What to Expect and Is It Worth Visiting

Ai-Petri Mountain, Yalta
Ai-Petri Peak

Ai-Petri Mountain is the most famous mountain in Crimea, and perhaps it can be called the most famous natural tourist attraction of the peninsula. The mountain is considered a landmark place of the Crimean Peninsula and in our opinion is definitely worth a visit.

Many pseudo-guidebooks indicate that Ai-Petri is the highest peak of the Crimea. However, this is not the case at all, and she is not even in the TOP 10. The height of Ai-Petri is 1234 meters, it rises above the city of Alupka and the village of Koreiz in Greater Yalta. From its top there are magnificent panoramic views of the surrounding area, and to attract tourists and their convenience, a cable car from the coast to the top with a length of 2980 m operates all year round. This cable car is considered one of the longest unsupported spans in Europe. The road starts from Mishor station (86 m above sea level), then Sosnovy Bor station (304 m) and the highest point is Ai-Petri station (1152 m).

A whole complex with tourist entertainment has been formed on the mountain: there is a cafe, an extreme rope bridge, a zipline, horseback riding and ATVs. There is a market for tourist goods with incredibly intrusive sellers who offer their goods at inflated prices. The bravest can climb even higher along the path to the highest point – the teeth of Ai-Petri (1234 m), but you will have to pay the Yalta Reserve fee of 150 rubles for admission there. And here you can visit three caves – Three-eyed, Geophysical and Yalta for 300 rubles adults and 200 rubles children for each. As of 2023, Trekhglazka and Geofizicheskaya were closed, but they can resume work, check this already on the spot. A trip to Ai-Petri can also be combined with a walk along the tourist route of another natural attraction – The Grand Canyon of Crimea, which is located 20 kilometers along the road from the summit.

Foggy days and precipitation, strong winds are frequent at the top. You need to be prepared for this, so it's better to get up in the morning. It is worth dressing warmer or taking warm clothes with you. Especially warm clothes will be needed if you decide to visit one of the caves.

There are several ways to climb the mountain: by cable car; by asphalt road in a private or rented car; by taxi; with a bus tour. To get the most complete impressions, we recommend going up by cable car, and going down by car, which can be done if you take advantage of the offers of local bomb drivers or taxis. It is worth noting that the road to Ai-Petri is a steep serpentine. Those who are seasick on the road need to keep this in mind. Well, physically well-trained tourists can climb Ai-Petri even on foot. Read more about how to get here below.

🕐 Working hours

Around the clock. It is best to visit in the morning, otherwise there is a chance to be in the afternoon fog at the top.

💵 Entrance fee / ticket price

Starting in 2023, the procedure for visiting Ai-Petri has become more complicated, there is an environmental fee for visiting the Yalta Nature Reserve, which occupies part of the mountain. But it all depends on the route and the method of visiting. Just come to the top of Ai-Petri, take a walk and admire the views from the observation deck for free. Actually, this is exactly what most tourists do, and they don't pay anything. But for climbing to the teeth of Ai-Petri or walking along hiking trails on the slopes, you now need to pay the reserve fee of 150 rubles, for residents of the Crimea and preferential categories it is free. Payment is made at the checkout on the spot at the top (for climbing to the teeth), and if you go to the trail along one of the routes, you can get a pass at the reserve office or on the website https://zapovedcrimea.ru/choose-pass. Registration of a free pass is also mandatory for residents of Crimea. For more information, including hiking trails, see the website.

🚶 How to get there

Ai-Petri is located near the village of Gaspra in Bolshaya Yalta, 27 kilometers from the center of Yalta (Ai-Petri on the map). Ways to visit the mountain at first glance seem complicated and confusing, but if you carefully read our instructions further, you can easily visit Ai-Petri yourself or decide to choose an easier way to travel with excursions. We tell you in detail:

With a guided tour

Excursions to Ai-Petri can be bought at most resorts of the Crimea, but usually these are, of course, excursions from the resorts of Yalta. This is a half-day or full-day bus ride, depending on the excursion program and departure point. There are also combined excursions with a cable car lift. You can buy them from distributors on the streets of resorts or online on these sites with reviews:

Usually, together with Ai-Petri, they visit other places along the way, including the Grand Canyon of the Crimea, the Yalta Zoo and other places. But when buying from distributors, carefully check the excursion program, and especially ask about the time spent upstairs. The fact is that some excursions take tourists most of the time to various tourist traps such as cafes and markets, and they bring them to the real sights for a few minutes.

On your own by bus

Many years ago, a suburban bus from Yatla bus station used to go to Ai-Petri almost to the very top, but now it doesn't go. So you should not count on this option.

On the cable car

The cable car to Ai-Petri starts in the village of Mishor, this is one of the resorts of Greater Yalta. Directly to the lower station of the cable car can be reached by buses #102 and #132 (see the routes on the map at the links), but these buses do not go from the city center, they will have to change at the Yalta bus station. You can also take buses No. 115, 122, 136 to the stop "Burevestnik Sanatorium", and from there walk to the cable car station a little more than a kilometer. But we do not recommend driving by private car to the lower station of the cable car, since there are very few parking spaces, and incomprehensible people without documents charge 350 rubles for "looking after" the car.

One-way cable car tickets cost 400 rubles for adults, 250 rubles for children. The lower station is open in summer from 10:00 to 16:00, the upper from 10:00 to 17:00. At the height of the tourist season, huge queues gather, sometimes you have to stand for almost an hour, and therefore it makes sense to come even before the start of work. Back from above, you can also go down by cable car and again have to stand in line for boarding. Or you can take advantage of the offers of local bombed drivers and go down by car at the same price but without a queue.

By car

By private or rented transport to Ai-Petri, you can climb the Yalta-Bakhchisarai road both from Yalta and from Bakhchisarai. Local bomb drivers and sellers of excursions tell "fairy tales" that the road here is very bad and you can only drive by SUV. But in fact, from the Yalta side, it is in good condition. From the side of Bakhchisarai, its condition is very bad, but even there you can drive any car in the summer. Whichever way you go, the road is very winding, mountain serpentine, so you need to drive very carefully, do not exceed the speed limit.

From Yalta, the road starts from the sanatorium "Uzbekistan". Along the way you will visit several interesting places. So, following further along the route, the road passes by Uchan-Su waterfall, Turtle Lake and Silver Gazebo. After the gazebo follows the village of Okhotye, where you can take a break and eat in a cafe, buy souvenirs, ride horses and ATVs, explore the surroundings from a height. Next is the Ai-Petri cable car station, which offers an even more fascinating view of the Black Sea, the city of Yalta and the surrounding villages.

From the side of Bakhchisarai, the road passes through the villages of Aroma and Sokolinoe, in which there is nothing special. But 20 kilometers to the top it is worth making a stop for a walk along the Grand Canyon of the Crimea, for which it is worth allocating an additional 2-3 hours.

When you reach the very top of Ai-Petri, the road will end at the entrance to the paid parking. For entry, they ask 150 rubles per car, but only from cars with numbers from other regions, and for local ones for free. If you do not want to pay, you can park the car on the side of the road, but during the peak tourist season you may have to look for a place at a distance of up to a kilometer from the entrance, because everything is busy.

To Ai-Petri on foot

If you like hiking, then climbing the mountain on foot will be a great idea. And an even better idea would be to combine a walking route and a cable car or taxi from local bombed drivers.

You will have to climb to a height of up to 1234 meters, so you need to lay a whole day on such a route, and it's better to start it early in the morning. No climbing skills and acclimatization will be needed here, but you need to understand that 1234 meters in height is a difficult test, and if you do not have experience of long hikes and good physical fitness, we would advise you to abandon this idea.

Theoretically, you can go up on foot by car, but this is not an interesting route at all. Several variants of hiking trails have been developed especially for hikers in the Yalta Nature Reserve, more details about which can be found on the reserve's website - https://zapovedcrimea.ru/yaltinskiy-routes. To pass along the route, you need to issue a pass on the website or in the office of the reserve: it costs 150 rubles, and is free for privileged categories and local residents.

💥 We remind you that it is much more interesting to get acquainted with the sights of Yalta with the help of excursions, and therefore we advise you to look at online booking options on these proven search and price comparison sites:
