The Massandra Palace or the Palace of Alexander III in Massandra is one of the three famous and majestic palaces of Yalta, which is simply unforgivable to miss. Special attention should be paid to the park complex surrounding the palace, which is one of the best in the Crimea, and which, by the way, you can walk for free. The construction of the palace began in 1881 by Prince S.M. Vorontsov, but after his death, a year later, it was suspended. By this time, only the walls and the roof had been erected. In 1889, this mansion was purchased especially for Emperor Alexander III, and its construction continued until 1902. The Russian architect M.E. Mesmacher was engaged in the completion.
The Massandra Palace first becomes the residence of Emperor Alexander III, and later of the last Russian Emperor Nicholas II, who will spend time here, but the house will not become residential for them. In fact, it has become a kind of summer residence of the emperor's family.
In the following years, the palace became the property of an ancient Russian wealthy clan - the Naryshkin family. During this period, a chic garden with fountains, paths, alleys, a variety of herbaceous and cultural plantings was arranged on the adjacent territory of 42 hectares. And in Soviet times, the palace housed a sanatorium for pulmonary patients, or Stalin's state dacha. The museum was opened here in 1992.
There are few exhibits inside the palace: household items, furniture, clothes. Much attention is paid during excursions to the interior and architecture of the building. The main exposition is located on 2 floors. Temporary exhibitions are held on the 3rd floor.
To see the Massandra Palace inside is possible only with an excursion, and an independent walk, unfortunately, is impossible. It should be noted that the tour takes place using an audio guide, not live communication. At the same time, not individual audio guides are issued, but one column for the whole group, and during the entire excursion it is with the guide, who actually just silently accompanies you along the route inside the castle. All this takes about 40 minutes. You can walk around the adjacent park for free and for as long as you want.
Tips for visiting the Massandra Palace:
- There is no organized parking near the palace. You can park by the side of the road before reaching 700 meters to the entrance, but there is not much space there and it is quite risky to leave vehicles unattended in such a place. During the high season, there may not be any free space at all, so it's better to look for safer places in advance at the entrance, and walk the rest of the way.
- There are a lot of visitors here in the summer, and therefore you need to be ready to stand in line at the checkout for 30-40 minutes.
- The ascent to the palace on foot is not steep, but it can be difficult for certain categories of people.
- The ticket price of the main exposition includes a tour guide, you can not walk around the palace on your own. Groups for excursions are formed near the ticket office after buying tickets, and it is impossible to book in advance for the time you need. In high season, be ready to stand in a long queue.
