What to Expect and Is It Worth Visiting
It is said that Mount Sokol or Kush-Kaya is the oldest coral reef in Europe. Anyway, this is one of the highest points in the Sudak and New World region, its height is 474 meters. There are many hiking and climbing routes of varying complexity to the top, and these routes are one of the most interesting activities during the holidays at these resorts for those who like one-day hiking trips.
During the hike to the Falcon you can visit the source of St. Anastasia, walk along the old stone bridge, see the rock "Devil's finger" and it is not clear where the ancient stone well appeared at the top. But the most important thing is that when you climb to the very top of the mountain, you will discover fascinating views of Novy Svet, Sudak and the Black Sea coast. There are probably no such views of these resorts from anywhere else.
You can climb the Falcon either simply on foot along the simplest route, or on a more complex one, using equipment. The walking route to the very top takes 3-4 hours, and the same amount of time will be needed for the descent, so a full day should be allocated for all visits to the mountain. You can go faster on a short route from the New World, then the ascent and descent will take 2-4 hours. You can climb on your own if you have experience of such routes. Be sure to use comfortable hiking or sports shoes, stock up on drinking water, and protect yourself from the sun in summer.
And now about the routes in more detail:
How to visit Sokol Mountain?
Sokol is located between Sudak and the New World, so you can climb it from any of these resorts. There are many trails along the slopes, but not all are safe and clearly distinguishable. The main and safest ones are marked with paint marks on trees and stones, there are no signs. Therefore, we highly recommend using a navigator or smartphone with downloaded maps. There are trails along the Falcon on Yandex maps and on Yandex Map Editor in the Guru maps, OSM, Maps.me and others like that. But Google maps are useless here. We advise you to download maps in advance before hiking, as the connection here works poorly.
So, you can go through Sokol from the New World to Sudak or back, and this is the best and most interesting route, during which you will see all the interesting places and viewing platforms. It will be much easier to climb from the New World to the top through the source of St. Anastasia. There are several entry points:
- From Sudak there are at least two well-trodden paths. Both start from the road connecting Sudak and Novy Svet. A gentle and simpler trail starts closer to Sudak, and we recommend it, here is its beginning on the map (the beginning of the trail on the map). Another option is more interesting and leads through the Devil's Finger rock, but the climb there is very steep and dangerous, not everyone can handle it. It starts further down the road (the beginning of the trail on the map). Then both of these trails converge into one and will lead you to the top, after which you can exit through Anastasia's spring and the stone bridge to Novy Svet, and return back to Sudak by city bus or taxi.
- From the New World there are also two starting points, and they are both suitable for climbing, just one slightly steeper (the beginning of the trail on the map and the beginning of the trail on the map). Then they also converge into one, and along it you will get first to the source of Anastasia, and then to the top. Here you can also go to Sudak, or go back to Novy Svet the same way. The last option will be much shorter.
