Aeolian Harp in Sudak, Crimea
The Aeolian Harp

The Aeolian Harp is an unusual natural attraction on the western slope of the Alchak–Kaya mountain near Sudak. It consists of a through rock with a hole formed as a result of weathering of the rock. Like other attractions of this type, the Sudak through rock got its name in honor of the ancient Greek god of winds Aeolus. The fact is that when there is a strong wind, the grotto begins to make sounds, or, as they say, to sing like a musical instrument harp.

But for vacationers, the Aeolian Harp in Sudak is interesting primarily not for its musical capabilities, but for its views of the entire resort and its city beach. You can climb up to the grotto, go through it, take beautiful photos with views and selfies. We will tell you how to visit it and how to get there below.

How the Aeolian Harp appeared in Sudak

Surprisingly, the Aeolian Harp, located at an altitude of about 30 meters above sea level, is of marine origin. As established by scientists, Mount Alchak Kaya was formed on the seabed from the remains of ancient marine animals and corals, which over millions of years fossilized, compressed and turned into limestone. Over time, as a result of geological processes, the seabed rose, forming a low mountain. The slopes exposed to winds and precipitation have been exposed to leaching and weathering for thousands of years, and as a result of the confluence of natural forces, this bizarre natural formation appeared in this place. By the way, the hole in the rock continues to erode today, gradually increasing, and after many centuries the arch will simply disappear.

🚶 How to get there: The Aeolian Harp is located on the outskirts of Sudak on the western slope of the Alchak-Kaya Mountain a little more than a kilometer from the center of the embankment and Cypress Alley (Aeolian Harp on the map). You can only get to it on foot, there are no roads at the foot of the mountain from this side. Move along the Sudak embankment along the beach to the left towards the Alchak-Kaya Mountain. When the embankment ends, you will have to go through a narrow passage between fences past the parking lot of small boats, and you will get to a wild beach at the foot of Alchak Kai. From here you can see the Aeolian Harp and climb up the slope to it.

The ascent to the Aeolian Harp is low, about 30 meters or about 9 floors. But the trail is very steep, you need good sports shoes here, and it will be difficult in slippers. Of course, many vacationers calmly climb in beach slippers, but still it's a little dangerous.

When you see the Aeolian Harp, you can continue to the top of the Alchak-Kaya Mountain along a steep unmarked path to the right of the grotto, or go down and walk along the official ecological path of the protected tract to the "Devil's Bridge". We tell you more about Alchak-Kai and how to visit it here.
