What to Expect and Is It Worth Visiting

Gorodets Museum Quarter - this is the historical center of the city and its main attraction, a zone of historical development. This is a pedestrian zone and an open-air museum, including architectural monuments, as well as unique historical buildings (old houses and huts) that form the historical appearance of the city.

In the museum quarter you can just walk and look at the architecture, visit one of the seven thematic museums: Local History, children's Museum, Countess Panina's House, Gorodetsky gingerbread Museum, Russian samovar Museum, Dobra Gallery, Gorodets on the Volga. Museums are visited for a fee. It is best to visit accompanied by a guide, an official tour can be ordered at the Museum of local lore.

Here is a brief description of each of the museums:

Local History Museum. The oldest museum in the city, has been operating since 1918. The first museum worth visiting in Gorodets. The collection includes books, icons, interior and household items. The exposition covers the period from the Middle Ages to the present day.
Gorodets on the Volga. The continuation of the exhibition of the Museum of local lore, tells about some interesting moments and events in the history of the city, is located in several halls on two floors.
House Museum of Countess Panina. Located in a building that is a monument of architecture and urban planning of the early XIX century. The collection includes an exhibition of paintings in the style of Tibetan painting, an exhibition of watches, dresses, irons, music boxes and many other things.
Gingerbread Museum. A small thematic museum about one of the most famous Gorodetsky crafts – making gingerbread.
Children's Museum. It consists of three halls: "Russian folk toy" , "the toy of my childhood", "Zemstvo School of Gorodets Village, Balakhninsky district".
Museum of samovars. One of the largest collections of samovars in Russia and in the world.
Museum of good. Collection of household items of Russia of the late nineteenth-early twentieth century.
