an hour for its inspection. For independent visitors, there is a stand with text information about the exhibition in each hall, but not all of the individual exhibits are signed.
